It`s not easy being green... err, gay ;)

I wonder if there`s going to be story where he has to rescue people from a burning church but they go all judgmental on him and refuse to be saved.

"This would have made the movie WAAAYYY better."

Nope, it just would have been the worst GAY superhero movie ever and still be awful.

It`s funny that this was released after the movie came out so they wouldn`t lose any sales

But it`s not, it`s one of the Alternate Universe versions of the Green Lantern, not the one everyone knows. Lame.

It seems like a sales generating stunt (how many mint copies of this ish are going to be squirreled away in nitrogen-filled baggies in anticipation of a retirement bonus one day?). But I suppose a gay hero won`t attract any more attention than a black character one day.

@sathan I agree with you. 75% of my friends are gay/lesbian or bisexual and so obviously I support gay rights but I feel like this is wrong and definitely a publicity stunt and not done for the right reason. That is just my opinion though

@lessah Sorry, but there is no reason to assume this was done for no other reason other than publicity.

@Fredspudman got me there. I even watched that video before. Media may not be science, but I wasn`t claiming that it was.

@madduck We`ll just have to wait and see just how much of an increase there is I guess. I can understand there will be an increase no matter what, but how much will influence play a role? Can you say that influence never has anything to do with someone being gay?

@enjin
i couldnt agree more. society will never get over its prejudices as long as there is someone keeping track of how many black, hispanic, asian, female, homosexual, transgender, etc people have held what position. its even more irritating when its a fictional character and position. i felt the same way when it was announced peter parker was gonna be replaced by miles morales who is apparently half black and half hispanic.

Creating a new superhero and making him gay would be showing that they acknowledge and are accepting of the gay community. Taking a well-established super hero who was obviously not intended to be gay when he was first created and suddenly making him gay is a publicity stunt.

This reminds of of when J.K. Rowling all of a sudden decided Dumbledore was gay long after she had written and published all of the Harry Potter books without a single hint of any such thing.

@personaanima
i can understand that but would you rather they kill off a beloved character just to bring in one that is homosexual rather than just have the current one `come out?`
i can name 3 green lanterns off the top of my head and i dont even read comics or watch any of the cartoons or anything else. it would be much more work to create an entirely new character and be much less meaningful. to have him come out shows that even superheroes arent immune to social pressure and makes the whole thing a lot more like what a young homosexual teen would feel.

I would not be bothered in the least if a writer decides to make a story featuring a homosexual. What bothers me is that to them this is an event worthy of a press release. Essentially using this characters sexual orientation to earn them money. It`s like they miss the whole point that him being gay should not be a big deal. Who a character in a book decides to f/uck is just a tiny part of the story, unless you are making stories about f/ucking.

I don`t mind a gay character, every one has their stories and there development. However, I don`t like the fact that they are changing an established character due to outside pressure.

"I doubt anyone could say this was done for nothing more than politics and influence more than story lines and character development."

It was done because they needed a token gay character since they`ve changed the timeline and there`s no longer a gay son to use. But good for you for always thinking the best of people!

@tsheriff "i dont care about gays or what ever but superheros are characters that people are supposed to look up and be inspired by and i dont think a gay person is very inspiring"

Say that after you have stood in the Sistine Chapel looking up at what a master artist (who happened to be gay) painted. I guess the gay Leonardo da Vinci was not very inspiring either. Or to bring it back to this century how about Freddy Mercury? He was pretty damn inspiring. At least two of his songs get played at pretty much every sports event. How about the lesbian Justin Bieber? She is loved by millions.

So is it URRRUUUUP we should be referring to here?

Not really thatjimguy, just because gay people become more visible due to societal acceptance does not mean there are more of them. If it was the influence of media that `made` gay people then there would not have been gays when being gay was punishable by a long and painful death, we know there were- but many,many kept very quiet indeed.

@madduck Yes, it is being more accepted, but there is SO much media out there that we will find out quite quickly if people are truly born that way or if it is the influence of media plays a part. I guess we will see by the next generation.

Except this isn`t Hal Jordan, the guy almost everyone thinks of as GL. It`s Alan Scott on "Earth 2."
So he`s not really THE Green Lantern suddenly turning coming out as gay, he`s simply A Green Lantern that happens to be gay. Not nearly as controversial as I was hoping.

Oh, I don`t know, just going out on a limb here, but maybe its inspiring to gay people? They`re also people too.

Being gay is finally starting to gain acceptance as normal and natural, so it is essential that some characters in all media and fiction are seen as gay. Gay kids need to see they are normal- and have heroes and characters to inspire them. This is a good thing- and if it is an agenda it is a good one. Not long ago a female superheroe would have been shocking, this is just the same.

@tsheriff: Oscar Wilde? Freddie Mercury? Ian McKellen? Alan Turing?

Comics have been crap and same old for a long time now. This makes it better to some people, same old to most people and worse to very few people. If they can die about 50 times, they can have buttsex.

First the movie and now this. I`m not against gays at all but I don`t really see how this will help GL at all. This just seems like its being forced on us so then DC can go "Hooray, we aren`t gay bashers, see we have a gay character...just like marvel!" Seems like my child hood favorite super hero is slowing being destroyed.

You know, I could care less about gay marriage, but I really get sick of the various media pushing it so much. I doubt anyone could say this was done for nothing more than politics and influence more than story lines and character development. For crying out loud everything is gay now. You can`t argue against people who talk of a "gay agenda" when it looks very much as if there is one.
