Doesn`t that just mean at least one woman was still left? Why is that worse than being alone? Or am I being dumb?

I half expected the "BUT WHO WAS PHONE" story, but was pleasantly surprised. I`ve always liked this one.

Just in case anyone cares, it used to be like this in English:

man = person. Explicitly sex-neutral, adulthood often implied because there was a different word for children.

wer = male.
wif = female.

English used to use a lot of compound words, so you had:

werman = male person
wifman = female person

`wifman` got smoothed together into the more easily spoken `woman`...which sounded much like the way `werman` was usually pronounced. So `werman` faded away, remaining only in `werewolf` (originally `wermanwulf` - male person wolf).
why do people in this thread keep assuming that `man` refers to gender rather than species (huMAN)
Here`s a curious thing:

There is no known connection between the word `human` and the word `man`. If there is one, it greatly predates history.

`man` can be traced to proto-Germanic (since it appears in several different Germanic languages) and was sex-neutral until very recently. It`s only been sex-specific for a few decades and even now it`s linguistically correct to use it as sex-neutral, like it was for millenia.

`human` can be traced to Latin, i.e. not connected to Germanic languages before Rome expanded that far north.

It`s reasonable to think there`s a connection if you just go on the words without knowing their etymologies, but it seems to be just an odd coincidence.
