I can"t vouch for all of these, but some of them actually sound pretty legit.

Two people that I know killed themselves in the last 10 months. They had jobs, families, lots of friends....but only a select few even knew they were depressed. I think it can go much deeper than all this stuff (but I`m sure changing all that would be GREAT! Not holding my breath). Everyone has to deal with this bullcrap but not everyone is suicidal. Its a weird thing, suicide..it makes me sad for AND angry at the person.

I agree with #8, but to me #9 is the result of the same movement which still endeavors to overcome #4

11) Stop pressuring kids into "coming out" and forcing them to adopt an unnatural and dangerous lifestyle that they really don`t want to be a part of.

MacGuffin-"17. Everybody send MacGuffin £1"

Damn, why didn`t I think of that. (Hey guys, great deal, I let you start someone elses happines for only half a pound! Or a buck! Better dean that MacGuffins).

MacGuffin-"18. Get a cat."

Also a great idea! (Got 8 myself...technically 3 & five kittens).

MacGuffin-"If all else fails, listen to this."

Good song. (Damn MacGuffin, you`ve caused me to agree with your three times in the same thread...please don`t tell anyone!)

BlankTom-"i dont get the joke"

The joke is that the idiot who wrote this list probably actually believed it.

1) If they live their life by marketing, they`re idiots.
2) No one `gives` you a job, you have to earn it.
3) Wars happen. In this country, service is voluntary.
4) Women who follow magazines and TV are idiots.
5) Don`t want to live your life under florescent tubes, better yourself.
6) It`s called `Work`.
7) If you live in fear (and are living outside of Chicago), you`re an idiot. Those living IN Chicago fear for a reason.
8) It`s actually very easy to go through life without getting arrested.
9) No one forced parents into any economic postion.
10) Or, stop writing bullpoo `10 things to do` list that is nothing but a very sad attempt to blame business, media and/or `the system` for your choices in life.

@Altaru: "I can`t imagine that would have been cheap over the years."
Yup! Since I`ve paid for most of it myself! You think we Candains get FREE stuff? lolz nope! Unlike the Simpsons episode, we have to pay up to our "deductable" which is anywhere from $1K - $3K (depending on income).
Sure it helps my Mum, who has serious illnesses and would spend tons o` cash on meds, but most of us still pay about the same as Americans do.

Greed, when kept in check, keeps an economy running like a well-oiled machine. But, like putting too much oil in an engine, too much greed will cause it to break down.

Conservatives want to let the floodgates loose, liberals want to dam the whole river up. There is no happy medium in politics, because they`re all being paid off by one group or another.

This is why America is f*cked.

As they say, those who don`t learn from history, are doomed to repeat it...
Financing/loans are the entire source of the problems with the world`s economy.
Bingo.

This is the problem that caused the 20s to collapse into the 30s. People spending money they don`t have.

The issue is, with insurance companies and government funding and the like artificially inflating prices, the prices for many things are well above what people can afford out of pocket.

Simply tripping on a water hazard can cause someone to go bankrupt, because the average person can`t afford the inflated hospital bills and doctor bills and every other f*cking bill they`re going to throw at him for his damaged whatever because they know people with insurance can afford to "let someone else`s money take care of it."

It`s the same with college tuition. Instead of letting students benefit from scholarships and government grants, colleges jack up their prices to include the "free money."

Should read: Generally when we begin psychiatric meds they are continued unless contraindicated.

I am in my second year of Practitioner school (psych ARNP with addictions focus)at SU. I am not a provider yet, but I will be soon. I also work at an involuntary psychiatric hospital in Seattle. Generally when we begin psychiatric meds they are unless contraindicated. I am all for working clients off of medications, but that is not the way we generally work. Now antidepressents are easier for people to come off of then antipsychotics (even though more and more people with depression are being given atypical antipsychotics) it is a rare psychiatrist (in my experience) that takes a patient off of medication. That could because I work primarily with low income medicaid clients, and I don`t see how empowered people with insurance interact with their psychiatric providers.

While that kind of wait IS a little ridiculous, would you rather wait a while or go bankrupt?

You admit you`re on your 10th or so medication, I can`t imagine that would have been cheap over the years.

Insurance and health care in general is f*cked up with greed and inefficiency... You can`t escape one without landing right in the other.

@Lebowski42: I also question if @Jamie is a doctor or a patient at the "nut house" but he is correct: MANY, if not most people who seek treatment for depression are only on meds for a comparatively short time. If the meds do their job the stress and anxiety should lessen, that coupled with changes to lifestyle (therapy helps there) and hopefully you`ll be better soon.

Unlike hardcore kooks like me! On meds for 20 years almost, starting my 10th (? idk I lost count) different type tomorrow! Hope this one has no G-D side effects, eh?

CBT isn`t really psychotherapy... You know that right jamie? Good on you for working in the field but saying things like "most people with depression do not require medication for a prolonged period of time" makes me think that you are either really intent on making a point without writing too much, or have no idea what you are talking about.

Actually, the world does suck and these are all relevant points, but for ordinary people you just don`t have to let the bastards get you down. I think depression is more nature than nurture, so people would commit suicide whatever their circumstances.

I don`t appreciate the military and I`m not about to start... I don`t see what`s so admirable about it, unless they`re rescuing people from natural disasters or some such, but then they can hardly be called a military.

As I have mentioned before, I work in mental health at the master`s level, and I agree with plenty of what is on that list for creating better people and a better society in general. I do not however agree with number 10.
SSRI`s, mood stabilizers and pyschotopic medications are not "dummy" drugs.

they actually do work to correct the problem the brain is encountering. You would not tell someone with heart disease to "get over it" or "work out the propblem" with MEDICATION.

mental illness, which is what clinical depression is, is a medical condition, just as heart disease or any other medical condition is.

I strongly advocate psychotherapy, whether it is CBT, REBT, objects relations, or whatever theory you like, but for many people, they require BOTH therapy and medication. Most people with depression do not require medication for a prolonged period of time and eventually te brain is able to correct the problem and start fun

These are NOT ways to "prevent suicide" but rather to prevent unhappiness, which generally has nothing to do with suicide.

This is undoubtedly a bit biased. I suffer from depression, and have been suicidal in my recent past. Medication helps me greatly, but I`m not a doctor, and I can`t tell you what to do. If you are depressed and considering suicide, get help. It`s out there, and it makes a huge difference when you find the right help for you.

"Obviously spoken by someone who has NOT gotten over yourself. Look here jackass, getting over yourself has nothing for or against suicide. You are spouting ad nausium reactions you have read or heard from other people like yourself who do not truely understand depression."

The only thing that can justifiably cause depression is number 3. If your are becoming depressed from these other things that is depressing in itself. Our 1st world problems are so difficult. Go live in a 3rd world country for a week and lets see who should actually be depressed.

how about this: adopt a more philosophical way of life, i.e., realize from a young age that life is full of pain and sh*t and learn to get over it while appreciating the (sometimes) small treasures that each of us overlook on a daily basis.

#1 Marketing is a function of capitalism, it`s the parents job to instill in their kids proper values.

#2 Your university doesn`t owe you a job, if you wasted your time on a liberal arts degree then you deserve the misery you`re in.

#3 No one is forced to join the military, if you can`t handle the stress that job entails then don`t join.

#4 Finally, something that can be agreed with.

#5 See the part in #3 about not taking a job you can`t handle.

#6 Americans already enjoy a large amount of leisure time, if you can`t find time for your family then step away from the computer, xbox, playstation or whatever else you wasting time with and see to the well being of you family.

#7 & #8 Agreed.

#9 See #3 and quit working yourself to death to `keep up with the Jones` You don`t need a bunch of junk to be happy.

#10 If you are depressed seek counseling, step away from the bar and quit blaming your problems on others.

11. Mass euthanasia (get in there first).

12. Promise to hand George Bush over to the Iraqi people if nobody commits suicide for a year.

13. Same thing, but with Barry.

14. Switch to a 3-day working week. This will increase recruitment to make up the shortfall. Those who had nothing previously will be happier, because they`ll have some money. Those who worked too much before will be happier, because they`ll have more quality free time.

16. Get a calculator out. Calculate the number of days until you naturally expire. Realise how short that is, get your head out of your arse, and start having some fun doing whatever it is you always wanted to do.

17. Everybody send MacGuffin £1. Admittedly, this will only increase *my* happiness, but you`ve got to start somewhere.

18. Get a cat.

19. Get another cat.

20. Stop there.

11. Whoever wrote the previous 10 ways should kill themselves. Please.

12. Why don`t you grow the f*ck up, stop being such a brainless zombie and tell YOURSELF what to buy, how to be cool, what is beautiful, how much college costs (it`s written on the form there), how much kids cost, and pay the f*ck attention to the world around you. We`re not your f*cking MOM, boy.

#2 is complete bullsh.it. Colleges are NOT responsible for finding you a job. This is the time where you need to learn how to network, and how to continually rise. One of the biggest secrets to being a success, is STAYING successful. this is your responsibility, not the college`s.

How do I know this? Because I failed at it. I got my 2 degrees, had a good job, but did not have the conviction to continue bettering myself. Instead I became complacent in my work, which made it easy for the people I was working for to find someone more ambitious in their endeavors thus making me obsolete.

People do not want to give you a raises to do the same job over and over, thats for fast food, people give raises to those who raise themselves.

so FFS DO NOT blame the colleges for your own misgivings.

None of these are legit. None of these are factors that influence depression. Abuse is probably the #1 environmental influence, I don`t see that on the list. End physical, emotional, verbal, and especially sexual child abuse, reduce bullying in schools, and you have put a stop to the five strongest environmental factors that contribute to suicide. This post is bullspit. These factors do not increase suicide risk.
