Submitted by: fancylad 4 years ago Sports

They"re the Adidas JS Roundhouse Mids. Some says the shoes of offensive to Black people because of imagery of slavery.

Also, isn`t it really equally as `racist` to stereotype users of the shoe like that? I mean, it shouldn`t be `racist` because not only black individuals are allowed to wear high top shoes.

Of course pop culture seems to dictate that when you`re black the more absurd and over the top your outfit is the better, so these would fit the bill nicely, yet at the same time lots of people and african american advocacy groups teach that the first rule of operation on modern society is to never, ever give up an opportunity to get offended and/or outraged, so this will surely be a great dilemma for many young black males; do they *wear* the completely absurd looking shoes? Of course I shouldn`t act like there`s anything stopping people from doing both...

Images it may conjure up aside the shoes are just fugly, who would really want to buy the stupid things anyways?
It really doesn`t matter if ADIDAS ever made them or not...people can choose not to buy them and if no one buys them then ADIDAS will quit making them. Problem solved.
As far as them being offensive to African- Americans because it conjures up images of slavery..sorry but so does the N word and it`s constantly used by the people who it offends. Maybe more importantly one would be hard pressed to find any culture or race of people that didn`t endure slavery at some time or another...even today there are slaves in the world. Sorry black folk, I`m usually on your side but I can`t see the logic in it that argument.

Black people get offended if you walk by them. So who cares? Personally, I don`t give a drat, sell the damn sneakers. Piss off the ones who are offended by an orange chain that shackles them to their oppressive sneakers. The sneakers that got in their sneaker boat, sailed all the way to the black mans ghetto and forced the the black man to pay the big corporation to purchase the oppressive sneakers. Now the black man wears the oppressive sneakers and tightens the chains around his ankles to show everyone he is a slave to corporate America like everyone else...

I was thinking about the poor buggers who have to make these things. Thanks for reminding us of your working practices, shoe company.

I doubt they ever intended to put them into production, just a marketing gimmick.

Racist? I`m a striaght-laced kinda guy but I am flip-flop on this toepic. I want to stay instep with the topic and not clog the conversation or start any spats. The comments you loafers have made are a croc & I think you should hold your tongue. They`re patently unfunny.

I`m knot trying to start an aguement so don`t tread all over my comments.

BenTheBug-"Adidas owns our soles."

Gerry1of1-"And right on the heels of other good comments, too."

What a Croc!

jamie76-"many people jump to the idea that racism does not ecist"

No one`s claimed that. Anyone who does is an idiot. Racism exists on all sides. But not as much as many huxters would have you believe. (REALLY liked the one where a black council member became `offended` when a white counicl member called city hall a `bureaucratic black hole`. He yelled (for the camera`s of course) "Why didn`t you call it a `white hole`?")

jamie76-"they are "just looking for it"/"

Many ARE `just looking for it`. Otherwise Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson wouldn`t have a way to make a living. And because they DO just look for it, they lessen the meaning of the term, and harm the chances of people overcoming it when it actually occurs.

I can see how someone can be offended by them but to call them racist means they are saying that only a certain ethnicity wears Adidas shoes. They are really ugly shoes IMO and look terribly uncomfortable.

I get that the slavery that went on here in America is much more recent than lets say the Jews being enslaved by the Egyptians but slavery still goes on today. It`s mainly in the form of human trafficking and I don`t see the president, celebrities or any other public figures getting all pissed about it and causing protests and marches. People are just looking for a reason to fight about racism because it`s such a hot topic right now.

If we all stop making it a big deal then it wont be a big deal.

People relate everything to slavery.

For example, in Atl they just banned bull hooks that are used to tame elephants because people are using them wrong. Some jackass referred to it similar to slavery.

Nobody wants to be around you if everything is racist... chances are the people who believe everything is racist, probably only have friends who believe the same thing... because they are racists themselves.

I dont think that the shackles have anything to do with slavery or corporate America chaining down the black community by marketing overpriced sweatshop produced footwear to an impoverished target audience, I think they just added the chains and restraints so you wouldn`t get your sneakers stolen from your unconscious body after being set upon by a wild pack of nig nogs out to steal your shoes.

Yeah it is racist if you want to strive that hard to make it so. I mean you can look at this many ways. Blacks like high tops lets add some shackles and make them feel more comfortable! or hey I just got the new high tops with shackles so I don`t get my shoes hat and coat taken I just get the hat and coat taken under the assumption black people are always stealing shoes hats and coats and it goes on.

The way I see them they are great in situations where you could potentially lose your shoe and not get it back. Extreme sports and amusement parks come to mind but whatever. I don`t care for them anyhow regardless of the true point of those crappy shackles.

well you could go two routes with this...
1. black guys run fast -> chain them down
2. this is production line attire for the korean workshop where it was made

interesting how fast so many people jump to the idea that racism does not ecist and that to see racism in something means they are "just looking for it"/

some things are racist people...in fact many things are and a solid argument could be made for these shoes...though I cannot imagine these things are real.

The slavery of black people in America was a bit more recent than the other examples mentioned in the comments--that`s living people w/ relatives who have first or second generational stories of being in bondage. Also, their fight for basic civil rights was even more recent. Why is it that them being offended by this is so offensive to some folks? At the VERY least, these shoes are ugly.

"Oh yes, because only black people have ever been enslaved, and only black people ever had shackles on their ankles, and only black people ever went through suffering and trials... Only black people ever go to prison.
Yup, only black people deserve to be angry about these shoes."

Indeed, we should probably give them another goddamn scholarship. We aren`t truly equal until we ALL have the SAME opportunities.
Oh sure, it`s offensive to Jews too, they were slaves in egypt once! And the Serfs of england, they were pretty much slaves
Not as much as it might seem. Serfs in England were technically owned by whoever owned the land and they weren`t legally free, but they had legal rights. They could, for example, take a person to court, stand witness in a trial, etc. There are extant original records of serfs winning court cases against freemen and even a few against nobility in cases where the law was clear and the judge wasn`t at all corrupt.

There were actual slaves in medieval England or taken from England by slavers raiding from Ireland or Scandanavia. Serfs and slaves in medieval England were in really quite different situations despite both being unfree.

Medieval England is an interest of mine. The reality was more complicated than the common conception of it, which is too rooted in Victorian errors.

seriously, slavery? I see a chain attached to the end of the chain and think prison

sadly, people who want to be `thug` (no this doesn`t just mean black people, hispanics and even whites try) would actually wear these because they have ingrained that if you survive prison, you must be `hard.` I don`t get why anyone would want to be confused for a convict, and I assure you most, if not all, ex-cons would say similar.

The only thing that gives racism power is the people who assosciate with it.

So if we could stop being such giant prudes and get on with it, its all good
