Children are little terrors when they`re in their teens. They are truly awful and SO hard to deal with. I think that children are often left unchecked by their parents and that most of them need a good slap across the mouth. I don`t, however, think that a child should ever be left with bruises. Ever. This man took discipline too far.

Fembot, if you ever GET to the point where you feel the need to strike your child, you have already failed as a parent.

"got physical with her, leaving her with superficial injuries."
What does that mean? A minor welt from the belt or just red mark on her arm where he yanked her back in the house?

Need more info. Could be the kid needed it.

@Hedkwab...Not necessarily, physical disipline is an alternative way of parenting, not a failing way. I was spanked as a child and I am not a violent person at all. If anything getting spankings/groundings taught me that there are consequences to negative actions that I take in life.

bottom line is you are not allowed to leave marks on a child from hitting them.

honestly though, having come from a home where i was whooped all the time...did nothing at all to change my behavior. just made me think that problems with others are solved through violence...funny thing is that is exactly what the research shows it teaches kids.

"Spare the rod, spoil the child." You don`t need to hit them hard enough to leave marks though. I grew up in a family that delivers spankings and none of us grew up violent, extended family included.

"Philip Caminiti, 55, pastor of the Aleitheia Bible Church, was convicted in March of eight counts of conspiracy to commit child abuse for instructing church members to punish children by hitting them on the bare buttocks with wooden dowels to teach them to behave correctly, in keeping with the church’s literal interpretation of the Bible."

If God exists as per the Bible and is not pleased, then it is because the guy didn`t beat her properly. Of course, he`s ticked at all those unmarried rape victims also...

As to physical punishment for a child, that is a highly controversial debate. I, personally, am against it - though my wife stated her parents did in extreme circumstances used a bare handed spanking for punishment. Unfortunately, I do not trust most parents to understand how hard they are hitting even when bare-handed, and I definitely don`t believe they have implemented proper rewards and punishments before resorting to physical p

Wait - "Beating his daughter" (our headline) becomes "Allegedly assaulting" (their headline) and finally resolves to "slightly hurt" according to the authorities (actual article)? Any word on how news travels fast, apparently via game of Telephone?

So she wanted to go to a party at 1 am and there was a fight.. hmm.

Oh yeah, and once I finished reading the article - Dollar and Bonner. Couldn`t have made that up.

    Here`s the police report.

After their initial argument, she did the mature thing by leaving the room. His rage had not been fully discharged, and he believed it was his right to discharge it by abusing her, so he pursued her to the kitchen where she`d presumably gone to calm down. He tried to engage her again. She did not insult or attack him, but attempted to set a boundary, telling him she did not want to talk at the moment. Having been twice denied an avenue for discharging his rage verbally, he abandoned all pretense of civility and attacked her physically. He charged at her, slapped her in the face, and grabbed her shoulders. For the third time that evening, she responded with restraint and maturity: she tried merely to escape.

Her refusal to submit to his abuse meant he had to escalate the situation if he was to get his satisfaction, which could only come from her submission. He began to choke her. By choking her he was literally preventing her from speaking--her only offense thus far.

With verbal communication off the table, her only option for self-preservation was to ward off her attacker with blows. Her final refusal to play the part of his willing victim enraged him, so he slammed her to the floor, flipped her over, and began spanking her. She continued to struggle against this assault, so he punched her, then he began to strike her repeatedly with the nearest weapon he could find: his shoe. He did this in front of her sister. When her mother showed up, he stopped.

Someone--probably one of the sisters--then called the police. The sisters gave matching verbal reports when questioned by the responding officer. When asked to provide a written report, the victim`s sister was pressured by her parents to lie about what she`d seen, so she made omissions in order to protect her father. When the discrepancies between her two stories were pointed out, she admitted her original verbal report was true. When separated from her parents and allowed to write another report, she produced one that matched her original verbal report.

The officer, whose options included either issuing a citation, separating the parties, or offering mediation, (making an attempt to convince the parties to reconcile immediately at the scene) decided the situation was too serious for any of these options, and placed the father under arrest.

So beating his daughter is another way of saying “superficial injuries.” and "slightly hurt" over an argument?

    Way to exaggerate IAB.

@Hedkwab Oh look, another terrible parent who refuses to discipline their child. There`s a difference between `beating your child` and physical discipline. There are some situations where physical discipline is the only option, and it has a lot to do with the specific child. Was what happened in this video physical discipline or child abuse? Who knows?

Well, on one hand it`s a religious leader, and they don`t seem to have such a great track record these days.

On the other hand when it says he "lightly hurt" his daughter and she had "superficial injuries" it doesn`t exactly sound like the dude beat the daylights out of her.

Cases like this very much appear to be mostly about self-righteous individuals looking for an excuse to force their beliefs regarding corporal punishment off on others rather than about said people actually believing what he did was abusive, especially if the "injuries" inflicted were as light as they sound.

My personal belief is that physical discipline should be an absolute last resort and should be avoided if at all possible, but I also firmly believe that people should have the right to act as they wish as long as they don`t impact others. Imo that extends to childcare, and the law should only step in when it`s obvious a child is, or could be put in, ser
