Meh, there"s nothing that substitutes for getting yourself messy with finger paints, clay and mud.

ugh...that makes me sad. those kids will not know the joys of opening a book and reading it from cover to cover.

e-readers dont count either. books people. books.

Lolz! @Mantistador: I was about to say: They have to soak each iPad in bleach after each use, and scrub the kids` hands with sanitizer gel...

This will be the future`s equivalent of Oregon Trail on an old-school Apple when we are linked to our computers by our brains.

I bet these are all donated to the school, because there are a bunch of people who have to have the latest model, and it`s better than tossing it out.

CoyoteKing: You realize the older ipad models run around $500 USD, probably less, right? Unless you get a malicious kid who breaks things for the sake of it and is somehow never stopped, you`re not looking at a several year issue.

bassman56: Dude, have *you* ever tried pulling a kid away from something - anything he`s absorbed in? Not pretty! Your only bet is to wave an ipad in front of them one day, finger paint the next.

and then one of the kids dropped an ipad, parents had to buy a new one, process repeats, and kids later on drops out of school to work at mcdonalds to help his now completely broke and in debt family get by

Yeah, because there`s no way they could play with a pad AND the usual fingerpaint, clay and blocks. It`s just not allowed.

Finger painting? There`s an app for that!
(Well, I presume there is. A lot less cleanup after the kids go home.)

Poor kids. They will never know the feeling of spending all morning creating and building the finest edifice of wooden blocks known to mankind and have it completely destroyed by a four foot long wooden tractor trailer propelled by my five year old self in the fashion of getting a running start to slide down a snow hill on a runner sled.

Edgarska - iPads don`t have to be expensive. The low end starts at $400. And considering all I do on my iPad, it`s a bargain. Email, books, games, photos, music... I`m even responding to this on my pad.... Using dictation of course, typing is soooo last century.

@Gerry1of1

Not really though. ipads are incredibly overpriced.

No biggie. Could probably keep kids interested in certain subjects more and saves on chalk and finger paints xP

Sandboxes, clay, finger paints, foam blocks, crayons and chalk still exist in kindergartens. Kid even brought home a macaroni doodle for mothers day today. Imagine that.

khanacademy.org
more stuff

The future is looking pretty bright. Nothing wrong with using tools.

so instead of socializing and being creative, these kids are just becoming yet another group of mindless, technology-addicted drones this world is so full of.....sad :(

San Diego school system is about to spend a million plus dolars on ipads for students while laying off teachers. Kids don`t need this, whatever happened to crayons & chalk?

At least with the ipads though, you do get what you paid for. Can`t say that about teachers.
