I`ve seen that too and I don`t think the pilot considered it lightning but a static discharge caused by moving through moist air. I know it seems like it would be the same thing to us, but I suppose saying its just an atmospheric anomaly causes less panic than saying "Oh my God, we`ve been struck by lightning!"

Seen it in person, took almost 5 mins for the pilot to come on and say everything was fine. Long 5 mins

I test aerospace parts for a living - yeah, it`s very common and industry standards that we test every single piece for reliability and lack of degradation from such events. What`s more common (almost constant) is the amount of static charge the plane itself builds up moving through the air.

Lighting striking planes is actually a fairly common occurrence.

and?.... how is this of any importance? happens all the time. i used to work in aerospace defense and it really isn`t as big of a threat as people seem to think it is.
