I hate it on this site when it says [pic] but then it`s a picture of text.
I totally agree that you should be able to take on anyone as a role model, regardless of appearance...however, I think it`s important psychologically for little girls (and boys!) to see someone that looks like them succeeding and it doesn`t hurt to teach your kids about it.
I think it does, because it relies on teaching them that all people of the same sex are basically the same and that all people of the same "race" are basically the same, that sex and "race" are the defining characteristics of a person. That is a required assumption in order to see everyone of the same sex and "race" and only people of the same sex and "race" as being "people like me" or even just "people who look like me". What makes the "looks like me" even sillier is ignoring age. An adult doesn`t look like a young child. Even the same person doesn`t look the same as an adult as they did when they were a young child.

I`d give Michelle Obama props for being a role model. She`s a lawyer in her own right, attended Princeton and Harvard, campaigned tirelessly for her husband and has now taken an active role against childhood obesity in America. The wives of the presidential candidates play a huge role in your public relations and she did an amazing job.

"Why do role-models for African-Americans have to be black? That idea`s just plain racist."

How is Michelle Obama a role model? Any notoriety she has is because she`s married to a half black man...

I`ve no respect for any of those people.. Perhaps some of the early civil rights activists. Good character is a rarity these days, for anyone of any ethnicity
Damnit I`m moving to India

Star is not a role model, she`s obnoxious. I wouldn`t want my kids looking up to her. Mrs. Obama is one, but not Star.

For shame Miss Jones! What a terrible attitude you have towards your fellow woman! To say there are no African American women as role models is ignorant, it`s just a matter of what goals you want to fulfill.

Want money and financial success? Why not emulate Oprah Winfrey`s work ethic?

Wish to be healthier? Why not follow in the steps of Jennifer Hudson who lost weight the smart, healthy way in the face of terrible tragedy?

Wish to help change the world? model yourself after Maya Angelou or Michelle Obama.

tsk tsk Star...disappoint.

"I`m more interested in why some people only want role models with some quite arbitrary things in common with them. "

That`s why Superman is my role model; we both come from the same planet.

Why are blacks so hung up on being, well... black. Can`t a person just have a "role model"? Does this mean I can`t consider Bill Cosby a role model?

Rubbish.

What the hell has Michelle Obama ever done, besides make television appearances on Nickelodeon?

I saw a speech she gave to a private female school in England and basically said that her greatest accomplishment was her husband being elected as president.

Really? What the hell does her husband`s accomplishments have to do with her?

Leave it to Mr. Blonde to preach the virtues of female African-American role models. And apparently Mr. Blonde is a chubby chaser.

I`m more interested in why some people only want role models with some quite arbitrary things in common with them.

Should I only consider people as potential role models if they`re the same sex as me? If they have a similar amount of suntan? If they`re from the same country? Why?

I second @Rick_S and @SethDog: Condi Rice!

Star Jones is a D-list has-been, who cares what she thinks?
