Link: Silver & Light - A project created with the same spirit that America was founded on. This guy might have the right idea.

The same spirit that America was founded on?
Like the spirit Innovation? Productivity? Both of which are
    lacking in his life.

He spent a great deal of time doing a simple thing. ie Taking a photo.
Even if you want the old fashioned degurotypes like he`s doing it still
doesn`t have to be truck size. Oh, let me guess... he`s an "artist".
    Another word for useless.

    Ian Ruhter Blog

@GErry1: He risked his money to persue a dream. He didn`t demand the `government` pay for everything, he just went ahead and did it.
Also: he didn`t need `permission` from the government as he would in China or other totalitarian places.

I hope he makes buckets of cash selling his pictures!

@Gerry1: To make pictures big like that, he needs a BIG CAMERA! It`s not a negative, it`s a plate! One shot, that`s it, no fixing it in post production, eh?
THAT is why we humans find these sorts of pictures beautiful.

@5Cats - yes, I know there`s know negative. Daguerreotypes were done pre-civil war. If I spent all my time making fire with sticks I`m within my rights to do so, but I wouldn`t be so egotistical as to proclaim it grandiose art. Going backwards was not the spirit America was built on.

@Gerry1 I suppose no one should enjoy opera or classical music now that `rap` has replaced it?
And who reads those `old books` by Shakespear, Dickens and Twain? We have Oprah`s list now!

    The photo plates are beautiful.
But if that`s the greatest thing he does in his entire life, that`s pretty sad.
And this is backwards, not the American Spirit.

I want to do this now too tho. It looks fun.

What exactly is wrong with digital photography?

his images look okay, but if they were done with a conventional digital camera they`d be nothing special.

don`t get me wrong, he`s doing something a bit different and that`s great. but that doesn`t automatically make it better.

"his images look okay, but if they were done with a conventional digital camera they`d be nothing special."

For the artist, the fulfillment usually comes from the process. It really doesn`t matter what you or I think of his work, though I think it`s quite evocative. People hold Ansel Adams prints to be some sort of pinnacle of photography, but the truth is that you can take a class to learn how to reproduce his images. This guy has obviously found his process, and I think that`s great.

What I do wonder is what kind of permits he must have to work with these chemicals in an open environment, in a protected place like Yosemite. He must have some serious hazmat permits, and I would hope he does a good cleanup.

CrakrJak - I think you spelled a wet fart, not a raspberry.

But after an extensive Google search, I cannot find a concensus on the proper spelling of a respberry sound. Wiki Answers completely contradicts Yahoo Answers. It`s dictionary anarchy! I tried several of the suggested spellings but all I got for my effort was a wet monitor.

My point is, there is no concensus on the correct spelling of a raspberry so ergo ad hoc ecto go - my spelling is as correct as yours.

I think you spelled a wet fart, not a raspberry.
The term "raspberry" actually comes to us from English kokkney rhyming slang. The way it works, you take a two-word phrase, the last word of which rhymes with the word you mean, then you drop the last word of the phrase. For instance "troubles and strife" rhymes with "wife," so "troubles" = "wife." "Apples and pears" rhymes with "stairs," so "apples" = "stairs." "Raspberry" is short for "raspberry tart." The remainder of this is left as an exercise for the student.

yup, fair enough. I just hate the smug attitude that some people have towards digital photography, as if it`s somehow less legit.

this guy seems like the equivalent of someone who`ll only listen to music if it`s on vinyl, or anyone who claims that using an e-book reader is `soulless`

anyways, did anyone else think he was cooking meth at the start of the video?

One of the things I judge art by is "Could I do that?" Time after time with "modern art" my answer is "yes", and the art looks like crap. I couldn`t do what he does, and the results are good, so bravo. That being said, something that costs $500 to produce is bound to have an "art world markup", which puts it well out of my price range. We`ve just witnessed the 99% making art for the 1%.

@SpermNinja I totally thought it was going to be about some guy`s recovery from a meth addiction and how photography helped him move on in life.

It ended up being really awesome though. I think its so cool that people devote so much of themselves to art like this. This is true art. I wish I could join this guy for a few weeks just to see how he works.

Wow this guy is soooooooo full of himself. Show the process, show the art. No one gives a crap about your stupid feelings. This had potential to be a interesting pice showing art and the process of how the camera works and how the pics were captured. But instead we get a cry baby

I loved this, the idea is spectacular and the execution and time spent, and the devotion that comes with it is something to truly admire.
