Yeah, lower your expectations, you`ll never make it so just give up now. Keep the way clear for people like me who have ambitions.

I don`t know nationally, just locally.
Here in San Diego County only 15% can afford to own a home and pay rates have decreased over the last 10 years.
    The Amercian dream is dead.

    Let`s see:
    Happily married 25+ years, check
Happy, healthy, well adjusted kids, check
Dunno if that`s exactly American, but it damn sure is a dream come true.

More like the venture capitalist dream. Trying to shoot liquid greed like a drug. I wish I was born 300 years ago.

People who don`t like capitalism most likely suck at it.

The problem of the american dream is that you have to sleep to live it. When you wake up it vanish.

I`m really tired of the American Dream always being referred to as the same thing as capitalism and owning crap.

It`s also supposed to mean that you can be who you want to be, and it should not matter if you make a little money or a lot, as long as you are going after "the pursuit of happiness".

I don`t believe in the definition of home ownership anymore. Apparently, even if you`re single you`re still expected to someday own a home. Heck, if you`re in a relationship you need to save to buy a home. It seems to me that these days one or two incomes is just not enough. What`s wrong with extended family living together to support each other? Whatever happened to passing down a home through the family, instead of selling it every few years to a whole new family?

The official Bureau of Labor Statistics threshold for poverty is a joke... Many economists and sociologist agree that a poverty level for a family of four being $22,113 for a family of four and $11,344 is FAR too low (that is, if you were living alone and making $15k you wouldn`t technically be in poverty, according to federal guidelines).

In response to this, many sociologist use a larger threshold, so the amount of persons who are within poverty would likely be larger than those in the 1960`s.

@ Burton_Ian - they need to update their webpage then. Remember the fuferall when Bush lowered the poverty level so he could claim there were fewer poor people. Family of four earning $19,something is where it is now, I believe.

You see that? The Asians are outpacing white Americans in Household Median income! That MUST mean that we`re being oppressed! Affirmative action!

West Virginia may have the highest home ownership rate in the country, but it also has the highest percentage of people living in trailer parks and dilapidated buildings.
