People do realize that the Republican party`s older socially conservative members are slowly dying off and it will soon be run by intellectuals who actually manage to understand economics that also happen to be pretty socially liberal for the most part, right?

I would like to believe that but the GOP has moved more and more to the right over the last 20 years or so.

30 years ago they were not as extreme and had members from middle of the road to slighty left leaning on certain issues.

santorum is a new breed of republican and he is not old. he represents a completely misguided and hateful direction that the party is going in.

    Let me give an example.

Bush wants to drill on our soil to help alleviate gas prices.

Liberal response is to criticize Bush on how stupid he is and how terrible of an idea that is.

Obama decides he wants to say he wants to drill on our soil to help alleviate gas prices.

Liberal response is oh yeah Obama is the man! Drill on our own soil... why could nobody else think of this?

Bush had this country going in a great direction. Then you friggin` libs took over congress and everything that would help the country would no longer be passed through liberal congress. Obama had liberal congress and yet... nothing good came out of it... pretty pathetic.

Still a minority, just because they hijacked our media coverage doesn`t mean they hijacked our votes. & though horribly misguided, they do mean well and have ideas at least based in logical thought. They just need the "controversy" to wear off a little before they collectively settle down and get serious.

Where`d all this "Gays don`t pay taxes" bullpoo come from??? Do people actually believe this? One of the biggest (non-civil rights related) contentions amongst the gay community pertaining to same sex marriage/civil unions is that they DO NOT qualify for the tax breaks afforded to male/female married couples. anything, gay males, per household, contribute MORE to taxes in general solely due to the sociological fact that males, on average, make more than females (and please don`t jump down my throat for saying so, I don`t agree with it, that`s just the unfortunate state of things atm).
And for all of the other `LIBs` here, Republican tax philosophy isn`t about giving tax breaks to the `rich`, it`s about decreasing federal spending AND lowering taxation to increase private spending. Sorry if you think that philosophy`s flawed, but it worked out pretty well for JFK (and guess what his political affiliation was...) Don`t be wrong just for the sake of being different.

    5Cats:

    1. It does work just fine for you. But other people just want it to work fine for them. What is the difference if we call it a civil union or a marriage? Isn`t that semantics?

    2. It would never force a church to do anything. Church marriage is a meaningless ceremony, I`m talking about legal marriage. The state can`t regulate what churches do. Some churches won`t let you get married now unless you convert.

    3. Do you really not think comparing gay sex to pedophilia is insulting? Gay sex is an act between two consenting individuals zoophilia and pedophilia are not. As far as polyagmy and incest go, I really don`t see how those are anybody`s business either.

    4. Aren`t you intelligent and self aware enough to realize that your opinion is just your opinion and that forcing other to live by your opinion when their lives don`t in any way affect you is wrong?

But I realize that just because I don`t like what two people do I don`t have the right to tell them they can`t do it. Imagine if 90% of the world was gay and the people in power were gay and they told you that you were wrong for being straight. Wouldn`t that bother you? I just don`t get why you or anyone else cares. It doesn`t affect you in any way.

Let the LGBT community have their marriages. You can`t make WBC etc perform ceremonies for them and I don`t think they`d go to a hostile church. They`d pick a church that welcomed them. But to call it a civil union, to deny a civil union, or deny them common law status and benefits as befitting a proper marriage, that demeans them as humans and demeans the concept of marriage and undermines the community. I find any counter argument based on religious law to be absurd because there is no god and anyone that says they`re grossed out... that`s their problem ans they should keep their opinions to themselves - it`s irrelevant to society as a whole.

All participants of polygamous marriages also need protection under law.

Forced marriages should be banned and marriages with either participant under 18 should be deferred till both parties are of age, though common law protections should be given in both cases.

And while we`re at it, we should abolish all tax breaks to religious institutions and make it a requirement that non-profit institutions demonstrate that a reasonable proportion of income goes to actual charitable causes.

CrakrJak - Nope. I had the taxes checked. And I had more the the $1600, also cashed in a 401K and sold my motorcycle.

Duductions are for people who have money. You have to have X amount to get them. To write off something to charity it has to be at least $2k ... so if you gave $1500 well that`s not enough to write it off...no deduction. My kids grown, no deduction. Officially I`m not married, even though I am, yet I earned too much to be claimed as a dependant on his taxes. {$1500 is the cut-off to be a dependant, can you believe that}. I am not a mother-returning-to-school , an injured vet , nor do I have an illness expense .

The point is the poor do pay taxes. The only way to not pay tax is if you are on welfare, which I have never been. Point is, I didn`t pay much in tax, but it was 30% of my pathetic income last year.

    The POOR DO PAY TAX

The better point is why do I pay taxes for liberals to sit at home sit on IAB to bitch, whine and cry about taxes, while collecting their food stamps, unemployment checks, and welfare checks where they can live better than most hardworking Americans making 30-60k a year. Why do I pay taxes so your poor family can live in a house or apartment that charges $1800 or more rent.

Why do I pay taxes for you poor liberal criminals without money to live in better luxury in prison than you would as a free man.

So you think it is fair that I pay ~$20k in taxes ~$15k to federal and ~5k to state when I make $85k a year?

And you make your 20k and pay maybe 2k? How is that fair?

I pay nearly 1/4th my wages in taxes and you pay 1/10.

The difference, Phant0m, is you can still fracking survive off your 3/4th income, whereas a poor person could not survive by giving a 4th of their income to the government. Just because you`re crying UNFAIR UNFAIR UNFAIR, doesn`t make it any more fair to force a person to live well below the poverty line.

Christianity and fiscal conservatism shouldn`t logically go together, eh? Jesus would look at people like Mitt Romney and be appalled.

That argument does not work for me.

I am 22 now. When I was in college (yes during high unemployment rates) I worked 1 job... it was not enough. I applied to every possible job I could. I found another job. I didn`t quit my original job, I added on another.

I worked 2 FT jobs and FT school, sleeping under 2 hours a night M-F and upwards of 5 hours a night on weekends. Yes, I did that by choice, but I worked very hard to make a wage that was appropriate for my well being.

Can you say you do the same if you are one in that low income situation? Would you, already having the ability to just stay living with your parents decide you want to be independent and go 3 years having minimal social life outside of work and school?
Apparently if you are complaining about your financial situation you are not. My suggestion, instead of bitching about it on the internet, go look for a job.

@PhantomGh0st - I don`t believe your bullpoo, but on the offchance it`s true, 2 hours a night? You`re an idiot. I`d rather be poor and not risk my life.

"most all low income people don`t"
I am a `low income people` and yes, we do. That`s what I`ve been saying. But the media has you convinced poor people don`t. You`ve heard them say it so many times you think it`s fact...but alas, it is not. Deductions are there, but they must add up to a minimum number, which the poor can`t afford.

Children are about the only deduction and that`s the one I don`t agree with. Just because you are stupid enough to have kids you can`t afford why should you pay less tax than someone smart enough to use a condom?

@Gerry1: I know the poor pay taxes, and hugely unfair ones at that!
Gas tax, booze tax, smokes tax, SALES tax (the worst offender!) ALL disproportionatly tax THE POOR.
And what do liberals want? MORE gas tax, MORE sales tax & etc.
I`m talking Federal Income Tax and yes, `rich` people pay more money at a higher rate than the `poor`. To cut taxes on the bottom 30% you`d have to send them money!

Why is the recession not as bad in Canada? Because the CONSERVATIVE Government cut the sales tax 2%! That`s more money in the pockets of the poor.

    HolyGod: 1 - did I say `no civil unions`? Nope.
2 - And Obama would never force the Catholic Church to fund abortions! LOLZ!!! NEXT!
3 - I never compared that group, I`m saying once you open the door, you never know what might come through it.
    4 & 5: Um, ok?
Gays get married in Canada now, it`s no big deal. Soon polygamists will too, then incest will surely follow.

I don`t care if you believe it or not. I guess you would rather see your children, your family, and yourself starve and/or suffer? I guess that strive is the difference between us then. I know what I want in life, and that is what I work towards.

Yeah, give it a try, you will amaze yourself at what you are capable of doing when you put efforts towards it. I definitely wanted to call it quits my first few weeks, but as time passed it just became routine for me.

I never said I enjoyed it. And I not once felt like I risked my life. I did use a lot of 5 hr energy, whether it works or not or if it is just the mentality it works well enough.

The ability to deny fact astounds me.
I used to believe the myth that the poor didn`t pay tax, but now that I am poor I can tell you for a fact they do. Yet despite a 1st hand, eye witness account, All of you Expertards still insist the poor {ME} don`t pay. My taxes, total, were 30% of my meager income. That is double the percentage Warren Buffet says he pays.

Oh, but what do I know. Afterall, if FOX News says the poor don`t pay taxes, why it must be so!

    5Cats

you know how you can tell when 5cats has been defeated?

he resorts to using insults and threatens to ignore the person.

Also, again my dear mentally challenged 5Cats, I never said I was a libertarian, I said I support Ron Paul.

you say I don`t agree with anything republicans say, for the most part you are correct. I agree with what Ron Paul says, which republicans don`t agree with...at all.

my comment to you about ignoring info that would damage your world view was merely presented in this thread, but really, it stands to reason that the comment was meant to encompass your life in general.

the real problem with you 5Cats is not that you are republican, it is that YOU AGREE with everything they tell you without question.

you can hardly say that you do not believe everything you read when you are constantly and observably on the republican side on every political or even semi-political issue that graces IAB.

WOW! @Jamie can read my mind! He knows things I didn`t even know myself!
OR @jamie there`s no need to bash Repubs here at IAB when there`s scores of libtards who do it every day!

OOo, it offends you that I disagree with your rose-coloured world view? Too bad!

Insults? At IAB? OOOO! BANHAMMER ME NOW! No one has EVEN stooped so low as... to...

    "my dear mentally challenged 5Cats"

    Hi @mat_junkie: Welcome to IAB!
Of course I`m discussing US Federal Taxes. NO ONE, even us Canadians, cares about Canada`s tax situation! lolz!

And I have every reason to keep a close eye on our souther neighbors, 600 pound gorillas, eh?

I never said you shouldn`t call me names...I was merely pointing out how frustrated you were by what I wrote...so much so that you resorted to name calling and threats to ignore me.

I cannot claim to have ESP but I can Claim to have never once observed you ever take sides against anything a republican has said here, post or otherwise and I have been hanging round here for a few years now.

Also, for all your bluster and comments about ESP, which of course are meant sarcastically, you did not once deny anything that I said nor refute it.

you, it would seem, would rather argue distractions then actually confront the issue, which is fine so long as you understand that it merely makes you look the part of the closed minded conservative that cannot accept anyone else`s world view that differs from you. On that note, you cannot accept that there are more than two political schools of thought.

you must not have interacted with 5cats very often. He feels expert enough about most any issue to tell you

    A. what it means
    B. why his view of it is correct
    C. why yours is and always will be wrong
    D. will call you a "lib-tard" when you disagree
    with him.

it does not matter that it has nothing to do with his country, real or imagine, the fact that it is posted here is invitation enough for him to tell you all about it and why you suck at thinking, having an opinion or otherwise be capable of saying anything that makes sense.

this is of course why dozens of people routinely run counter arguments to anything he says.

    American politics are a joke.

I will agree with you on that. However, I have heard some of the statements made by your current government and have to say, they don`t sound all that enlightened themselves...at least not your current ruling party.

Why bother @Jamie? I`ve denied, refuted AND proven beyond a doubt before, but YOUR opinion remained unchanged. Why waste my time protesting my innocence when your `jury slip` already reads "Guilty!"
I have indeed disagreed with every member here at one point or another. I`ve said many times that various Repubs and their policies were crappy. I don`t go on and on about it because the libtards have that covered.
You`ve never seen it? Too bad! Are you a stalker, watching ever single post I make? No? Good!

it has nothing to do with his country,
SEE? You prove my point FOR ME! I explain it, but NOOOO I`m still "wrong". I don`t have to "prove" anything, yet you chortle over ever imagined fault?

You claim to work in the mental health field? Huh.

I`ve never heard anyone in that field (or any related to it) display such utter disregard for propriety, decency or the opinions of others as you.
Bigotry, name calling, paranoia, hypocricy, ignorence, I see that!

A mental health worker using derogatory terms based on mental illness? Unconsionable! Indefensable!

If you`re in the "mental health" field you`re either a janitor or a file clerk. Perhaps you`re an inmate (or outpatient) from the Asylum?

I don`t know and I care even less.
I dislike your abusive behaviour and shall now take proper actions to deal with it.

I hope you get your crap sorted out @jamie, but sort it out without me.

    Goodbye!
