Probably because religion is basically founded on intolerance, and is only practiced by the ignorant. Just a guess.

@DrProfessor: No $#!t, Sherlock. It says "Great for the Seder." As in the Passover seder, where the 10 plagues are read about to be remembered and discussed.

@HolyGod Watch the broadway musical The Book of Mormon.

I`m not Christian, but just for the sake of argument:
"Acting like a whore is better than worshipping a god that willfully murders innocent children and then reveling in that fact."
You are cherry picking stuff from the bible no different than the Christians themselves do. If I remember correctly, J-dawg very specifically instructs Christians to not take another`s life for any reason, and to never turn someone in need away... blah blah blah. Some very important people in our world`s history held religious beliefs: Our country`s founding fathers were mostly deists, for example. Also, a poo ton of mission work and volunteer service comes out of religious establishments. There`s one program where I live that gives families food and gifts on Christmas who normally wouldn`t be able to afford a nice Christmas. I`m not religious, but even I can appreciate that. I guess you should just go take their presents an

    "First born?"

Yes, one of the plagues of egypt that god brought was that all the first born sons in egypt were killed. That`s right. The just and loving god, father to all of us, killed innocent children and babies en masse.

First I wasn`t cherry picking at all. One of the masks was "first born" I was commenting directly on the content of this post.

Second, you are talking about charity, not religion. Religion has no basis on those people giving out gifts on Christmas. They are being good people who happen to be Christian. Their Christianity has no factor on their charity any more than me being an Atheist is a factor on me volunteering at a DV shelter every week. I don`t do it BECAUSE of Atheism. Religion teaches very clearly that acceptance into heaven has nothing to do with acts.

As far as missionary work, a lot of good comes from it. But the primary goal is the spread of Christianity, not aid. That is why the third world is predominantly Christian, because Christians have been doing missionary work for so long and if you want shoes and a sandwich you come read the bible too. I`ve done missionary work.

@HolyGod Right, but by only making that statement you are implying that Christianity teaches murder, which is simply not ture. Also, charity IS influence by religion because it is taught in religious texts and teachings, and religious establishments set up charities themselves. I`m not saying only religious people are good and caring people, but I`m saying that religion gets results. A lot of non-profit charity organizations in this country were born out of religion. Also, according to the teachings of Christianity, missionary work shouldn`t be about spreading Christianity but about helping people, and therefore, spreading "jesus`s love" or whatever other mumbo jumbo stuff there is.I suspect that a lot of missionary folks overlook this, though.

Know it`s hard to see by our standards of today, but religion helped evolve society. It is such a natural thing that cultures naturally came up with their own religions even though they never met each other.

As true as it is that things of great evil have been done in the name of religion, so have many great things as it has formed societies and gave hope to millions.

Religion can be used for bad or for good, it mainly depends on the people behind it. Just like a movie can be PG or X rated. It is up to the people that create the story and the people that watch and react to it.

@thatjimguy The funny thing is that the little whiny atheists that don`t understand this are the same ones that arrogantly yell that their view of the world and creation is right and scientifically proven. They obviously don`t know or understand history. History tells us that our beliefs concerning the world, it`s origin, and the meaning of life are most likely wrong.

    "religion helped evolve society"

Absolutely. Religion is an invention of man to be used as a catch all for questions we don`t know the answer to.

How does the sun rise? Why are we here? What are stars? Where did animals come from? What happens when we die?

As science answers questions they come off the list.

Once again I am amazed at the anti-religious sentiment online from some very angry people. I always wonder what horrible first-hand experience happened to some people to make them hate people with faith so much.

I also always have to laugh at all the hypocritical comments like "religion is basically founded on intolerance, and is only practiced by the ignorant." or from another post today "Your god is a cruel god, and he deserves death." Oh the irony!
