It`s a bit heartless, but it`s just Natural Selection at work, here.

I don`t think there is anyone who doesn`t know all this in this day and age, they pretty much don`t care and are committing slow suicide. However, how are 50,000 deaths a year caused by second hand smoke? That makes no sense.

    @DShepard

Natural Selection is all but broken by the human race. It is merely a matter of who reproduces the most. Not whether or not they are fit enough to survive. The lowest classes in our social heiracrchy have more children per household than the higher classes.

Typically under-age smokers come from poorer demographics, so these early smokers actually have more kids.

"Natural Selection is all but broken by the human race."

Evolution stops working when the species is intelligent enough to pick a mate for any other reason besides providing the best chance for survival. It gets worse as the species gets more intelligent and can start curing the diseases that would normally select out certain traits. Humans left evolution in the dust thousands of years ago.

You know, I stopped reading when I got to the part about methane being a "sewer gas." It`s not. It doesn`t come from the sewer. It`s one thing to express divine indignation against smoking, it`s another thing to fall into the trap of engaging in misleading campaigns against it. Another thing that struck me funny was that I almost never see Hispanics smoking, though they fell just short of the Caucasian smoking rate, while I KNOW that smoking is huge in Asia, yet Asians/Pacific Islanders occupied the lowest rate according to this misinfo-graphic.

Really jonfoodstamp, my allergies to smoke is a myth?
The fact that I can`t breathe around someone who is smoking is a myth?
I`m sure the pain I get at the back of my throat when I`m around smokers is a myth too, right?

Sorry, but my right to breath is above your right to do harm to your body and my body (as I just so demonstrated about my allergies).

Yea, this is totally biased. They only talked about Phillip Morris, because it`s easy to hate the big bad corporation, that also makes Mac n Cheese, Jell-o, and Caprisun. They should have reported the Revenue of solely cigarette sales, rather than the total revenue, because that includes Kraft Foods and other companies that Phillip Morris owns.

Get out my head IAB, I just decided to quit smoking today. Sure this will be the third time I`ve "quit" but it`s generally for about 2-3 years before I start smoking again so it`s well after I`ve dropped the chains of addiction. Also, I find the threat of death angle isn`t nearly as convincing as the quality of life angle. You can taste, smell, and breathe better, not to mention you don`t stink, don`t live for a chance to smoke=enjoy the time spent not smoking more, and have whiter teeth. I`m not sure why the healthier and longer life thing doesn`t do it for me, but there you go.

Actually NO! You are not allowed to have more freedom than me just because of an allergy. Do people who have a peanut allergy get to decided what type of toppings they serve at the ice cream shop? Do people allergic to dogs get to ban dog parks in their neighborhood? The examples go on and on. You DO NOT get to delegate what happens in public. Stay home if you don`t like it. Or go someplace that`s non-smoking. Lord knows there are plenty of places that cater to non smokers nowadays.

I so wish you were in the room with me right now so I can blow the smoke from this Gurkha Crest Chuchill cigar right into your *itch ass little face. Eff your rights. Your smoke allergy does not supersede the right of the people to abide by the laws of their country to make personal choices of whether or not they can smoke. Our personal liberties supersede your personal maladies. If you don`t like it, stay at home, exist in the inordinate number of designated non-smoking areas, or sit under a rainbow and cry me a poem. If I decided it was my right to stand next to you with an air horn sounding, would you complain?

And the "but but but you get more noxious chemicals from cars!"

So two wrong are making a right these days, yeah? So I decide it`s my right to use a bicycle horn for my hooting instead of the above, lesser of two evils after all.

That`t not the same thing at all. You see, what you are suggesting is breaking laws that are in place that would highly discourage such behavior. You see, if you pull stunts like that, the police are called, possibly charges are filed, and then I get a case on my desk a week later because you couldn`t behave yourself in public. It has nothing to do with the presence or non presence of noxious chemicals. My argument was based within the confines of the law, which in my profession, whether or not you want to believe it, are a very concrete thing.

-The number of chemicals involved is not an argument for or against anything, please do not use it as an argument, as it is a bad one (or more of a non-argument).

@msieg007--Sure, why not? After about a minute or so, your acute anosmia kicks in and you can`t smell it anymore. It would deter anyone else from coming in and bothering me...hell, that sounds perfect!

Regardless, I was making the point that this infographic is using a lot of scary language for not so scary realities. And according to some of the other commenters, some of the scary realities presented here are actually falsehoods.

I haven`t looked it up myself, but I wouldn`t be surprised if the second-hand smoke statistics were complete crap. That`s the only leg anyone has to stand on when it comes to legislating against smoking. If it harms other people, then it can be righteously banned. If it doesn`t, well, it`s their decision whether they want to kill themselves, and they`re welcome to do as they please.

    Side note: I don`t smoke.

I often wonder what they classify as a `smoker` in these cases..

Personally I smoke at rates ranging from a pack a week very rarely, all the way up to a pack over the course of a month +. Smoking more than a couple cigs makes me feel pretty bad; idk how one smokes more than a few a day without feeling like absolute junk.

The majority of self-described `smokers` I see smoke in a day what I do in over a month. I go weeks without smoking at times, as I`m a utility and social smoker mostly. I`m often asked if I`m a smoker, and if I answer yes they assume I smoke like a chimney; if I answer no they assume I don`t at all. Nicotine addiction is like any other in that not everyone who uses is dependent; it isn`t black and white. I`ve had addiction issues, but not to stimulants. They suck imo. Like coke; Sh-t`s so overrated. It costs a ton, lasts for under an hour, then makes you feel miserable. I`d rather just buy something cheaper that doesn`t suck balls.

Philip-Morris hasn`t been affiliated with Kraft foods since 2007...

The whole second hand smoke thing is total conjecture.

I agree it`s bad, but you get more bad things from walking in a downtown area than sitting next to a smoker.
Well why should I have to put up with either just because your ass can`t resist lighting one up while I`m sitting next to you?

Besides, it`s not the incidental "walk past" second-hand that`s the problem. It`s the children, the co-workers, the people you don`t think twice about lighting up right next too. I had lungs like a smoker`s by the time I was 14. Never touched a cancer stick in my life.

Technically it`s not the methane in farts that stinks, it`s the hydrogen sulfide, hence the egg-like stench of many a fart.
