Crakrjak: "This is the state quite literally stealing all the money the teachers paid into the pension system and not paying them back out. Then forcing the cost of those pensions onto the local communities with no compensation."

Sounds like what Republican Scott Walker is doing to the teachers in Wisconsin.

Standing in front of a book shelf full of thick books makes me look smart. Even though the books look fake. ;)

As a student attending one of the University of Illinois system`s campuses, I can attest to that story`s claim that the state owes them a good amount of money.

Personally, I`d rather the university cut off ties to the state rather than continue to approve tuition hike after tuition hike for each incoming freshman class.

The state has their hands tied with regards to tuition raises, only allowing them to do it to incoming students while guaranteeing a set rate for upperclassmen for 4 years.

Like other public universities in the US, they`re trying to attract more foreign students who can pay their own tuition.

And they never let us forget that the state owes them money, either.

I`ve been lurking on this site since 2006, but I had to make an account for this occasion as a resident of IL myself.

CrakrJak`s comment on gas stations beginning to refuse the state`s credit cards got me curious, so I did a little digging around on Google and found this: 60 Minutes - "State Budgets: Day of Reckoning"

Illinois is run by Democrat thugs. Bost had worked in good faith to fix the budget problems, but at the last minute, the Democrat speaker completely changed the bill to essentially butt-rape the down-state homeowners so he could pay off the government employee unions in Chicago and Springfield.

I`d be pissed, too.

"THE RULING PARTY changed THEIR bill and were not required to inform me or anyone else from the opposition party"

Comprehension level: 0.

The bill was only just voted on by a committee and was immediately flung onto the floor to be voted on, without giving anyone the chance to actually read the 100+ page bill. He is completely correct, how can we expect him to do his job and vote for his people when no one but the committee knows what`s in the bill? The Dems were just trying to force another vote, VOTE YES ON OUR BILL THEN YOU CAN READ IT!! Our IL Dems are known for this tactic and Rep Bost finally snapped. It`s like the grocery store saying GIVE US $100 THEN WE`LL GIVE YOU THIS BAG OF GROCERIES AND YOU CAN SEE IF YOU GOT WHAT YOU NEEDED.

jamie76: Evidently you don`t know crap about the bill. The bill concerned IL teachers pensions. IL teachers have paid the state for their pensions for a very long time, now the democrats want to dump all the cost of those pensions back onto the local communities.

This is the state quite literally stealing all the money the teachers paid into the pension system and not paying them back out. Then forcing the cost of those pensions onto the local communities with no compensation.

Illinois is screwed over right now, I know I live here. The state is over 6 months behind on it`s bills. It`s so bad gas stations won`t even take the state`s credit cards for gasoline for state vehicles. We were lucky that this last winter wasn`t as harsh as the one before because the state ran out of salt for the roads in January.

I can tell you sir, when it will stop. When the American people tire of the posturing of our elected officials, who take our trust as an invitation to embezzle from the citizenry, while passing increasingly restrictive measures on the public, and allowing corporations to run amuck.

@DrProfessor _ Yeah, that too, good call. What is the deal with that? It`s ironic that they use that phrase so often. Things being shoved down throats, it has such a gay porn vibe to it, no? I really hope it`s not just me that thinks that. But, then again, that`s probably why they are so fond of it. Probably Frank Luntz is responsible.

OK he acted like a jack ass... what about the point he is trying to make with the pensions. I live in CA. where it is even worse. Would someone please explain to me why, if you work for the local, state or Federal Government, I should be responsible for your guaranteed pension as a tax payer.

You know how I knew he was a Republican? He used the phrase "shoved down our throats."

They really love that one. I don`t know why.

How I knew, right away, that he is a Republican: No one stopped him from ranting and flailing around like psychopath. Democratic rant=shut down and condemned. Republican being a lunatic=righteous indignation. The End.

by saying, "the speaker of the house decided to suddenly change the bill at the last minute" what he meant to say was, "THE RULING PARTY changed THEIR bill and were not required to inform me or anyone else from the opposition party but because I am a republican and only like things that are unfair when they are unfair to democrats, I am going to throw a fit over this but when my party was in power we did poo like this all the time and it was totally okay then".

the ruling party was told by the majority of Americans to represent them...the minority party does not represent the majority so they get the poo end of the stick...has always been that way always will be.

oh and btw, listening to a republican AKA the party of being OWNED by big business, talk about voting the will of the people made me nearly spit out my drink.
