Wow. Why does everyone have to turn every tragic event on here into a political statement? Guns helped us to become a free country yet people use them to kill people every day. Clearly the person who did this was mentally ill. End of story.

People died in there. have some respect for them and leave the personal opinions to your self. At least long enough for the whole truth to come out.

I realize that in your infantile (and demented) little mind, anyone who owns a gun does nothing but set around all day naked holding a gun in one hand while they lube up and masterbate with the other (you know, kind of like you do with your Justin Bieber poster), but please quit projecting your own perversions on grown up, k?

Do you still sit behind the wheel of your moms car in the driveway, turning the wheel and making `vroom, vroom` sounds and imagine what it`s like to have a pair of testicles?

The only problems is, so far it seems, this guy did not use an assault rifle. There is a specific definition of `assault rifle`. A requirement of being defined as and assault rifle is that it includes a switch that permits it to fire like a semiautomatic rifle or as a fully automatic rifle.

Seeing as it`s been stated that he owned these legally, and automatic weapons or HIGHLY regulated, it`s doubtful he had one.

When knives can take out 50+ in a minute we can compare the two.

Really the only thing that needs to happen is doing something about assault rifles. There is NO reason for anyone not in the military to have one. Cops included. I love my guns and I love the right having them however, something does need to be done. You can`t stop crazy psycho`s all the time but making it harder to get weapons is a start.

"America really needs to wake up. The UK did after Dunblane, and that worked"

That is simply a lie. Gun crime has risen since Dunblane. the laws passed make no sense at all, especially considering the gunman should not have had a weapon even under the existing gun laws: makes regulation look stupid.

If you had a good case you would not be dishonest.

@TheBairn: Welcome to IAB!
UK Still Has Mass Killings even after Dunblane, eh?
Canada has similar laws about using firearms in crimes, for 20+ years now! Use agun in a crime = 1 year manditory jail time. You know how many times it`s been used? 3 (three). Every other time it`s "plea bargained" away.
LAWS don`t DO anything!
Police, courts and prisons DO SOMETHING about crime, ok?

@HiEv: I`m absolutely certain the gunman chose that movie on purpose. Why? idk, that`s for the trial to find out.

As for "insanity": I read a fine article claiming he`s NOT INSANE in the technical sense. He`s obviously not "normal" but, like the Joker, is removed from common morality for some reason.

Also, does anyone find it ironic that this happened at a *Batman* movie? He was inspired to become Batman because his parents were shot to death after going to the theater, and he fights crime *without* the use of guns.

FYI, the numbers are up to 12 dead and 58 injured now, most but not all of the injured people were shot. The semi-automatic rifle, shotgun, and two pistols James Holmes (the shooter) had were all purchased legally, along with over 6,000 rounds of ammunition. The man`s apartment is also apparently booby-trapped with explosives (they`re still attempting to enter safely).

If 40% of gun deaths are homicides, 3% are accidents, and 2% are justified shootings (based on 2005 CDCP statistics), what exactly makes pro-gun people think that more guns somehow means *less* homicides and accidental shooting deaths?? (The other 55% are suicides.)

Another study ("Investigating the Link Between Gun Possession and Gun Assault" (PDF), AJPH 2009) shows that people that possess firearms are 4.46 times more likely to be shot in an assault than people that don`t. This suggests that you`re *less* safe by being armed, not more.

I`m really having trouble understanding how people can use a shooting that kills and injures so many people to justify having *more* guns. More people shooting in a crowded theater sounds like a bad idea to me.

America really needs to wake up. The UK did after Dunblane, and that worked. If you have a gun it`s 5years in prison - no exceptions. Now we just need to do the same for knives, especially here in Scotland. I want these scum off of the streets. Sadly we`re relying on Kenny Macaskill(who I`m sure Americans know well) and he`s a pathetic, weak-minded embarassment. How that man is still in office is beyond me.

zazuch-" it would just turn into the wild west again, literally."

What? Where most was respectful and anyone who assaulted a woman could expect to be strung up?

I hate to tell it to you, but the Wild West was not how it`s portrayed in movies. Look at the numbers: In Abilene, Ellsworth, Wichita, Dodge City, and Caldwell, for the years from 1870 to 1885, there were only 45 total homicides. This equates to a rate of approximately 1 murder per 100,000 residents per year. (Which, btw, was a lot lower homicide rate than the East Coast)

Now, look at modern numbers: There is not a SINGLE state with numbers that low. The closest is New Hampshire with a number or 1.1 per 100,000. Washington D.C.`s is 30.8 and Compton, Calif. is 67.1.

There`s a better than even chance that less than 12 people would have been killed and less than 71 would have been injured. (and stop with the `gun-nut` crap. Just because a person chooses to exercise their right does not make them a `nut`.)

Many times the appearance of a legal gun will difuse the situation before it gets out of hand. For those when it doesn`t, you hear many more stories of how the shooter was stopped than how innocent bystanders were hit (actually, never heard of one of the latter).

Having everyone carry their handgun in public would do more bad then good in the grand scheme of things, it would just turn into the wild west again, literally.

The differnance between now and the wild wild west. Is there were multiple gangs of criminals shoot at each other. People who have concealed carry know who is bad and who is right. When the one gunman is dead they stop. They wont shoot each other AND on top of that none of us every said everyone. There are some people who are more of a danger to them self if they bought a gun then the person they are trying to defend themselves against.

That`s a terrible analogy. Firstly, as far as i know guns aren`t addictive. Secondly, there are a hell of a lot more deaths from legal drugs than there are from illegal drugs. Thirdly, sarcasm and calling me a dumbass? Don`t resort to that, it`s just petty.

There are no answers or solutions to situations like these. Crazy people will always be crazy and if they feel like going into a movie theater and shooting it up there isn`t much we can do about it except suffer the consequences. Having everyone carry their handgun in public would do more bad then good in the grand scheme of things, it would just turn into the wild west again, literally. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and there really isn`t a more absolute power then to take someones life from a moral standpoint. We created this evil and now we suffer the repercussions of it plain and simple. Not preaching for anti-gun legislation because anyone with half a brain knows it isn`t the answer and won`t stop things like this from happening again and again and again, just stating that my faith in humanity dwindles more everyday I guess.

How many times do you hear of mass shootings? (too many)

How often are the mass shooting taking place in locations where law abiding people can`t be armed? (that`s where the numbers killed is highest)

Outside of those `kill zones`, how many times do you hear of someone STOPPING further shooting by killing the shooter? (quite a bit)

Thats why you go through a mountain of paper work to get a concealed carry permit. They make sure your allowed and capable of using a weapon in any circumstance. Also yes its a movie theatre but last time i went it was still pretty damn bright in there and pretty sure the guy standing there shooting everyone would be the target not the masses of people running away from the guy holding a gun.

It`s amazing to me that gun rights advocates always go on offense after these incidents. To assert that these tragedies wouldn`t happen if everyone carried guns is absurd logic. It wouldn`t give these individuals any pause if they thought some people might have a concealed weapon, because their main goal is often to outwardly express their own sense of inner turmoil on others, and are often suicidal anyway. Sure, a theater patron might have put a stop to it sooner. Or, he could have made the situation more dangerous. We have police for a reason.

Personally, I despise guns but I know we`re not making them illegal anytime soon. If the argument is that there would be less crime if everyone carried, I could also make the opposite argument that there would be less crime if there were no guns at all. Both are unrealistic arguments. The problem is in the culture.

I`m sure it`s already been said but drugs are illegal and they`re pretty easy to get. Making something illegal doesn`t solve the problem. It takes a mountain of paperwork and a few months to get a concealed carry permit in NY state but if I wanted to I could make a few calls and probably have an illegal handgun in my possession by the end of the day.

Just look at Megan`s law, a horrific kidnapping case created horrific laws that waste money. Then of course the horror stories of awful work conditions from the Progressive era has left us with unconstitutional regulations which make it difficult to start a business.

In the UK we have a lot less death by guns, but its not about lunatics like this, I agree you can`t legislate against this flavour of nutjob, its because we`ve banned guns from public ownership. @8bithero--The right to bear arms is guaranteed in our constitution as a check against the power of government. In essence, the founding fathers decided that an armed populace is capable at the very least of forming a viable rebellion if our government becomes tyrannical. They knew this from experience, having just ended a war waged mainly by armed civilians.

For people who area against guns and think they dont solve anything. Look at most states when they pass a concealed carry law most states crime went down. Because criminals dont know who has a gun. That 80 year old lady your about to mug may have a gun and will shoot your ass if you try to rob her.

Other reason for guns is not just protection from other people(guns are great equalizer. A 90 year old frail lady can defend her self from a youthfull trained fighter for example) but even more so from our own country if need be. This sounds crazy yes but its honestly what our country was founded on.

Criminals will always get weapons. Even if you destroyed EVERY GUN in the world they would use brass knuckles and knives and bows and arrows. Once you ban and destroy those they will carry rocks and sling shots. When you ban those and destroy those they will use fists. See the problem?

For those who said they are for harm only. I get great pleasure from target shooti

Wow. it looks like the whole world need better mental help programs to keep sick poo like this from happening. Every time some psycho goes and shoots/blows up some public place all the dumb drats start arguing about gun control. More gun control could not have prevented this. The guy was obviously on a suicide mission, and had no regard for any laws. I think most nations in the world needs better programs to deal with things like this. They need to understand why crazy people feel that mass murder is the best thing for them to do. Maybe then they can understand these people and stop tragedies such as this from happening again, and stop the problem at the source. I also think that the media needs to be more responsible. Every time something like this happens the media plasters the killer`s name and picture all over the news, making murderers look like celebrities, which is exactly what the killers want.

Oh, just noticed you were from Europe, where Momma Guv`mint doesn`t trust her infants with guns.

Here`s the kind of control help you need:

Try staying on topic.
"Herpus McDerpus I will start talking about why you point is invalid because you pay taxes to the Queen. Har har". WUT!? Sounds to me like you can`t even make a point.

@whodat6484
Ooh OK congrats you a law abiding citizen like the rest of the world, so I guess that gives you the right to hold a weapon. Oooh dem yanks are teh smrat ones yes! It`s a weapon dude. It`s meant to harm people. I don`t understand AMUUURICAN logic y`see. What about other countries without guns?

You guys act like you need protection... from who!? That`s the thing, you guys want protection from other people. Acting like paranoid rats in a maze. You have no argument. It doesn`t matter how many shootings your country takes, you`ll still end up defending people having guns.
Such stupidity. Bind Mlowing!

LOL! I can never take the opinion of how to run a country seriously from a place that pays taxes to royalty and just recently gave the prince the highest military rank possible! Good qualifications to lead an army there! Tell me hows that draft for olympic security going? Do they get guns like the royal wedding or do plebeians not need that protection?

Stealing is illegal, so there are no thefts, right?
Pot is outlawed and no one smokes it.
Police are told not to beat people so they don`t.

Do you see where I`m going with this?
Want me to spell it out for you?

Not sure if gun control could stop this. Look at what happened here a year ago, Norway has the world strictest gun- laws. The guy joined a Shooting- club and took all the courses required to obtain a license for a gun.

Gun laws prevent a lot of crimes committed in affect though, because in the "heat of the moment" (argument, desperation, frustration etc.) it`s hard to reach for a weapon where there are none.

But the thorough, insane, massacre types who plan for a year, often alone - no law can stop them.

the point is the guy who did this grew up as a kid in a society that says its ok to carry a gun, and in a country full of thick mean persons, doesn`t take a genius to work out whats going to happen at some point

Yeah banning guns would work, because just like when we banned drugs, people stopped dieing from drugs. There has not been a single case of death from a banned drug in over 50 years! Get real, dumbass.

I`m with the anti-gun crowd on this one.
We should totally blame this on a firearm.
It`s not like there was a man behind it calling the shots. {no pun intended..... okay, yes it was}

Did my sarcasm come accrossed there? `Cause i was going for sarcastic

No @FredSpudMan: He means we should BAN DIESEL FUEL because it "could be" used to make bombs, get it?
While we`re at it, we can ban gasoline and propane too...

@patchouli: Are you completely BONKERS? Have you NOT read the stories of cops hauling dozens of illegal firearms from the homes of gangsters, criminals, bikers and other assorted nuts? DOZENS!
Any criminal with a few bucks can buy ANY number of guns In Canada ANY day of the week.
Your statement is just too silly for words.
The École Polytechnique Massacre shooter "only had one gun" and look what happened! It was LEGALLY owned to boot.

@THDot: It`s NOT that guy, your baseless slander is sickeing, there are 24+ guys in that area with the same name as the shooter.
Grow up already.

Any one who seriously thinks gun control or completely revoking the right to bear arms would solve this is a f*cking idiot! All that does is keep firearms out of the hands of people who obtain them LEGALLY!

I don`t know about other states, but I live in NY and have a concealed carry permit which allows me to LEGALLY purchase and carry a licensed handgun and ammunition. I can legally carry it anywhere except in NYC (which takes a special permit) or inside gov`t facilities. (City Hall, DMV, etc) It takes a few months and a mountain of paperwork to get a concealed carry permit, however, if I wanted to get a handgun ILLEGALLY, I could make a few phone calls and I`d probably have one at the end of the day. All "gun control" does is keep them from people who use them legally and would actually make it easier for people who want to use guns for criminal purposes.

Why do people care about this, but not about the 250 people killed in Chicago this year so far? (I believe more than Afghanistan).

And in terms of guns, the cause of the violence is not the mere existence of guns, it`s the culture (Switzerland comes to mind). People always seem to think it`s because of the "system" that a country fails or succeeds. Why do they always fail to take into account culture? There`s a reason why there is a giant gap between the success of Southern Europe and Northern Europe.

FredSpudman-"the United States has gone too far along the path of gun ownership"

What you call `too far along` is what we consider `a constitutionally recognized human right`. Our founding fathers found it so important that it is the SECOND of our Bill of Rights, right behind that whole `Free Speech` thing.

Guns are not a new thing. They helped found this country.

At what point will you look at the person and not the inanimate object for the answers?"Ah, so we should all take bombs everywhere in case someone has one? Sorry, I`m being a trifle facetious, but in all seriousness, I`m looking at the person. The person brought a gun to the cinema. That`s not right.

Zeegrr60-"you`re advocating everyone who can legally own a gun to own and take it anywhere they can"

I have no problem with this. It`s not `legal` guns that worry me.

MattPrince-"rather put my faith in kung fu bro."

That`s fine, and your choice. But kung fu doesn`t help too much against a .45, no matter what you see in the movies.

This guy had: Rifle, handgun, body armor, gas mask, smoke bombs and explosives.

Do you REALLY think any amount of gun laws would have stopped him? (If so, why not just outlaw murder? That`ll solve it.)

@patchouly

A criminal can get everything you just mentioned on the black market. People who no nothing about firearms shouldn`t be dictating laws for them. We seemed to overlook the shooting in Toronto about a week ago here for some reason.....

Yeah, McGovern, we can have everyone just hammering away at each other in a crowded theater. Sounds like a good solution.
Getting angry and imagining putting a bullet in this bastard is easy; having every angry person pack a gun is not the answer.

One point that is often overlooked, McGovern1981, is the access to guns limits the number of guns a person can have. In Canada, we can`t carry guns. There really aren`t any around. If a criminal is able to get a gun, which sometimes happens, he will only have that one gun and is limited to the amount of harm he can cause. In the U.S., guns are so readily available that, instead of one single gun with a few rounds, a person can bring a whole freaking arsenal including military weapons. The difference is we go from a few folks getting shot to huge numbers of folks getting shot.
