That`s a good point. Tradition is important.

Although the focus on Zeus and the other gods might not go down well with everyone nowadays. Nor would excluding women from everything other than races (in the original olympic games, all the other events were about combat and ancient Greece didn`t allow female warriors). Come to think of it, it wouldn`t go down well today to have fighting events so dangerous that it was necessary to add a rule stating that if you killed your opponent you lost the fight.

I wonder how many people would compete for the original prize, too - free meals for a year and nobody mattered apart from the winner.

    "They can still afford fire?"

NO! This is the only way to light a fire for free. Here in Greece, after the crisis occurred we all got one of these parabolic mirrors. This, and a chick like those representing the estiades (vestal virgins) you see at the ceremony (which of course are far from virgins) as they know how to light the torch. Usually it takes time but it`s environmentally friendly.

And being England it will piss down with rain every day.

Only at apparently random intervals for apparently random lengths of time. The weather here isn`t as predictable as "piss down with rain every day".

So instead of boring timings like "This event will start at 1500", events will have timings like "This event will start some time between 1400 and 1600, whenever it looks like there will be a bit of time between rain showers". Much more interesting!

We stopped having pagan ceremonies two around thousand years ago. Now, in order to impress a bunch of foreigners (you guys) and achieve self importance in the eyes of the world, and of course to be an integral part of these new and very horrible olympics we resucitate this crap ceremony. Yep. Moving forward in the world.
