I don`t know where he got his "facts", but I got a good laugh at some of them. If we were believing in all that this strip says, I would not remain in my beliefs.

While that is all silly, it all hinges on believing Joseph Smith was a prophet and his teachings were inerrant. That being said, look up the story of Smith translating physical hieroglyphs into the Book of Abraham. It is definitive proof he lied.

@IbBored I was raised Mormon. Mormonism is retarded. I barely believed in any of the retarded poo when I was 12, and I believe around 14 I lost all faith completely when I realized that half the poo in the Book of Mormon is made up entirely.

The animals, plants, etc. he mentions in America? Weren`t there until the Europeans brought them over.

The hieroglyphics he translated? They were egyptian burial rituals and egyptian gods.

You should take a good look at what it is; a scam. They`re taking 10% of your drating income, and using it to take advantage of even more people.

Mormanism is a bit absurd, but most of them seem to be pretty nice. A couple kids on their mission helped my neighbor rebuild his bathroom when the floor caved in, a couple years back. He needed help, they helped. Can`t fault them for that.

Yeah, they asked him to come to church with them later, but they respected his answer of no thanks.

I`ll give the standard response to every I-A-B anti-religious post:

Most religions have ludicrous beliefs. Many find peace in these beliefs. Militant atheism has no place in a world searching for peace. If you`re religious or atheist, keep your damn creed private, no one cares to hear it.

"The God of Mormonism and his wives, through endless celestial sex, produced billions of spirit children." Then he apparently called a heavenly council, including his son Jesus and Jesus` brother Lucifer, and they built planet earth so his endless celestial sex babies would have somewhere to go. & this was only 10 seconds of the greatest six minute film I`ve ever seen!

What makes mormons more acceptable is the fact that most of them are extremely nice people. The few that I`ve met aren`t pushy at all.

The few atheists I`ve met seem to want to convert every believer they meet or treat them like an anathema.

It`s this elitist attitude and the accompanying condescension toward believers that irks people, they`re about as prickly as a cactus.

Tell that to those that are completely outcast from their community, they lose their jobs, and have to leave their town because they decided to leave the Mormon, or any other Christian church for that matter.

Religious people are the most intolerant people in the world, and the only people that deny it, are people that are the intolerant religious people themselves.

@CrakrJak: Have you ever considered the possibility that you know several nice atheists, who are afraid to admit to you that they`re an atheist because of how you`d treat them?

I`m an atheist, and I`ve had to avoid bringing that up to some people because I knew that they`d start treating me as though I was a bad person if they knew that, even though I was doing the same things as before.

Not all atheists are alike, and treating them as though they`re all the same is bigotry, not reality.

"The few atheists I`ve met seem to want to convert every believer they meet or treat them like an anathema."

I`ve experienced way more people wanting to convert me or viewing me negatively since becoming an atheist than I ever did as a Christian. I`ve had tons of remarks indicating that it`s shameful that I`m not a Christian, or that I`m going to hell, or just people in general pushing their religion on me.

Atheists try to "convert" people because we`re tired of being subjected to religious beliefs, especially through politics. If Christians and etc would stop making their religious beliefs into laws or pressing their beliefs onto others and let everyone live peacefully, I (and many other atheists) would stop trying to "convert" others. I truly don`t care what you believe until it affects others.

Hate Mormons; drating weird. They also have group baptisms for the dead in their eggshell white temples (everything is white. sin has color). The baptisms are for people who have died but have not yet have the chance to convert to Mormonism or "moronism".

So basically everyone wears white and goes into a large bathtub one at a time, wearing all white. Boys and girls have separate tubs.

Idk what kind of atheists you people all encounter, but most of my friends are atheists and I`ve yet to encounter ANY atheist that are as aggressive and snotty with trying to convert people as those in the Christian-based religions... Carmium has the usual conversation between a Christian and Atheist down pretty much to a T... As soon as Atheists even REMOTELY question the existence of God, Christians get super defensive and make it seem like the Atheist is trying to convert them. THEY AREN`T! Atheism, unlike any religion, is NOT a belief system... It`s a mindset of seeking EVIDENCE... Atheists would believe if they saw CONCRETE PROOF of the existence of God... IF an Atheist seems condescending, it`s because they view just blindly believing what you are told by an ancient book, without sufficient irrefutable evidence it is real, to be idiotic...

What makes you think they have to be judged "acceptable"? What makes them unacceptable, in your bigoted views?

In what way is this worse than any other religion? In the USA you guys even let Scientology be a religion - check out what those guys believe! Apart from a different timeline this is basically the same as every other major religion - Christianity, Islam. Hell, it`s not as wacky as the beliefs of the most modern religion. Have you read what the Church of Global Warming teaches?

As for the mods - how did you let such a disgusting title through?

Would you have let one asking why Jews are acceptable through? Or Muslims, or Catholics? What about Jainists or Zoroastrians? What about one asking if socialism is acceptable? Or one asking if it acceptable to insist that black people are equal to white people?

Where, I am asking, do you draw the line on blatant bigotry?

I lived in Utah for three years. It was like visiting another country.

Right or wrong, the Mormons (sorry, but it`s true) do not have a sense of what the rest of the country is actually like.

They are a religion and a culture which is sometimes very different from what`s going on in the rest of this country... I`m sure if I were a Mormon, I would LOVE to live in Utah.

But I`m not LDS and I`m very glad not to be there. If Mitt is elected, the first thing he may do is figure the rest of the country is ready to become like Utah.

    No thanks.

HiEv; I don`t `wear my religion on my sleeve`, not in proselytizing or evangelizing. Same thing goes for my political stance. If it wasn`t for my baseball cap you wouldn`t even know that I`m a fan.

If someone asks I tell them, but few have ever asked. Those few have been atheists.

Wow! this thread has gone far off!
    1. Do not generalize all christian faiths. Just like you cannot generalize muslims, some christian faiths are more "aggressive" than others.
    2. The LDS missionaries do not knock on the same doors weeks after weeks. At least they should not. They usually have a map of their area and try to as many different location as possible. Unless their area is only contained in a square mile, you should see them only but a few times a year.
    3. Losing their jobs for leaving the LDS faith? What? I think you`re mistaken with another religion.
    4. "Separate bath tubs"? LOL Get your facts straight.
    5. Utah is not necessarily a dream place for LDS. This argument is very objective, and not subjective.
    6. The intolerance is not from the LDS church, but from the people (members or not alike). In fact, the LDS teaches that we "must needs have charity; for if he have not charity he is nothing" (Moroni 7:44)

Its all about acceptance. Not me accepting how they view god, but accepting that it is their right to think about god any way they like, or dont think about god or Mary or Allah or Xenu.

The religious majority distrusts atheists because one of the major functions of religion has always been to provide a way for individuals to publicly signal devotion to their tribe. By making otherwise meaningless sacrifices of time, (rituals) money, (tithing) energy, (proselytizing) and mental real estate (believing), a tribe member demonstrates how far he`ll go for the group. He shows he`ll play along even if the group`s religious demands and beliefs are nonsensical. Atheists refuse to engage in this sort of behavior, and religionists assume this means they are unwilling to make *any* personal sacrifices for the good of others. Such "sociopaths" have no value to a tribe. They are considered essentially inhuman, and don`t deserve the privileges of tribal membership. Hence reactions ranging from dismissal to murderous contempt. Google "The Adaptive Value of Religious Ritual" for more information.

What`s that Joseph Smith, you can put a stone in your hat and find buried treasure? Mmkay.

What`s that Joseph Smith, an angel told you where to find the plates, and after many failed attempts you FINALLY found them, but the angel told you not to show them to anyone? Mmkay.

Seriously, how could any rational person believe this nonsense? You`re no different than any number of elderly people conned out of their life savings.

@Crakr: I`m sure it`s *only* atheists and democrats (which is your ethnocentric way of saying liberal I assume) that are the pushy, condescending ones. No conservative has ever been pushy or condescending in the history of the Earth, and all of the world`s problems are because of dirty liberals. Own up and admit that right-wingers cause problems and can be arrogant pricks. Your unwillingness to do so immediately discredits your entire position.

But hey, in case you Mormons want to give your money to someone, I just found some plantinum-plated books underneath the floorboards of my shed out back. I can`t show them to you but I`ll give you the translation in a few days. From what I`ve uncovered so far it seems that God favours stem cell research and funding for science! It`s really fascinating stuff.

    @patchgrabber, huh?

What`s that about rocks in hats finding treasures? Those rocks are called Urim and Thummim, and they were never used to find physical treasures.

What`s that about not showing the golden plates to anyone? When, in fact Joseph Smith was commanded to show them to three, then eight witnesses that, despite some of them leaving the Church, never denied seeing them.

But you are right about one thing; if everything people say about the LDS church was true, it would surely be nonsensical. Good thing they are wrong. :)

I agree with you because there is not 1 belief in christianity that all people who call themselves christians agree on.

BUT they like to group themselves together for political reasons, "this is a christian nation with christian morality and our laws should reflect that morality." But they get mad when non-christians group them together.

And the really funny thing is if they catch someone who calls themself a christian but they perceive that persons beliefs to be far enough removed from their own (e.g. Mormons) they will say "he is not a true christian". It is like arguing with a room full of schizophrenics.

@lordfoobar: It is well documented that Smith attempted to use those stones to find hidden treasure to supplement his family`s meagre farm income, by placing them in a white stovepipe hat. He also apparently used them attached to a breastplate and spectacles to translate the books.

After reading some of Smith`s journal pages I came across one section where he apparently received a vision to show them to some people. Fine, if that`s the case then I`ll show my platinum plates to a few people and then I`m a prophet. I also wasn`t granted spectacles and a breastplate, rather, I was given two magnets and a pair of magical pantaloons that allow me to find gospel.

It`s not "Mormon hating propaganda". It`s just some of the nonsense they`ve been brainwashed to believe. No different from talking snakes or virgin births or thetans living in volcanoes. Just a different flavor of unscientific gobbledygook the weak minded lap up.

The Mormon church has an estimated net worth of $30 billion. Way to do the exact opposite of what Jesus taught. Although that goes for most religions. If your church is not pinching penny`s because of all the help they do for the less privileged then they are just an evil corporation.

Political, Mormon hateing propaganda. By the way, i am not disagreeing with the cartoon. I just think it is unfunny and one sided. All religons believe in stupid fairytails.

It is the bigoted implication that Mormons are not acceptable that is so disgusting here, not the repeating of the Mormons` beliefs, which are no weirder than the Christian Bible.

@randomxnp: You`re right that Mormon claims are not so different from other Christian denominations, indeed, all religions have the same three basic elements of any cult: miracle, mystery, and authority. Folk-religions were very popular around the time Smith was alive, and this one just seems to have bested the others.

Jan Shipps is not a Latter-Day Saint who has written several amazing works on the phenomenon of the LDS Church. If anyone is interested in learning about their history, sense of faith and love for the God they serve should read "Mormonism: The Story of a New Religious Tradition."

Indeed there are questionable doctrines within the LDS Church as there are in any organized (or unorganized religion, as it were) religion. The nature of the supernatural lends itself to extraordinary and diverse ideas, though I do not think any more weird than the plethora of philosophical viewpoints developed through the various epochs of human history. To be human is to be diverse and different. Thus it is my sincerest belief that regardless of any practiced or accepted religion (my own is Christianity) that humanity will continue to develop new faiths, new philosophies, none of which are entirely new, only refashioned. Good (might I also include SANE) people will also continue to a

Sometimes I like to think that Europeans are onto something cool and then they open their mouths and nonsense pours out. Exactly how is America socialist my small government minded friend and what exactly is it about socialism that you`re trying to equate to me?
In my mind religion is a fairy tale for the weak. Until the day comes that science can verify that there is indeed a God then this ride called life is nothing more than a fluke. Wasting time studying a tale that can be scientifically proven wrong a million different ways makes their remaining followers beyond dumb. But it seems that`s the world we live in.

Sadly I think you`re equating the empirical study of observable things with your philosophy concerning its interpretation. Science can never disprove the supernatural because it does not (and cannot) measure the supernatural. If we are all weak-minded, as you say, because of a faith we sincerely believe and trust, then you have proven to me at least one portion of the Bible; that the wisdom of God is foolishness to humankind.

"@jkfld, this is pure propaganda, and has nothing to do with this I-A-B post."

The cartoon (which uses the data from this poll) specifically contrasts the number of Americans who would vote for a Mormon to the number who would vote for an atheist. My post addresses the question implied by the juxtaposition of the two numbers: "How can it be that America is so much more willing to elect someone who believes in a clearly fraudulent and regressive religion than someone who rejects religion altogether?"
