Link: The Center Of All Things - Just providing some perspective. A homage to Carl Sagan`s Pale Blue Dot, this video explores our place in the cosmos.

Excellent. It`s time for humanity to turn the corner; stop looking towards the Earth as a sacred place and realize that it`s the first stepping stone on a path to our species` immortality.

True, we are not the center of all things in a physical sense. However, unless we find super intelligent aliens, we hold a very awesome position imo, better than a physically central one.

Currently, our place in the universe is the only species of intelligent life that we know of. That makes us the centre of all known things.

Maybe there are other species of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. Maybe not. We don`t know and we can`t even make an estimate of the probability because we don`t know how rare life and intelligence is.

Even if there are hundreds of other species of intelligent life, humanity is still awesome. Billions of years of evolution resulted in us, gracile apes who can ask and answer questions. That`s very special, even if it happens a thousand times.

An example off the top of my head, just one discovery of very many by just one person. Eratosthenes calculated the size of the Earth more than 2200 years ago, using just two sticks and his intelligence.

The next most intelligent species can use a stick to poke into a ant nest and hope some ants crawl onto it.

I always shy away from the definition of humanity as the superior species int the world. if watching the Cosmos has taught me anything, it is that we are not the end result of evolution. We are just another part of it, albeIt a gifted part. Evolution by it`s nature does not have a final goal, but unlimited off shoots.
If you put a person in a pool with a shark, that person would suddenly cease to be the most Awesome species for that moment. Life has adapted on earth in a wondrous Myriad of ways and we are lucky to be part of that.

This is scary. I want to believe a bunch of contradictory Bronze Age legends and rules assembled by the ancient Romans so they better control people. I`ll call it "faith."

@Angilion, I was thinking of your Eratosthenes example during this video without seeing your comment... odd.

The Universe may or may not be infinite, but the OBSERVABLE Universe is a spherical region with a radius of ~15 billion light years, and each one of us is at the exact center of the Universe as we are able to observe it.

"how there can a center to something infinite?"

First of all, seriously, take an English lesson. Secondly, it`s not meant to be taken literally.

*yawn*... we are also DESTROYING. I wish we hadn`t evolved as we have. I would choose any time a shorter life but a maintained and balanced ecosystem than our `virus` approach to the world - reproducing until we have consumed all resources, made extinct all cool animals and polluted our planet to uninhabitable levels (just look at the Chinese/ Indian capital cities!)

Oh how I marvel at our achievements...

Why do people who subscribe to evolution bemoan the extinction of species? Isn`t that a part of it? The strong prevail and the weak are weeded out. Isn`t that the point of evolution? Make up your minds. Either you support evolution and the eventual extinction of species that haven`t adapted to the changing environment, or you spit in the face of evolution to save the inferior species from dying out.

@Tay-Dor, I think you misunderstand, evolution is a phenomenon that occurs in nature and "survival of the fitest" is a philosophy. No part in evolutionary theory does it say that a species going extinct is a good thing. It is simply a set of predictions based on observable evidence. Evolution doesn`t demand species go extinct any more than gravity demands that asteroids destroy the Earth. It just predicts they will, we can choose to try to stop it if we think we can.

It`s because of evolution we humans now have the choice to help OR hinder the extinction of ALL species on Earth, including our own.

Furthermore, the belief in evolution is not the same as "The strong prevail and the weak are weeded out." Educate yourself and you too might evolve.

To destroy your explanation... how do you justify a virus then? In a viral ecosystem (per se), they consume all they can find until they have expended all natural resources until they themselves `die`. (I use the term loosely obviously)

Now take man... we are destroying the rainforests, using up all fossil fuel reserves, polluting the atmosphere... and inevitably we will consume everything until there is nothing left and we will all die out. Survival of the fittest?!

    Other species strike a balance.

I think you`ll find it`s a bit more complicated than that.
