That looks as if it may be seitan, which is wheat gluten.
We make a mock breakfast sausage that looks like(In my opinion) poop, before we steam it. Then it looks much better. We then slice the roll of seitan crosswise and fry like a sausage patty.
Ends up looking and tasting very similar to pork sausage- and the texture- the key element- is similar as well.
I see these meat `alternatives` in stores, but what is the point? If you`re going to eat commercially processed foods, you may as well pig out on Dorito`s and McDonald`s, and be done with it.

    Because meat is necessary.

    We are not herbivores.

Only reason I could think of eating garbage like that is if you are trying to intake lots of protein.

I am a vegetarian and I would not eat that either. Not all cruelty free food looks like $hit. ANd my meatasaurus husband likes the taste of any meat free stuff that I have made, but it`s home made not pre packaged.

This has to be the greatest food on the planet because the human body doesn`t have to change a thing from consumption to elimination. It comes out the same way it goes in. What a time saver.

    Because meat is necessary.

    We are not herbivores.

No, we`re very versatile omnivores. In this, as in many other things, humans are highly adaptable generalists.

Humans can thrive on almost any combination of meat and plants, from almost entirely only plants to almost entirely only meat. Meat isn`t necessary if you have the right knowledge and live in a developed country (in order to have easy access to sufficient variety of plant food) because the only essential nutrient humans can`t get from any plant source is B12 and you can get that from a lab/factory (it`s a waste product of some bacteria) or, if you really want to go fully natural for some reason, the right kind of dung. You need very little B12, but you really need it or you will deteriorate badly over a few years and eventually die.

You really need to know what you`re doing, though. Mix `n` match is the key - different plants bring in different amino acids and other essenti

A bit extra: You don`t need either meat or a developed country if you eat egg or dairy products. But that`s not strictly speaking a vegetarian diet.

I quite often eat vegetarian meals. Not because I`m a vegetarian but because some of them are filling and tasty. You can get pooptastic vegetarian turd replicas that will taste like dirt if you`re lucky, but you can also get meat gunk products made from unidentifiable animal carcass scrapings stuck together with cheap fat, and they`ll taste worse.

Only reason I could think of eating garbage like that is if you are trying to intake lots of protein.

Many people don`t know that humans don`t use any of the proteins they eat. Many people don`t even know that it`s proteins, plural. There are many proteins.

The important thing is amino acids, which proteins are made from. Our bodies cut up the proteins we eat, diving them into the individual amino acids. Those amino acids are then used to make our own proteins. It`s recycling, not reusing.

Plant proteins don`t contain the right (for us) proportion of the amino acids we can`t make ourselves (essential amino acids), so you can *very* easily eat lots of vegetable proteins and still suffer from protein deficiency because the inadequate supply of essential amino acids means that you can`t make enough of the human proteins you need.

So you need to eat different plants with different combinations of essential amino acids.

ShadowVamp: In regards to soy alternatives being utlra-healthy, I`m afraid not. Unfermented soy products (most American forms of soy) are extremely hard to digest (hence the reason soy is a major allergen) and contain goitrogens (inhibit thyroid function) and phytoestrogens (hormone). Soy is a legume, and as with all legumes, including nuts and seeds, proper preparation, i.e. soaking and fermenting, help to break down the natural toxins and enzyme inhibitors to make it easier to digest them. Remember, plants naturally don`t want their seeds to be digested if they`re going to survive as a species. You can learn more at westonaprice.org

I see lots of products like this on the market and I have to wonder... if you`re eating a vegan diet not just because its healthier, but to save animals etc etc... then why would you want to still taste what animal-based food tastes like? "I love animals and want to keep them from being eaten, but I still want enjoy how they taste" isn`t that being a huge hypocrite?

""I love animals and want to keep them from being eaten, but I still want enjoy how they taste" isn`t that being a huge hypocrite?"

No, doing that and still eating the animals is being a hypocrite. Being a hypocrite is going against something you believe, if you believe that you shouldn`t eat animals, then eating a meat substitute with no animal in it is perfectly fine.

Those are some dodgy looking.....things, stuff I get looks and probably tastes a lot better.

Most kids, like myself, grow up in a carnivorousness household. People get conditioned to like different foods. How many people do you know of that did not like the taste of beer at first, but later on drink it like water? I know many. When I decided to not eat flesh anymore, certain foods that I had been conditioned to like were difficult to no longer consume. So I bought veggie burgers and veggie spicy chicken patties. The first year those type products helped me re-condition my taste buds.

So, no, it has nothing to do with hypocracy and everything to do with the psychological aspe
