There are stupider sports in the Olympics but I really don`t see this happening soon. They will need a lot more than one man on the council pushing for it.

I loved how the guy was saying they need to take some of the eroticism out of it at the same exact time they were showing a cute girl with a white fluffy feathery thing around her butt bending over.

If I didn`t think this wasn``t neccesarily the best thing for young girls to be emulating, I`d be all for this. Wouldn`t be the worst thing though. :-)

They should just do gymnastics. I don`t see that much of a difference.

@Brometheus: That was my point when I said it could one day be considered, because it is just another piece of gymnastic apparatus like the beam and parallel bars. But, the stripper image right now would make it a bit difficult to have 13-year old gymnasts doing it!

Being that I have a huge project to finish this weekend I thought this would be a perfect time to research pole dancing. Looks like it started in the 1920`s with show dancers using the circus tent poles in their act.

"These girls are athletes," mmm hmmm, I`d watch it. It`ll the first Olympic sport where members of the audience leave bills of various denominations on the railings.

@burbclaver - I seriously doubt they would add this though. It`s not as challenging as other gymnastic events, so there`s really no point in adding it since the Olympics is about competition and excellence. The point I`d like to make is that if she could do this, she has the athletic ability to do gymnastics, which is a step up. She should raise herself up instead of trying to lower the Olympics to her level. That would be in the true spirit of the Olympics.

If they rebranded it as vertical pole and removed the sexual connection and the dancing aspect, it could fly as an olympic sport. That`s a tall order, though.

There are vertical pole gymnastic events that aren`t sexual, e.g. mallakhamb.

I definitely respect their fitness, and I would actually like to try it. But over coming the stigma is another thing. How do you convince the general public this pole isn`t a phallic symbol, as it was originally intended to be with pole dancing? They have their work cut out for them, but we`ve been making social changes a lot lately...or trying.
