Submitted by: fancylad 4 years ago Tech

You make the call, I-A-B: Can and will the Surface take the majority share of the tablet market from the iPad?

@ Gui - my ipad runs beautifully, intuitively with nary a problem. I don`t have to know the chain of computer code that makes it work.... it does.

Apple can`t run without Microsoft hosting Active Directory. Microsoft can`t run without Linux hosting servers. Linux can`t run without Dell and HP creating servers. Dell and HP can`t run without Asus, Intel, IBM, blah blah blah. The closer you are to using Apple the more drating ignorant you are of technology. Know your electronic food chain.

Hey Freddy Ferret. This isn`t 1999 anymore. Microsoft`s OS`s are damn near flawless now. They don`t crash, won`t get hacked and I`ve yet to find a core OS bug. In fact, even IE 10 has been proven to provide more default protection than any other web browser on the market.

Maybe you should upgrade from Windows 98?

Keyboards are not a selling point when you`re paying 800 dollars for a glorified web browser. But since this is an actual PC, a keyboard is almost mandatory. I imagine most iPad users won`t need the complexity of several buttons to push.

I love my iPad and I went out last year to buy a keyboard for it...

I`ve used it twice...

Keyboard is not a selling point trust me.

I`ll reply with a solid "maybe". This looks like a slick product, and the removable keyboard/screen cover is ingenious.

Then I remember back when they tried to topple the iPod with the Zune...

But times have changed, Apple has lost their figurehead and they aren`t quite in their prime anymore. If Microsoft has a chance, now is probably the time.

You`re pretty much completely wrong. The new iPad is more or less similarly priced to Android tablets with similar specs. Also, Windows 8 is far more stable than Android could ever hope to be. The apps aren`t all coded in Java on Win8.
Try again, this time with facts. A 32gb iPad is $600. I can get a 32GB Asus Android tablet for $400. There are better deals on 16gb tablets too.

Windows is more stable than Android like Hawaii is colder than Alaska. Try it and see how many bugs it has, how secure it is, and how many times it crashes.

And there`s your problem. Also the numbers Apple gives for how many Americans they employ include such jobs as the FedEx and UPS drivers that deliver their products, as well as other indirect operations that contribute small pieces to their products but are their own businesses, not employed by Apple.

How many stores do they have nationwide employing a salesforce? How many truck drivers distributing the product? Warehouse people, office/clerical/janitorial?

We have a service-based economy, not a manufacturing economy.
Personally I love my iPhone and iPad and I have no problems supporting a great american company.
A great American company that employs by a large majority foreign labour, and executives have said it`s not Apples job to fix America`s problems (I happen to agree with that, but you have to be honest about how little they do for America`s economy).

I don`t know why there`s so much hate for Apple. Personally I love my iPhone and iPad and I have no problems supporting a great american company. I have a bluetooth keyboard but don`t use it that much just for casual browsing and playing games.

This does look like a great offering from Windows. I also like Asus products. I`ve been a big fan of them since builidng my own PC`s and their new ultrabooks are amazing.

Sorry, no, they`re called netbooks and they`ve been around for awhile. I`d like to say I`m a minority on this, that this "laptop" won`t suit my needs as someone who buys laptops almost solely for gaming when I`m away for a few weeks at a time, but being in the signal corps of the army, a good majority of us have powerful gaming laptops. Some of us that do aren`t even big gamers, we just need something to do. I`m sure there are plenty of people out there in the laptop gaming market, otherwise there wouldn`t be so many large companies (Dell, HP, Sager, Asus, Toshiba, Acer - Just the ones right off the top of my head) putting so much effort in to releasing new gaming laptops ever year. I assure you the death of the laptop still has a ways to go. It certainly isn`t going to be with this little toy.

No, it won`t, because buying apple products isn`t about hardware superiority, it`s about loyalty to apple products. If you don`t buy alternatives now, you`re not going to regardless of what windows or sony puts out. It`s that simple.

it has a usb port. Connect a mouse if you must have one. There was also a track pad on the keyboard.

Honestly, what MSFT ought to do is simply build a hip subsidiary. Its products are decent enough, but it suffers horribly from its market position as a stodgy old-timer. MSFT could continue building standard business and productivity products (including the OS) but Ballmer ought to consider creating a differently-branded subsidiary for hardware (especially) and advanced applications.

beats iPad hands down in features I can see from the advert alone. But I`d probably prefer an Asus transformer as I`d prefer android.

But no, it won`t overtake iPad in terms of sales because people are sheep and it`s a fashion statement. Apple have also convinced their customers that their products are always best regardless of the lack of basic features.

You just witnessed the death of laptops fellas. I been waiting for a tablet with these features for a long time now. Win8 is actually pretty awesome and will fit this device perfectly. The design is on a level of it`s own. Guess that 3700.00 apple book that just came out is instantly obsolete.

This isn`t Microsoft`s first foray into Tablet PC`s though. Tablet support has been incorporated into windows since the launch of XP Tablet Edition way back in 2001. Tablet PC`s were massively overlooked on the Market until apple`s clever marketing department pushed the Ipad as the greatest thing ever to be invented. Years ago I had a laptop with rotatable screen that could be used as either a tablet or laptop, It pivoted at the bottom of the screen and turned 180degrees. It was the size of a laptop, but that was because it had a HDD instead of Flash memory, a PSU, a large(i think Ni-Cad) battery, and required much cooling. Modern tablets use flash, thin Li-ion batteries, and smaller faster chips so less moving parts to cool... but they`re not a new idea.

Microsoft = half-baked beta crapware.

They never did fix the bugs in Office `97 before they stopped supporting it.

I use their stuff because I have to, but that doesn`t mean I have to like it.

Probably around $500 for the RT version and anywhere between $1000-2000 for the Pro.

Ok, so it`s a tablet that can have an attached keyboard. The keyboard comes in different colors. I think they should have showed the interface a little bit more then half a second. While it is a little intriguing, I`m not holding my breath for an over priced half-ass made laptop.

True, but you can`t get a good smartphone without a touchscreen. They physical keyboard is a different story though.

Btw. Touch screens can be good if used right.
You don`t like going to Wawa and using the cool touch system to order your meal?
