I`ve seen honesty shops here in the UK, but not usually groceries. Things like Honesty Bookshops and stuff though, yeah.

pshht, there`s several places in Canada that work on the "honour" system as well. We bought some peaches like that in Gabriola like that

How much further along would society be if people were honest?

I`m with Kegomatrix. People piss me off too.

Most people don`t bother stealing coffee and snacks. This wouldn`t work ANYWHERE if it was a diamond jewelry store.

I wish this would just be possible everywhere... And the more I think about it, the more I get upset over the fact that it would be impossible. People piss me off.

Catgirls! (ok, I do understand they`re make-believe, really I do!)

Oh, it doesn`t mean they`re ALL untrustworthy, but yeah, most of humanity isn`t to be trusted until the INDIVIDUALS EARN that trust.

And dogs, they can earn my trust too!
Even cats. I wouldn`t trust an unknown cat right off, I stay alert until they tell me if they`re friendly or not!

BroFist back at ya @El_Chinche!

Dang! I did it wrong! My bad ;-)

@Buiadh: The phrase I used is VERY common in North America, it in no way implies racism OR bigotry. However I don`t blame you if you didn`t know that, eh? But it`s true.

I also don`t trust _____ as far as I can throw them:
Priests
Salespersons
Politicians
Dogs
Bankers
Insurance agents
Cops
(insert any race here)
(insert any nationality here)
(insert any political orientation here)
(insert any religion here)
(including Buddists!)

Get it? K-thx.

On a small island off (big) Vancouver Island, we came across a pottery studio with an "honesty store." From little $5 bowls to large pieces worth over 100, it was all laid out for the taking, as was the jug for money, whenever the artist wasn`t in. Apparently it worked out just fine, because I`ve been told it was there years later.

I am not sure this person deserves honesty. After all they are too lazy to work in their own store and too cheap to pay someone else to do it.

Again, Mr. Pot, there is a kettle I`d like to introduce you to. So I confused bigot with racist but my argument still stands, and you`re still wrong. Since I know you don`t like anime here you go.

But you seem to be picking and choosing what you want to see, so whatevs!

@Buiadh
Hmmm...no. I never said I agree with 5Cats, I said we came to a mutual understanding. I don`t see how 5Cats post was racist. I interpreted his comment as him saying that despite there being millions of Filipinos he wouldn`t trust he knows that it is unfair to judge the entire Filipino culture based on the actions of a minority of non-nice individuals. Then again I`m a glass half-full kinda guy, not some negative nancy. Get off that horse and join the rest of us here in reality

Also as far as that hypocrisy comment goes, pot calling the kettle black dude.

I now leave you with a delightful dance.

Also @El_Chinche - You assosiate yourself seemingly willingly with this? If so you`re not as liberal as you think.

"There`s millions of Filippons I wouldn`t trust as far as I could throw them!"

Which is an equally bigoted post as the one LIK made.

Jesus H. Way to make something out of nothing.

I didn`t say anything about anyone attacking Europe, El_Chinche. I said that as soon as there is a post dissing Europe you invariably get Europeans defending it, right? And then the Americans call us butthurt because of it...

THAT is my point.

@Buiadh
The only one who attacked europe was Steelgrid. In fact no one else even mentions europe by name. If you take some of the comments as an affront to europe then perhaps that says more about you and your view of europe than it does about the people posting here.

Also kudos to lostinkorea. When you get someone as super liberal as me and some one as hardcore conservative as 5cats (brofist btw) to come to a mutual understanding, then either you`ve failed miserably at what you were trying to say or you`ve done something inexplicably right.

"it can be less about affordability, and more about the generally selfish attitude of self-entitlement"

And I agree with @MacGuffin: It`s not about "poverty" it`s ALL about greed.

9/10 criminals would rather steal for $5 than work for $20, even though both take the same time and effort.

@el Chinche is correct: Don`t judge millions by the actions of a few!

There`s millions of Filippons I wouldn`t trust as far as I could throw them! Yet the VAST majority of Americans (and Canadians!) are still good folks.

The "trick" is in the final paragraph: they make money because tourists love to "pay extra" which makes them selves feel SO superiour...

@Thread - Wow. And the same people have a go at the Europeans when they defend their country. Hypocrits much.

All of you saying this couldn`t happen in the US....well I live in the USA in a small town, and we have some places like this around. I`ve shopped at self-service farmer`s markets for produce, you just leave money in a box there. As far as I know people respect it. I also bought something at a gift shop once while the owner was gone for a long lunch, and left money on the counter as the sign asked.

"This would never work in America because you can`t even walk around your own neighbourhood alone without getting stabbed by a 13 year old brat in a hoodie."

I`d rather deal with 13 year olds in hoodies than terrorist groups or kidnapping/ransom gangs

My point is that you shouldn`t make snap judgements about an entire culture based on your limited, preconceived, misinformed prejudices. It makes you look stupid. There are non-nice individuals all over the world and there are good people in between, stop being so stuck up and assuming that one culture is beneath another just because you have some bigoted beliefs.

I think in Western society it can be less about affordability, and more about the generally selfish attitude of self-entitlement some members of society have. A place I used to work back in `98 was a technology business, and business was booming as the internet was really taking off. The boss`s son worked there; he drove a BMW Z3 and was quite rich. Every week, I used to volunteer to go down to the local Chinese and pick up a takeaway meal for Friday lunch. I`d just leave the menu, and asked people to write what they wanted and leave the correct money. Just about every single time, it was about 10% short, which I had make up myself. I kept a closer eye one week, and, sure enough, it was the boss`s son that could well afford it that wasn`t paying. So, I stopped doing that particular favour, and when I was asked why I made sure I told them that not everybody was paying their fair share, so everyone would have to get their own lunch in future.

We had one of these in the extremely small town where i grew up in b.c. As with most things it was ruined by a small group of deadbeat non-nice individuals who would load up on groceries and also help themselves to all the money.

These rural island communities really are lovely places. Funnily enough only a few weeks ago I was island hopping in the Philippines, and the people in places such as this are so friendly and welcoming and there is a real sense of community. That`s not to say that there aren`t problems, but there`s a remarkably low level of crime, in the rural areas anyway. It`s not a chain store it`s a local shop, stealing from a place like this would be akin to stealing from yourself.

This would never work in America because you can`t even walk around your own neighbourhood alone without getting stabbed by a 13 year old brat in a hoodie.

They`ve got a similar system for buying newspapers in the UK at train stations. At peak times, it would lead to huge queues if people had to wait to be served by a shop assistant, so they usually just have an "honesty box" next to the newspaper stand. Ironically, they`ve found they make more money than the newspapers` face value by working that way, since most people just put in the nearest coin up when they don`t have the correct change. Also, they`ve found that if you paint a pair of cartoon eyes above the box, they make even more since less people are tempted to be dishonest `with someone watching`.
