Sure you can park wherever you want and you"re saving a few sheckles on fuel, but you still look ridiculous in it.

"Saving a few shekels"?

I didn`t know eugenius was from Israel...oh wait...they aren`t.

OH OH OH lmao, NOW I get the joke. Saving Dollars is not as funny as Saving Shekels because it implies the person doing the saving is jewish because jews love them some savings...right?

I know...I am an irritating old fart...but here I am...sitting in blissful ignorance.

Don`t know why everyone is going on about the safety just from assumption. I saw a video a while back that rated the Smart Car as one of the safest vehichles to drive, it showed a crash test in which it went into a brick wall at like, 60-70mph. The frame only bent slightly because of the strong metal type they use in building it, you`d be completely safe in one. Apart from your legs, I guess.

That`s legal parking here in Germany, several of our senior managers have one as their company car (they could have a big fat merc or BMW, but choose not to).

I prefer under 10mpg when I am not in 5th or 6th gear. Of course if I am in 5th or 6th gear I am doing well over 100

Saving time? It is non-nice individuals like these that get on highways doing 15-20mph by the time we are off the ramp that slow the rest of us down.

I can only imagine the 0-60 in 15 minutes slows them down more than me, because as soon as this poo is out of my way they will see nothing but exhaust.

Okay- a smart car? So what, rather useful things and very popular.

3 out of 6 cars parked outside my window right now are cars in the same size class as this one, they`re quite common around these parts.

I wonder what kind of world we would live in if people stopped worrying so much about what other people thought about them and just went about their business.

I`ll stick to the Corolla pretty much the same mpg, costs less and can actually survive a crash.

Regardless if it fits, I`m guessing that he or she would still get a ticket because they are parked illegally.

Have any of you ever seen what happens when one of these gets into a serious crash? Let`s just say you leave in multiple pieces.

The first smart car was produced in 1998. 14 years ago. But no, this is brand new and not boring.

As long as I don`t have to spend 20min every day trying to find a parking spot, it`s better.

Crash test show the a smart car is *very* robust, as shown when one was driven into a stationary barrier at 60mph.

Unfortunately humans are not so robust, and would be reduced to jelly by such impact.

Primary safety is about avoiding crashes altogether, by having a car that drives and handles well and can be seen out of. Not one that gives the illusion of being in an invulnerable tank.

So smart confident able drivers will tend to drive smaller, more agile cars, whilst scaredy cat jagweeds go for big hulks that handle like a 2 tonne jelly.

European diesel model gets 72mpg. US models (gasoline) get at best 42 mpg. The Toyota Yaris gets about the same mpg and is bigger for less money.

Btw that car goes around 35-50 mpg depending on city or highway driving and is electronically limited to a top speed of 90mph. But I do prefer the Mini in terms of look.

these POS`s get 32mpg...that is not a gas saver. my 350Z gets 30mpg and has enough power to be considered a freaking car instead of a lawn mower.

also, considering that this crappy little thing has normal doors parking like that only invites people to park up against you making it impossible to open your doors.

they should have put scissor doors on it if parking like that is what they were going for.

oh and mechanically, these things are junk.

So you need surgery to save your life. Sure, you could live longer and experience more things, possibly eliminate a lot of pain from your life and continue being a functioning member of society... but you`d look RIDICULOUS in a hospital gown!

So you want to recycle your trash. Sure, you might be helping out the earth and cutting down on landfills and such, and you might be cleaning up the environment by re-using so many things, but those bins look ridiculous!

We keep it in the back of the truck to use as a spare.

Actually the smart car holds up to being T-boned, since the axles are so close together.

... maybe it could use side-air bags... but maybe it already has those... I`m not the expert.

I got t-boned by an idiot driving a rather tall Dodge Ram. Hit me going about 15 mph. Caved in my jeep`s door and shattered the window. I received no damage other than a really good scare. If I was in that econo box I would have been seriously injured or maybe even dead. I don`t care what some Euro crash rating says. I wouldn`t take that thing around the DC beltway or the M25 for love or money.

It should be able to, unless you`re *really* wide:
It`s all fun until you go head on with anything, the smart cars tend to disintegrate upon impact.
Standard crash tests say otherwise (4/5 Euro NCAP rating). The *bodywork* disintegrates, but the car itself doesn`t. They`ve rammed the things into walls at 40mph, so they`re properly tested and come out surprisingly well.

Unless you hit a tall, heavy vehicle. That won`t end well.

A Smart holds the current fuel economy record for a production car - 99.24mpg. How much are your shekels worth?

They`re not as bad as you`d think in a crash...as long as it`s not with a heavy vehicle with high ground clearance. Hit a wall and you`ll probably be OK. Hit a big USA pickup and it won`t end well.

They can be quite extensively modified. Check this one out:

OK for fuel economy, very bad for tyre economy!

The stock ones are good as an urban car. They`re not ridiculous, they`re just specialised.

I think the debate only applies in the states, where they can`t drive for poo and give 16 year olds Hummers...
If you look at EU stats, Smart cars have the same amount of fatal accidents as any other car.

I drive a small car that`s pretty roomy inside. I like to talk to people that drive big vehicles because they`re always complaining about how much gas they use. I put in $35 every two weeks.
