I find this such a difficult thing because for me, the term has changed. I have never once met someone with a learning disability or spoken to somebody with downs syndrome and thought "Wow, you`re retarded"

I did however, stare in shock as I sat next to someone who I knew had no discernible disabilities and have them ask me what `alphabetical` meant....at our high school graduation.

Yes. Carl. YOU are retarded.
I don`t call the mentally handicapped "Retarded". I find it offensive and save it for the truly stupid denizens of society.
"Retarded" simply means "slow." It was once the compassionate term for people who were previously called "idiots," "imbeciles," and "morons," which names were not considered insults till they started being used as such.

Sadly, it doesn`t matter what we call them -- "handicapped," "disabled," "challenged," "delayed" -- whatever name we choose, it will come to be used as an insult, and compassionate people will have to choose yet another name for them. It will never end.

@ Zeegrr60. I have an autistic son who happens to be very verbal. Not "Retarded". Pulls A`s and B`s in school. Now I know you might think Asperger`s, but no... just high functioning. All the other traits of Autism are very obvious though (hand-flapping, over expressive emotionally, etc.). So yeah. You are misinformed.

People on tha autistic spectrum are generally characterised by difficulties in communication, difficulties in non-verbal cues or non-literal speech, difficulties in understanding that another person`s knowledge or thought processes differ from their own. It has nothing to do with speech.

Retarded is not a medical term in the UK, although it may be in the US. We use `developmentally delayed` unless they have recently changed it without telling me.

Zeegrr60, "True Autism" sounds like an actual medical condition, too. What is an inability to speak? All in one`s head? I`m just saying that this is how I see it.

Mental retardation is an actual medical condition. To call a child "Autistic" when they are actually "Retarded" is a misdiagnosis. True autism is marked by an inability to speak.

I point out the definition of retarded, but it`s still funny, even if it`s politically incorrect
