Google self-driving cars just got their official state license plates and are road-ready now. I-A-B, good idea or bad?

@Gerry1: I think the point is that it HAS been extensively tested in `closed` conditions. Now they need to test it in real life so they can move it`s progress towards legalization.

@SpermNinja and @type55, no not yet! You have to be able to `takeover` if things go wrong, eh? Someday though, I can easily see it.

There has to be 2 people in the self-driving car? Odd.
It`s a start! Someday all the cars and aircraft will be guided by SkyNet! Only good can come from that, right?

As much as I love driving, I am willing to sacrifice it if lives are saved in the end. Besides with everything being charted out by computers, theoretically things would run at their most efficient.
Does everyone other than me hate driving that much?
the only part of driving I hate is the other drivers

plus they`re not making everyone get autonomous cars, not yet anyways

other than the LIDAR, ths is no different than what I proposed 10 years ago when GPS was getting so popular, unfortunately I didn`t have the means to make a prototype.

this car will cut down on the amount of traffic stops (as well as accidents caused by human error), and will either reduce the police force (bad only if you`re thinking `unemployment rate`; great in terms of tax relief), or have them focus on REAL criminals

They`ve already done 100,000`s of miles of testing on real streets anyway, search youtube for google car and you`ll see some examples, including cruising on the freeway, round suburbs and a very high speed precision example in a closed car park.

Tell that to all the kids who are killed by drunk drivers. I am 100% for autonomous cars.

I`m all for it...after it`s perfected.
I love a road trip but driving means you sit in the same position too long. I like to look out. Read book in the boring parts. This kind of car will be great. I`m just not sold the technology is there.

FYI: Computers take off and land almost all the jets in the USA. They do it better than people and I`m okay with that. The pilot is there to take over "in case". But cars...? With other cars jumping in front of you and those damn people on bicycles? I`m not sold on this.

I don`t care how much testing they do, computers crash for no reason all the bloody time. It takes one tiny messed up line of code for something to go horribly wrong.

Just think about the first update that has a flaw, and they all crash at the same time, so something similar.

does anyone realize that this will completely ruin the whole driving experience. First we go from manual cars to automatic and now to cars that drive themselves? Does everyone other than me hate driving that much?

"They needed the plates and license from the state officially before they could do live on-road testing,"

They don`t need to be tested on the streets. That`s like testing a new bicycle safety helmet by crashing your kid into a wall. "Factory Testing". There are huge test courses they can use.

"But I`m not trusting these yet. Needs more testing."

They needed the plates and license from the state officially before they could do live on-road testing, they`re not for sale yet, just getting super close. I read in a different article that the state instructor giving the test was pretty impressed, and seeing as how it passed... I`m excited to see what the full features are.

It`ll be a while before I try one. I`m a bit sketchy about sharing the road with them either as they are so new. Time will tell. I see a major problem though with people running into them. They will be instant prime suspect and so progress will be slow.

Lemme check the calendar.... nope, not April 1st. In that case, there`s no explanation for this.

I`m looking forward to a self-driving car.
But I`m not trusting these yet. Needs more testing.
