No, breastfeeding is not analogous to functions like urinating and defecating. Still, it`s reasonable to at least try to be somewhat discrete, if the opportunity exists. If not, everyone else needs to learn to get over it. It`s a mother giving her baby custom made food, after all. And do the detractors actually expect these women to change their clothes in order to breast-fee? Get over it, people, and get on with your lives!

"Still, it`s reasonable to at least try to be somewhat discrete, if the opportunity exists."

Blankets are a standard thing to bring with you when you travel with a baby, there`s nothing difficult about draping it over yourself. Mothers who sit with their tops wide open (like in this picture) have no excuse, they are simply daring anyone to say anything so they have an excuse to rage. She should be embarrassed of her behavior regardless of what she`s wearing.

They`re Air force. Air force reservists at that. I guess I don`t really care what THEY do in that uniform as it may as well be pajamas.

That said, I could see why those in the Air force wouldn`t appreciate these photos. You put on the uniform, you`re a soldier (or whatever the frak the air force is.), one who should be ready to respond to any situation like a soldier should. Pretty hard to do that with a couple of kids on your tits.

They deserve to be criticized. By their superiors, not some 4chan unemployed rager.

According to AFT, the controversy doesn`t have anything to do with breastfeeding specifically, just the use of uniformed images for promotion without authorization. So there`s that.

“The uniform was misused. That’s against regulations,” Kosik said. “I want to be very, very clear about this. Our issue is not, nor has it ever been, about breastfeeding. It has to do with honoring the uniform and making sure it’s not misused. I can’t wear my uniform to a political rally, to try to sell you something or push an ideology. That was our point of contention.”

Proper order of priorities in life, according to the Masons, whom have been using these teachings for CENTURIES:

    1. Family (NOTHING comes before family, PERIOD)
    2. Duty (This pertains to any job, included soldiers)
    3. Deity
    4. Fraternity

Just because you`re a soldier doesn`t make you any less a mother. Your responsibility to your child takes precedent over the duty to you country. Clothes are clothes. Just because its a uniform doesn`t give it any special license to change the fact that some things come before your job. Any decently moral human being puts the welfare of their children FIRST above all other things, with no exceptions. Anyone seeing anything wrong with this picture is either a classless human being, or was raised to put their priorities in a sadly wrong order. Breast feeding is a beautiful and natural act. Get over yourself and worry about your own business.

i love it. now there`s a pious mason saying breast feeding takes precedence. feed your child all you want. whats the point of doing it in uniform? the military works for a SECULAR government. when you sign up you agree that your rights come second to what the military says comes first. im sure proper wear of uniform is a biggie.

I`m a woman and I understand that breastfeeding is natural and I don`t believe it`s practical to tell a woman that she can only breastfeed at home. That said, I don`t want to see it. So if someone whips out a tit to breastfeed in front of me, I`m gonna gag a lil and turn away - they have their rights, I have my rights. Where I get pissed is when they get all butt hurt and offended that I didn`t want to see their "natural" activities. Pooping is natural too, but I`m not gonna watch you do it.

I`m former military. Why former? Because I refuse to let my job come before my rights as a person. NO ONE, not even government is going to tell me I need to resort MY priorities according to THEIR rules... Our military is nothing but mercenaries working for a corporation-run Plutocracy, being sent to whatever countries might give us the rights to their resources in return for leaving them alone... Fact is, when a woman is breast feeding, no one is forcing you to look at her. She isn`t shoving her boobs in your face trying to get your attention. Mind your own business and you won`t even notice its happening.

I`m not so sure about the women in an army/potential war situation with children on the breast.
However, mother nature designed women to feed their children from the breast.
What the f*ck are they doing in the army with kids?
Is this a suitable place for women with children?
As I understand it, Army = defend parent nation, repel boarders/invaders and generally be tough etc about things. Kill them that gives us trouble!
If the event arises that the nation needs defending from an awkward situation, will the army provide special front-line, on-site crèches for the maternally inclined?
"Look, I`m so sorry I can`t man the guns and defend the nation at the moment, tell the enemy I`m feeding". With any luck, possible enemies will also be fully staffed by breast-feeding mothers.
I am saddened by the women who believe that an army environment is a suitable place for kids.
What sort of psychological issues will be created in the children by t

This stuff makes me SO CROSS!
Insomuch as it is a woman`s right to feed her children in the manner she sees fit, (and I absolutely support that right), is the nation`s security at risk from this expression of the right to breast feed your child?
I sincerely hope that the rest of the world has the same view about the bearing and up-bringing of children as shown here. (sorry, defence gun-post out of action, we`re feeding)
    The world`s problems solved.
    Weapons not needed.
    No bombs now, we`re feeding.
This scenario is sadly not a world-wide principle!
Woman with child on breast defending the gun-post?
    Bang, you`re dead.
    Move on to next target.
    Tear-jerking picture in national press.
I hate, loathe and detest war and all that goes with it. I have doubts about the mental faculty of anyone who would deliberately bring a child into this world, in a potential war situation.

    Nice boobs.

Now, here`s the thing--the military is incredibly strict with its uniform regulations. You aren`t even allowed to wear your cap backwards or have any buttons undone (or some such similar rules, I`m not vouching for the correctness of those claims), or they will skin you alive.

Do I think that`s rather silly? Yes, I do.

However, within the framework of that logic, I can see why they would be upset with someone exposing themselves while in uniform. It has nothing to do with breastfeeding being "disgraceful" or anything like that. You`re supposed to be a perfect, immaculate looking soldier while in uniform, and breastfeeding disrupts that image, if only momentarily.

There`s nothing wrong with breastfeeding, but I can see where it falls within the scope of the military`s uniform regulations.

As a veteran, I can say that memeber`s are allowed to sit around and smoke in uniform. We`re allowed to have a beer in uniform, to shoot pool in uniform, to wash our car, go shopping, even horseplay in uniform. Sometimes a shirt comes untucked or a button unbuttoned. You know what you do, as a professional? When you notice it, you fix it. Point is, we`re allowed breaks, just like everyone else. And breastfeeding in an area that is not drawing attention to oneself (just like all of the other activities I listed above) is not in any way unprofessional or shameworthy. That uniform is not being disgraced.

And, for all of you don`t understand the difference, there are all sorts of forces other than front line tactical forces that are needed to run the armed forces. Support services, training, fixed facility medical staffs are but a few. They`re not on the front lines, and they`re vitally needed. So, there are places for all...

Likely they arent doing this while on, say, guard duty, but on their off time, so, w/e.

Breastfeeding is normal...I have no problem with it at all, and dont see it as a "sexual" thing. Peeing or pooing is also normal, but discretion is applied when doing so. Breastfeeding moms that dont use normal discretion, but rather turn the act political by putting it in people`s faces, should expect deserved criticism, imo.

What is the difference between what these women are doing and, say, a professional nurse in hospital greens (uniform) breastfeeding ?? Idk...

Okay, DrProfessor, let me rephrase. You can say whatever you want. If you haven`t served, saying whatever you want about these women is like wishing you had a bigger penis. It might feel good in your own head, but it`s not going to increase the size of your unit, and it`s surely not going to change the way anyone else feels about its size.

As a veteran, I applaud the fact that these women are serving their country. They took some pictures to promote Moms2Moms, a breastfeeding support group at the hospital there on post. They didn`t take them for a porno mag or to be drooled over and judged by people who don`t know any better.

@smagboy1--"And breastfeeding in an area that is not drawing attention to oneself (just like all of the other activities I listed above) is not in any way unprofessional or shameworthy."

Which is all well and good. The men and women serving in the armed forces deserve to relax and unwind, and it would be outright folly to tell them they couldn`t do so in their uniforms. This isn`t "somewhere discrete" however, this is being used as an endorsement on the internet...which has a rather large viewing audience. The military`s uniform is a part of its "brand" so to speak, and they have the final say in how it gets presented in public places. The internet is an extremely public place.

So, again, I have no problem with breastfeeding, public or otherwise, but I bow to the military`s control over their public image.

@swoop408 So the way that infants survived until a good alternative emerged in the early 1900s is disgusting? There is nothing wrong with breastfeeding at all. I do think there is something wrong with exposing yourself in public to do so. Yes you can put a blanket over the baby while it is latching on and even position your clothing and self so that if you need to remove the blanket none of your breast is shown, it is possible. Some babies will not feed if they are being covered up or they get too hot.

Wearing a nursing tank with a loose fitting top over is the best way to make sure nothing is shown in public. The nursing tank covers the bottom, the baby covers the middle, and loose shirt covers the top. There is a happy median in breastfeeding in public and I just don`t see what anyone has to get truly offended about if a woman breastfeeds that way.

If the Air Force decides they have no problem with it, then I have nothing to say against it. It`s none of my business, really. I have no stake in what men and women do or don`t do in their uniforms. I`m just saying it`s understandable that they wouldn`t want this image to be used. It`s kind of an intellectual property sort of issue.

If they were wearing McDonald`s logos, then McDonald`s would have the right to tell them to take the image down as well. That`s their logo, they decide how it gets used.

I dunno... I`m trying to imagine I`m at my company and one of the soldiers whips out her boob and starts breastfeeding her kid. Seems kind of odd. But really the only AR I could find was 600-25 section 2 paragraph 4, which restricts "Nudity of a person, actual, simulated, or animated." That is Army, though. I never pay much attention to Air Force, can`t be that much different as far as standards and regulations are concerned.

Tempest in a teapot. They weren`t doing it during maneuvers or in front of a crowd, but during a break.
I don`t appreciate the exhibitionists who just haul out a boob and plug it in on a shopping mall bench, but there`s no indication these mothers did anything like that. The one on the right is being quite discrete, in fact, and but for the twins, I expect the other would have done the same.

    @leesah,
I think we`re actually in agreement, here, except that I think these women weren`t really daring others to comment so much as trying to make a point about breastfeeding being a good thing. At least I hope so. I`ve seen women use a carefully placed blanket, a disretely opened coat or blouse. I`ve seen women in an airport waiting area in the back seats with their backs to the majority of the surrounding public. And I`ve seen them in the front seats with their nipple sticking out while they rummage for a spit cloth and just not giving a damn. It`s not difficult to have at least a bit of discretion when you`re willing. I certainly support breastfeeding...I`m an Obstetrician.

It is not the beast feeding that is offensive !It is a bit sad to nurture your own offspring while others are being slaughtered in an imperialistic war thinly disguised as a war on freedom ...now that is offensive !

Aside from that this photo is actually beautiful.Breasts give life and to equate feeding an infant with defecating is sad and obscene and really quite stupid.

What is this problem with breasts ? Almost every one of us has suckled from them and they are a fairly obvious part of a woman`s anatomy !People stare at mine every day and I`m sure they know what they look like even with my shirt on .

Why are breasts o.k in porn or in advertising or in fashion or on the beach or for sex but become suddenly unacceptable when a precious ,sweet baby has the nipple in its mouth when this is the most natural and tender thing in the world !!!

I don`t find it offensive, but I don`t understand why you would do it make a point(if they are). Doing it public, meh. They need feeding so do it.

That is a most beautiful fall picture. Two lovely ladies doing something only a mother could do. I am uncomfortable IF those babies are anywhere near "in harm`s way". Otherwise we should be proud such fine women chose to defend America. Nothing wrong with boobies, nothing at all!

I have to crap to sustain life. Can I do that in public too. What about other bodily functions? I have an idea. Lets make everything everyone does a HUGE deal so we can all debate it. We seriously need a "support group" for this. Give me a break.

I`m currently nursing my daughter. She`s not a huge fan of the cover when she needs to eat. When I try to use them, my daughter grabs it and pulls it off her face. I mean, would you want to have to cover your head with a blanket every time you were hungry? It`s summer and covering up is very uncomfortable. That being said, I usually avoid having to do it in public by feeding her before I leave and limiting our outings to 2 hours. Still, there are times when she gets hungry and we`re in public. I try to cover my breast with my hand and be discreet... but not for any other reason than my boyfriend`s jealousy. He just doesn`t want other men looking at my boobs. Otherwise people can freaking deal. Babies gotta eat, and breast milk is better than formula by leaps and bounds, and children, yes your children, should be exposed to it so we don`t raise a generation of people who are so freaking prude that they think it`s shameful to, you know, be a mammal.

I think its a loving, essential part of the mother/child bond to breastfeed, And I feel that there should be no repercussions for doing it in public..The issue I have is with the women who feel they need to shove the issue in your face. Instead of discretely breastfeeding their child in a location away from the center of attention, they decide they need to flop out their breasts at the dinner table, or announce to everyone within shouting distance that "I am going to breastfeed now and no one can do anything about it!"

This is equivalent to a male soldiers, sailors, etc., not being allowed to walk around with a button unbuttoned. Nothing new. It`s how the military operates. If you don`t like it, don`t join. Moving on.

I agree. Whilst no-one should have a problem with a mother feeding her baby on the bus or at a restaurant, etc., if it needs feeding, some people do just do it for attention in inappropriate places where there are easy alternatives available. My sister started doing it one year at Christmas dinner - it`s not like she couldn`t easily have gone in the next room. She was a bit like that: a total attention-seeker.

I agreed with you right up to that point. If you`re doing it in public to teach the world a lesson, you`re doing it for the wrong reason. No-one should have a problem with a mother feeding her baby in public when it needs to eat, but you`re not there to teach anyone`s children about human biology, and if that`s your motive, it`s misguided.

No, I wouldn`t do it in public to teach the world a lesson. I would do it in public because my daughter needs milk. But if someone came up to me complaining I shouldn`t because their child was there, I would tell them that they`re just perpetuating the line of overly (unnecessarily) sensitive Americans.

This isn`t offensive at all.. Anyone who is offended by this needs to get over themselves..it`s boobs..so what..I`m sure a majority of everyone has seen a freaking boob before...and all of a sudden it`s so offensive because it`s in an Infants mouth...I`m sorry but I have seen more a$$ and tits hanging out of coochie cutters and tight shirts at state fairs and amusement parks, and from just being out and about in the world on a daily bases than to be offended by this...

I hate this type of thing.../ situation... whatever you want to call it!

Its reddiculous!!! I breastfed my son for 6 months... and my daughter for only 2 because of things like this! I once sat down on a bench (because i was tired) and an old lady (i use the word lady generally because this BITCH was NO lady) sat next to me.., my son started crying and before i even did anything but comfort him, she turned and said " I hope you`re going to breast feed him here!"
It totally stunned me to the point i couldnt respond properly..!!
But if i had that chance again i would slap the old BITCHS face and scream at her for being o goddamned insensitive!!

My kid has to eat more than you do and if you are so GOD DAMNED against it i suggest you go feed in the drating toilet you drating disgusting peice of poo mammal!!
