coming from a military household, every time I got in trouble, I got PTed, which was awful. and honestly, it just made me work harder to not get caught. I suppose public humiliation would work a little bit better. Who knows.

Keyh-"I did something that is borderline `acceptable` in today`s society."

It does not matter if it is `borderline acceptable` or even if it`s legal. It matters what the rules of the household are.

You live in a house, you follow the rules. It`s good practice for real life.

well, you could put hoodies on them, and have them walk through neighborhoods at night with neighborhood watch guys, and wait till they get shot so you can jump on the "they smoke weed so they must be bad kids anyway" bandwagon.

In my standards this is child abuse. You can say that the rules of the house are highly important, but first you must confirm that the rules of the house are reasonable.

This only causes unnecessary anger between the children and the parents, and humiliates the kids. If those kids aren`t emotionally stable, or at least not fully, this can affect them for the rest of their lives.

    Child Abuse?

Oh good lord! Punching a child in the face with a closed fist is abuse. Spanking them with the buckle side of the belt is abuse.

    This, is creative punishment.

NNoamfer-"In my standards this is child abuse."

Then don`t do it to your child. But your standards mean exactly dick in this kid`s life.

NNoamfer-" you must confirm that the rules of the house are reasonable"

No you don`t. It has nothing to do with you. Any parent can set any standards they want.

NNoamfer-"causes unnecessary anger between the children and the parents"

Parents are not required to be `buds` with their children.

    NNoamfer-" humiliates the kids"

Which harms the kids in no way. If you do something stupid, you deserve to be humiliated. It`s called `Real Life`.

kangoala-"Especially if your aspirations aim no higher than middle management"

No matter where you go, there are rules. You can either live by them, go elsewhere, or pay the consequences.

Even if you OWN the company, you will be told how you can, and cannot, treat your employees. You will be told what taxes to pay.

If you life in anyone`s house, be it your parents or one you rent, you have rules you must follow, or get out.

Even if you own your own home, someone is telling you things you can, or can`t, or must, do.

The trick is to live where you want so what you want is allowed. Otherwise, if you don`t follow the rules and/or laws, you will face consequences. Want to drive 90mph? Fine, go ahead, you will get a ticket and eventually lose your license.

This kid just learned that doing what he did will get him public humiliation. So he`ll either: a) not do that or b) try to be more sneaky.

I don`t know, I think the kid isn`t going to be embarrassed at all. If anything this is like holding a sign that says "I`m cool and rebellious and I get into trouble a lot because I`m a bad boy." If the sign said "I steal money from my dying grandmother" it might work, but that`s about it.

I don`t know if it works, but it will embarrass the hell out of them. I would do it to my kids in a heartbeat. Anyone who thinks it`s child abuse should never have kids. It isn`t abusing them. If they hold up the signs and don`t care that everyone knows, they have bigger problems. IF it gets them to stop, job well done.

His parent`s don`t want him smoking weed. That`s what has to do with it. When he`s 18 he can do whatever he want, right now he is their responsibility. My younger brother cost my parents thousands of dollars in fines by the time he was an adult because of it.

You missed my point. I`m not saying that they shouldn`t be punished. What I`m saying is you`re taking a child and putting him in an environment that is much more acceptable to that type of behavior than your Household.

There`s no `humiliation` here. I`m sure the kid got a couple of high fives.

@mcboozerilla The negative effects of weed are really played down in today`s society. Sure, compared to some things out there, it`s not that bad, but it`s definitely not something I`d want my child getting into under my household. Also, a lot of nice jobs these days have started drug testing when considering applicants. It`s a good way to weed-out (no pun intended) applicants who may not make the best employees.

Yeah, nameless is pretty much right. At that age a lot of drug use is about the social boost it gives, which usually results in the young people we all know from the internet who obsessively try to make sure everyone knows "YES, I DO DRUGS! I AM A DRUG USER!" through any means possible, so really I don`t think embarrassment will be an issue. I`m guessing from most of the indications here that whoever designed that punishment is probably some out of date churchgoing busybody who doesn`t have any idea what she/he is doing.

They look a bit unhappy, but I`m guessing that`s more from having to stand in the street on a hot day for an extended period.

Kids love that california hippy new age crap because the consequences are so little. Now, taking the xbox or no allowance is cruel and unusual punishment. My daughter was rude to her mother. I disconnected the cable tv until she treated her mother with respect. Just imagine a 15 yr old angel. It was easy. I`m smarter than a 15 yr old. This was 20 years ago. The canadian government would put them in a foster home with punishment like that today!
