If spoons were designed with the sole purpose of killing, his argument would be valid.

Guns are designed to harm flesh (whether human or animal). So the whole "guns don`t kill people, people kill people" argument was always a stupid one, imo.. not that I`m 100% against gun ownership.. I just hate that argument.

Neither extreme really makes sense (although the spoons guy presumably doesn`t mean it and is making a reductio ad absurdum argument).

But while it`s true that guns are tools and therefore don`t do anything themselves(*), they are tools designed solely for the purpose of killing efficiently. So they`re really very unlike spoons. Also, eating is very unlike shooting bullets. For that reason, I think that controls over guns should be more stringent than controls over spoons.

    * I know that there are automated guns, but that`s a tool controlling a tool - the action still rests with a person.

Guns are invented, created and developped just for a reason, to kill. So the idiot argument that say people kill people not guns is invalid. Guns are a tool that allow also the coward and weak to kill. So not only a gun kill but also give more possibility to kill for everyone also for people incapable to fight in a melee combat.

Yup. It is crazy, everything is designed to kill, even things made by nature.

    Alcohol- Poisonous
    Hand Sanitizer- Contains alcohol
    Salt- Causes Heart attacks
Water- Kills people if too much is consumed.
    Drinks- Same thing as water.
Bags- If placed over head they may suffocate you.

It is never ending, I just cannot get away from all of these weapons designed to kill.

OK. I think this is a solid point. Correct me if you disagree.

Spoons are used by people to make THEMSELVES fat. Guns are used by people to kill OTHER people. I have no problem with guns used in suicide.

As far as the people saying everything kills or can be used to kill. Guns and bombs are really the only things capable of taking out a large number of people at once. Nobody is taking out a park full of people or an office building with a knife.

I can also scratch my back, my balls, my face. I can pick my nose. I can melt it down for the metals. I can spin it on my finger. I can practice shooting with it at a shooting range. I can shoot discs. I can drop it on the ground. I can pretend I am a thug. I can dance with it. I can put it in a holster. I can tuck it into my pants. I can put it in a drawer. I can put it in a suitcase. I cannot take it to the airport. I can conceal it if my state allows (and it does).

piperfawn, "Do you want to clean your ear with a gun?"
You could be a hobbyist who does target practice.
You could be a hunter who eats the deer he shot.

With your logic we`d have to ban all kitchen knives because someone was stabbed once. You cannot blame the tool because the user has no brain. For example, I don`t blame 5Cats keyboard for the stuff he says!

Gerry1of1 what i`m tryng to say is that a gun have just one function and is designed for a specific purpose. A kitchen knife is created for cutting food, man can use it also for kill, but is not the reason for what the kitchen knife was created. Guns are created to offend and kill. I`m talking about specific functions of tools. Mans can kill also with naked hands or fap, is a choice given from the versatility of the tool. Honestly i can`t see so many function in a gun if not to kill or destroy. Ohh well i`ve just learned from PhantomGh0st that a gun can be useful also for gardening. C`mon people be honest with yourself.

Sadly, we`re screwed. The culture of guns in this country is way, way worse than the guns themselves.

You can`t change that by banning guns, and you can`t change the way people think with more laws. In fact you just make them more polarized on the issue. About all you can do is nothing, and then hope that everyone mellows the drat out in a couple generations.

That`s my opinion, anyway. But I`ve worked in convenience stores for a significant portion of my life, so I occasionally see guns used in the manner they`re not supposed to be used in polite society.

BUT there`s been plenty of multiple killings with knives, usually less than 10 victems though.
You get groups of people? You can kill a LOT of folks with a band of machette-armed men. Rwanda? Most of the 800,000+ were killed with knives.

@viking I think they should go one better. In order to own a gun you should also have to know its history, as well as of its mechanics and proper maintenance.

I base this opinion on my experiences with bad gun owners. I worked in a convenience store for some years. I still get a little sick to my stomach thinking about all the guns that were in my store, and a couple that were pointed at me, by legal gun owners who didn`t mean me any harm because they didn`t know any better.

Snopes is run by a guy and his wife out of their house, and they`re both liberals. They cannot be trusted for accurate information on ANY issue with a political element. They ALWAYS come down on the side of the left.

For Bigfoot sightings or email hoaxes, they`re fine, but for political stuff, you`ll get nothing from them but liberal spin.

I would say that guns never go off on accident, they go off accidentally due to ignorance. If a loaded gun is just laying around, it will not accidentally discharge. Improper use and handling causes that. Hence the military now using the proper term "negligent discharge" instead of the old term "accidental discharge".

America would be a lot better off without guns, but first you have to fix a lot of things, such as the wealth imbalance and crime culture. There`s a lot of things wrong about America and sadly their arrogance prevents them from looking objectively at the wider problems of their society. This means that America will become more and more violent, even as their civil liberties are quietly stripped by the government. In the past arrogance was balanced, if not justified, by economic dominance, but as the fundamentals that drive their economy are rapidly disappearing, I see the majority of them becoming both poor and ridden with violent crime before they reach a steady state like much of the Old World has become.

Can of worms has already been opened. Fact is, all Americans have guns, if a law was passed to ban them, all the good people would hand them back, all the criminals would still keep them/ get them somehow. So the good people would suffer and become helpless

If we look at this homicide per person chart here...

We can see the top 6 are all places where guns are legal. Jamaica is the highest where guns are illegal at number 7... however they are close enough to places where they are legal, so it is not hard to smuggle.

Russia is the highest outside the gun filled American Continent that is on the list, at place number 24. Russia have legal guns, but not as wide a legal range as America.

The highest murder rate in Europe, where guns are not legal at all, is Estonia. That comes 28th (also the 2nd highest outside of the American Continent).

At place number 34 is the good old USA, the highest A class credit rating country.

And at 41 is Israel! The people you fear for violent tendencies! (I admit, goverment killing is not counted.)

No it isn`t don`t be a retard. Your saying I need a gun to burn your home or steal your car or burglarize a store? I mean there are a lot of crimes that do not involve weapons. Lots and lots. But look at any society where everyone owns a gun. There is far less crime because you don`t want to take the risk of anyone who sees you shooting you before the police arrive and shoot you. Nearly everybody owns a spoon. It is easy to confuse a gun with a spoon. Look at the needless number of alleged gun-in-mouth suicides. Remove guns, suicide rate falls. (fatuous asinine comment not to be taken seriously)

Yeah America would be a lot better off without guns for you non-nice individuals outside the US who would love to see us have less protection.

Most gun crimes are not committed by people who buy guns legally. If they are bought legally they tend to be stolen by you liberal motherdraters.

@Selous: Poverty makes crime? Oh give me a break! Are you saying rich people NEVER commit crimes? Bernie Madoff?

    Greed causes crime, period.
    Followed by drugs & alcohol.
"poverty causes crime" is a liberal fairytale...

@Buiadh: Here in Canada, pistols have been restricted & registered since 1936. Long Rifles were registered by the Liberals a decade or so ago, that law was overturned last year! Hooray!
So for all the BILLIONS of dollars spent by Federal, Provinical and local police & governments, how many crimes were prevented?
    ZERO.
BILLIONS spent and not one good thing to show for it.
The criminals STILL have all the guns they want, but the citizens are defenseless.
All the laws you can imagine do nothing to stop a determined criminal, get it?

It`s easy as pie to get guns form the US to Canada, @5Cats. In the UK we`re an island. Your gun crime is not comparable to ours. It is much much more difficult to get guns here and your average criminal, unless he`s some big shot, doesn`t have access to firearms.

Even those crimes that are commited at gunpoint are uneventfull, a shop owner gets told to fill the bags, they do it. Shop owner lives and, providing they have CCTV which most do, the criminal gets caught. The problem is in America, criminals are on edge because they know so many people have firearms so will be more trigger happy because of it, everyones a potential danger to them.

The US has got itself into this mess, and they cannot go back on it now.

As a neutral, I pity you guys that need guns to "keep safe".

I looked at some stats. Ignoring the countries that America has recently invaded, the biggest shthole in the world is South Africa with 74.5 gun homicides per 100,000 population per year, (no surprises; you`re probably more likely to get shot to death than get run over unless guns are also involved), then comes everywhere that supplies drugs to the US and then the US itself (4.14 homicides, 10.27 total deaths).

North Asia is the safest place for gun crime. They look like a rounding error on US gun crime: Japan 0.02, South Korea 0.04, Hong Kong 0.12 (no stats for China, N Korea and Mongolia) because they are on the other side of the world from America and also don`t sell oil to them.

@Draculya & @Buiadh: So we all agree, it is more CULTURAL than `guns` right? Because Switzerland has assault rifles in nearly every household, and a LOW gun death ratio, right? You saw that on your (un-linked) stats too, @Drac?

Canadian criminals were smuggling & stealing rifles long before the Registration, and continued unabaited by the "law"... Your Island may help slow it, but the crooks can still get guns, correct?

    Think about it...

@Buiadh: I just said that MASSIVE spending on gun laws do ZERO to affect `gun crime` and you call it "spin"? I call it fact.

In Canada: gun use in crimes and murders remained largely unchanged before, during or after "gun registration" was in effect.
Spend those BILLIONS on, say, more cops? More prisons? And ALL CRIME would have been lowered!

A LOT of gun violence and crime in Canada and the USA is gang-related. MOST gangs are race-based. Blacks, Latinos, Asians, Natives, you got plent of those in Scotland, right?
Now WHY those races gravitate towrds violent gangs is a completely different story! We`re dealing with one aspect of that, a side effect...

The only thing that happens when you have strict gun laws is that it makes it harder or lengthens the waiting period for someone to LEGALLY obtain a gun. I live in NY and have a concealed carry permit, it`s a lot of paperwork, background checks, you have to have references, etc and it took a few months for it to be processed. Then, license in hand, I was able to purchase a handgun. You can`t even touch one in a gun store if you don`t have a license, you ask the clerk if you can take a look at one and the first thing they ask is "Can I see your permit?" Same goes for buying pistol ammo, gotta have the permit. However, if I wanted to get my hands on one right away it`s illegal to buy off the street but it`s actually pretty damn easy!

It is not a matter of needing guns to keep safe... it is a matter of if I may need the gun to keep safe.

Rather be safe than sorry. Anybody breaks into my home I would take it as them threatening my family; they will have their head(s) blown off. I will not put my families lives at danger by trying to be honorable and bowing to the person and fist fighting, sword fighting or whatever the hell you feel is a legitimate honorable fight to defend your family from a criminal.

But the other guy would have a gun too. So he would shoot you first and then your family would have no one to protect them. Also, they could get killed by a stray bulled even if no one wanted to kill them. If guns weren`t allowed then at best he would have a knife. He can`t accidentally kill your children with a knife.

Not how it works @Canoas: The criminals all over the world continue to have guns regardless of how many laws are enacted.

The further the gov`t cracks down? The higher the price of black-market guns gets, the more incentive there is to smuggle or steal them.

People who own guns legally should be proud that they`re held to a higher standard than someone who buys off the street. Maybe the standards in place right now aren`t perfect, but I`ve always thought it odd that so many gun owners don`t seem to want SOME policies in place that prove their legitimacy.

I don`t want to take good people`s guns away, I just want to know that you did your homework.
