Will Smith Slaps Male Reporter Who Kisses Him

Submitted by: fancylad 5 years ago in

It went down at the Men In Black 3 premier in Moscow. Was Smith justified to rough him up the way he did?

At first I felt Will Smith was in the wrong because of a cultural misunderstanding but after seeing it again it was pretty clear the reporter was way too invasive and going for his mouth. And it was a gentle little slap, so he handled himself well.

Also, dude has his arm tightly around the back of Will`s neck. He is trying to hold him close and firmly which reeks of suspicious activity.

Ah... It looks kinda like the dude was trying to do the Euro double-cheek kiss but on closer inspection the second cheek hit was because Will turned his head to the left to avoid a mouth kiss. The slap was unnecessary but not undeserved. If instead of Will Smith it was just some dude who almost got kissed on the mouth by some stranger it`d be considered very light retribution.

@jwhalerfan - from one American to another, please stop making generalized and uninformed statements about others. It makes the rest of us look ignorant as well.

Yeah it was justified. Just a light tap. Meh. Dude is awesome regardless. I don`t get why people don`t like him.

This was on the news here and apparently this Ukrainian reporter is known for trying stunts on camera to provoke a reaction. And in most countries where the kiss on each cheek they pull back between cheeks not smear their face over to the other side.

Wow, I can`t believe all the idiotic pandering going on supporting Will`s act of blatant ignorance. Have you ever gone in to hug someone and had that awkward moment of which way to turn your head? Well try doing that while kissing both cheeks. I`ve had to do it in other countries, and sometimes you almost bump lips trying to go the same direction first. It`s an innocent mistake, and Will Smith should be ashamed of himself that he reacted like the lesser human. Poor form.

Misunderstanding on Will Smith`s part.

Mister_C: yes that is a custom. however Smith was trying to move his face away and the reporter CLEARLY didnt get the message. Smith thought he was trying to kiss him on the mouth because of this.

Justified imo.

All he did was kiss him on each cheek. Go to a lot of countries and that`s a very normal way of greeting someone, respectfully too. He didn`t try to "kiss him on the mouth", and sure as hell didn`t deserve the slap!

If this is Russia, and this is a custom common to the guy living in Russia, then no, Will Smith was not justified in doing that. Either conform to the customs, or GTFO

Also, the guy did NOT try to kiss him on the lips.

The hug was awkward, but the kiss were standard European fare.

awkward *daddy hit mommy* moment there.

But I think he was justified, it was hardly a slap anyway. I can`t tell if he was trying to kiss him on the cheek or on the mouth, but either way that`d make me uncomfortable and a little something is totally legit in my opinion.

I drating hate Will Smith, so I hope he has to give up his ass in the lawsuit.

That said, all he`s gotta do is stay out of Russia, and he`s fine.

Yes, he was justified. I wouldn`t let a strange man or woman do that to me! A man should be able to defend himself from unwanted advances, too.
And it`s not like Will Smith was going overboard, it seemed like he`d have let the reporter get away with the European kisses on the cheeks if the reporter hadn`t tried for the mouth.

i don`t think this will hurt Will Smith too much. the man wasn`t trying to kiss him on the mouth, i think WS said that because he instantly realised what he had just done.
I think the worst thing for W is this has damaged his image as the most relaxed easy-going man in the world.

That was pretty well handled, all tings considered.

You just don`t kiss a man you don`t know, or a woman, for that matter.

A light and limp wristed love tap.You could tell he wanted to be pursued for more.

He handled that pretty damn well...you don`t kiss someone you don`t know on the mouth, that`s just effed up. He doesn`t know where you`ve been >=( What if you`re all herpy derpy? The slap was pretty light, it looked worse because it was backhanded. It would have just looked like a tap if he clapped him on the side of the face.

I`m honestly surprised he was so jovial about it. Will Smith has always been plagued with gay rumours. I hart him any which way. This made me love him a little bit more.

Yeah American men don`t kiss on the cheek. He was being nice and leaned in for a hug. It`s not nice to touch lips with strangers.

It might be a common greeting but not appropriate for a random stranger/reporter to just pull that on a celebrity. Customs or not, its called being respectful.

Good on Will for laying down some law.

Here we go blaming it on the black guy again. Both parties are at fault. Will didn`t know it was a cultural thing. Dude didn`t realize Will isn`t a part of his culture.

Yeah, no one tried to kiss him on the mouth. Will just lost a few points in my book. Is he a scientologist or something?

That is a European custom isn`t it? Or am I mistaken? I feel like Will should have known that with all the traveling he does...I think that was too much. Suck it up if you`re uncomfortable in a new culture, and be respectful.

In Slavic/Eastern European cultures, the male-male bear hug/cheek kiss greeting is normal, a sign of respect and affection, not in any way sexual.

This is a fail on Smith`s part. Get someone with some brains to join your entourage. They would of advised you to spent a few minutes brushing up on the culture of the foreign country you are going to visit to pump the tires on your latest movie...

The slap was a hair too much ... but only a hair and still mild considering it was in the reflex moment of being embarrassed ... I can`t really fault Will for this.

reporter went for more than faire la bise, he was going for his mouth just like will said. even though it may be a country`s custom, you can`t expect every person from outside the country to be comfortable with it. reporter got lucky he only got a tap.

Well handled. That could have been a lot more embarrassing for both of them, but Will Smith behaved admirably. Probably a reporter from some rag trying to spin a "Will Smith Gay?" story.

Will was fine with cheek kisses he turned his head and the guy turned it the same way to try and kiss him on the mouth. the guy was smiling until will smith embarrassed him. It was totally deserved.

To be honest, that didn`t look like the reporter was going for the usual double-cheek-kiss which is common in many European countries (yes, even between two guys). He kept turning his face towards Will Smith`s. Unless they do it very differently in Moscow, I think he was going for something else.
Still not much need for more than the push away, but there you go.

So if they want us to respect their culture, they should respect others as well.

The reporter should have done his research to know that men do not want kisses from other men.

I agree with PsychGeek...every country has their own customs. My family is from El Salvador and kissing on the cheek as demonstrated in the video is customary.

@HI-haole....It doesn`t require traveling to more countries than I`m able to name to actually have some education and be able to understand different cultures. Too bad you still feel that everything revolves around you and what you believe.

On a different note, Will Smith is an idiot. Had respect for the guy but unfortunately he has shown to be a typical black man that sees something different that what he is used to as completely wrong and acts as if he is right.

HI-aole:

honey, if you go to other countries, certain things are customary. In some countries, it`s polite to burp after a meal in order to show you enjoyed it; in others, looking someone you just met directly in the eyes is a sign of disrespect.

Take your own advice and stfu.

Not much of a kiss. Not much of a slap. Didn`t look like that much roughing up to me Fancy. What kind of a professional reporter does that? I`d say he deserved it. If it was a guy reporter doing that to a woman we would be cheering her on.
