@ryan99: look at the map, there`s several places where hispanics and black people are a true majority

Last time I checked Majority = more than 50%...
once the largest group is less than 50% there is no Majority...

The "minority" is everyone who is not white. yes, the "Minority" outweighs the "majority", the white people. But the Black population, the Hispanic population, and Asian population, alone do not outnumber the white population.

I love Louis CK but this is far from him at his best:
What the stat means is 80 percent of New Yorkers are minorities in terms of the US at large.
Also, just because you put a bunch of smaller groups into a big category called "minorities" it doesn`t mean any of those groups isn`t a minority. If I have 2 bananas, one orange, one apple and one pineapple, the bananas are still the largest group.
Speaking of which, you should eat more fruit.

Reminds me of a french comedian, Coluche that died in 86, he said :

"There`s too many foreigners in the world."

haha yeah... I haven`t heard any mexicans in Mexico trying to make a racial distinction based on nationality... maybe racism infects them once they get to the US, the latinos in Vancouver certainly don`t seem like they`re trying to differentiate like that...

I think it`s hilarious that the US Census defines "american" as "hispanic" AND "not-hispanic"
"Latino Americans as a racially diverse ethnicity"
That`s politically correct dribble.
They say that because latinos claim there`s a differance between guatemalans and niceraguans, and both are differant from panamanians. The nationality is differant, but the racial makeup is the same.

It`s like the differance between germans and french. At the end of the day, they`re just white guys.

@freddyferret, you mean like in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and everything on top of Florida? Funny ain`t it? It almost seems like white people are not really the majority everywhere, yet that`s exactly what the joke was saying... ooohhhhh

Nope, that`s your view of a leftist view to the first part, and your veiw of a leftist/racist view to the second.

No, all pooled together 80% of the people belong to some minority. It`s still not a majority because it`s a bunch of small groups. If 80% of the people were Asian or Mexican, THEN it wouldn`t be a minority. But a group of Asians, Mexicans, Russians, Greeks, and whatever else is still a bunch of minorities.

Stupid post is stupid, just like the stupid "comedian" (and I use that word very loosely with him) who made the stupid comments.

this is what it says about the classification of "american", if you`re confused I don`t blame you
The United States Census Bureau also classifies Americans as "Hispanic or Latino" and "Not Hispanic or Latino", which identifies Hispanic and Latino Americans as a racially diverse ethnicity that composes the largest minority group in the nation.
@darkmagic14n I haven`t got the slightest clue, it`s from wikipedia but the graph itself isn`t fully explained.

My best guess is that they`ve been so mixed up for so long it`s hard to tell, making the "race" something different. But that`s a stretch from saying that`s what it is.

@jendrian:

what does your chart mean by "american"? at first I thought native, but then saw there is a separate one for that...

most of the "african" in the south probably qualify just as much as the whites for `american`, same with most of the rest of the country, with southern border, east and west coast having the only coloration

@leesah:

same reason blacks aren`t nigerian, south african, rwandan, etc; and hispanics aren`t mexican, puerto rican, dominican, guatemalan, etc

yes, its a flawed system because, seriously, why does race still matter? if you talk to someone online and you have no idea what race they are, would you feel differently about them if you met them in person?

Here`s a handy chart (from wikipedia, based on the US 2000 Census), as to the purpose of the joke, for those who missed it or argue against it. Sure in general it`s decidedly mostly white, but it`s a white thing to think that`s how it is everywhere.

@auburnjunky let`s see what that smartass has to say in 2050 when white people are projected to comprise less than half of the US population.

"It said 80% were minorities which would inlude black, hispanic, asian, middle eastern, persian, native american, jewish, immigrants, pacific islanders, etc, etc."

If the other 80% is asian, persian, native american, etc why is the 20% not italian, german, british, etc (& how does jewish/immigrants fit in at all? jews can`t be white? immigrants can`t be white?). Why just "white" if you`re going to break everyone else down more specifically. It`s a skewed statistic.

@auburnjunkie; that`s exactly what I mean when I say maybe white people have used segregation irresponsibly in the past, and hence lost the privilege to do it... or at least public tolerance to it.

It`s for example, we still have women`s only stuff, but if you tried to make a men-only gym, it would be called out. That`s because men in the past have abused the privilege of segregation against women.

Again, this is all "maybe", "probably", it`s just what my only intelligent response was to that question yesterday during a stroll. But the more I think about it the more it makes sense.

what part of minorities (plural) does he not understand? So in his opinion they should have been referred to as "majorities"?

In my wife`s ethnic studies class, there was something in her book that troubled her.

It said that no matter the situation, or location, a white person can never be a minority.

Perplexed, she inquired to her professor about it. She basically said the exact opposite of what Louis said.

She said that a white person in a community that was 98% black, is not a minority. Whites can never be a minority in this country.

@Gerry1of1 and CaneTrain, I`m not saying it`s moral, I`m saying privately people get to peacefully marginalize and segregate; publicly, as is the case of the government, there should be no difference.

But privately it`s ok to segregate, you wouldn`t welcome WBC supporters to a gay meeting would you?

My point is that if it seems that only white people are not allowed to segregate anymore, it`s *probably* in response to the irresponsibleness of white people`s ancestors to the "peaceful" part of the tolerance to segregation.

I`m not saying it`s moral, I`m saying it`s tolerated because it`s not wise to let everyone in everywhere.

jendrian -
"white people lost the privilege to segregate."
That implies non-white races do have the right to segregate.

If my prejudice is socially immoral, how can their prejudice be moral? Does the goal of equality not inherantly imply that we all share equal privelage with equal responability? That`s what I believe, but that`s what makes me a racist. So I`m told by Persons of Color, anyway.

@Gerry1of1, I was discussing this with my wife just yesterday: how is it ok for everyone but white people to be racist?

The one answer I could come up with was that maybe it`s not that everyone else is allowed to be racist, but that due to their past behaviour about it white people lost the privilege to segregate.

California, hispanics are the majority now so the state banned the use of the word "minority" in government programs. It`s "persons of color" now so that the majority can get the welfare checks.

"Person of Color" is black, hispanic, asian, native american, ethiopian, mogol, ... anyone but a caucasian so tell me that`s not racist.

100% of people are members of a minority. More accurately, many different minorities. Less than 50% of the population are bald - bald people are a minority. Etc, etc.

In politics, "minority" means "group approved by the authorities for special consideration and treatment". It has nothing at all to do with what the word "minority" actually means, so it could be applied to a situation where 1 person is a "majority" and 999,999,999 people are a "minority".

The way it is phrased yes, saying 80% are minorties could mean there are 20% white 10%/10%/10%/10/%10%/10%/10%/10% in others, so yes that would be correct.

80% is made up of different minorities, with white still being the single largest group.

That would only make sense if the 80% were all one people. It`s didn`t say that 80% were....say black. It said 80% were minorities which would inlude black, hispanic, asian, middle eastern, persian, native american, jewish, immigrants, pacific islanders, etc, etc. While the othe 20% are (presumably) all white americans.

Mmmmmm he may not be right, e.g. if white people make 20% of population, then 19% are black, 18% are Latino etc. and add it up to 100%, then whites could still be a majority. But yeah, kinda stupid.
