I`ll believe it when I see it. Private Enterprise has yet to accomplish anything close to what government has done in space.

It will be interesting to watch the first inhabitants go bats**t crazy as they face the hard reality of never returning to Earth.

Are you absolutely sure this isn`t just Golgafrinchamy-shenanigans to send Bush and the other right wing fecktards off to somewhere that they can`t do any more harm? If they start recruiting at the Republican Party fundraiser for a `special mission`, be on your guard boys.

why not take a sensible step and build a moon base? That way, if anything goes wrong.. you can be home in 3 days.

Traditionally this is not unheard of. The original pioneers
to many lands signed up for a one way ticket. The major differance
is earlier settlers stood a chance of surviving off the land.

"why not take a sensible step and build a moon base? That way, if anything goes wrong.. you can be home in 3 days. "

They can`t be self sufficient on the Moon, there`s no way to create Oxygen or water from there.

I`m hoping it`s true and successful. At the very least, at the risk of sounding cold, it`ll be a very nice experiment in human ethics, politics, and psychology. Very interesting stuff.

This sounds like a modification of Dr. Zubrin`s Mars Direct plan outlined in his book The Case for Mars.

"why not take a sensible step and build a moon base? That way, if anything goes wrong.. you can be home in 3 days. "

Zubrin counters this argument in his book.

Since it is intended to be a private venture they have failed in the single most important element of their business model. How are they going to make a profit? If you want to interest private investors you have to be able to explain how they get paid.

Neat idea but it`s hard to take them seriously after such a tacky presentation... And did anyone else think it was a little creepy that they kept saying "the humans" and not "people"?

How are they going to make a profit?

They basically said they`re going to make it the biggest media event ever. They would turn it into a massive, worldwide reality show. I`m sure if it did happen it would be huge and they could sell advertising for near Superbowl amounts. It would last for decades, especially considering the success of American Idol and Big Brother.

    its a money making scam.

the business enterprise is based on a lie that `everyone in the world will watch`

most people in the world don`t have access to a television or any other media device.

My only question, Is what is the pointÉ and why is my question mark a É.

Think about it, are we going to ship resources back, nope, just to it, which it`s expensive as can be to ship water.

Only private firms, so they are going to rip off stupid rich people, I can leave with that. I better not hear them crying to the Governments for funding when it flops and needs to be bailed out.

Yeah...in 1970 the said we`d have bases on the moon my 1983, and a manned mission to mars in 1981.
They said by 2000 we`d all be flying around on jetpacks. Not gonna happen.

I would gladly live the rest of my days in tiny structures if it meant I would go down in history as the first person to set foot on Mars. Just thinking about it makes me lacrimose.

@LordJim: You bet! It wouldn`t necessarily be as good if I were in, say, the third group to go, but to be even one of a handful of people that could say they`ve been to another planet? Sign me up! :-D

We are using up earths resources faster than the earth can replace them. If humanity were to continue to exist, we need to find another planet to steal resources from. Those that doubt this well ever happen need to understand that alot of rich people understand our NEED to find resources. At the same time, wouldn`t it be nice if humanity could save our planet by stop allowing earths resources to be depleted. We have a big sun. We have wind. We have lots of ways to save earth. But count me in as someone who would love to be part of helping humanity by going to mars if that`s what it comes to. NO GRAVITY MUST BE FUN!!!!

If you`re one of only a handful of people to take the one-way trip to Mars you`d only be able to brag to other people on Mars. It might not be so impressive to them...

No one is going to Mars any time soon. Vision damage and bone loss on a 3 year round trip will sour the expedition. Until artificial gravity is made practical or they can get there in weeks instead of years there won`t be any men on Mars.
