just because you are an atheist doesnt mean you necessarily mean you believe in evolution...

Atheism = no beliefs in any God whatsoever.

for all Atheists care they could just use the argument "poo happens" and thats good enough for them.

I dont understand how you cant believe in evolution. Vestigial structures are the best proof that we evolved from something else. In humans, the tailbone is a vestigial structure, because (and i`m still pissed at this) we dont have tails anymore.

I`m glad we don`t have tails anymore.
Guys would all be obsessed if their tail is big enough.
Girls would be all worried "Does my tail look fat in this?"
And bullies would always be pulling our tails and poo like that.

No, the ignorance is you, since this anecdote never once mentions that this is how all christians think, so that`s you labelling them all as such. Also, it`s not easy to post all anecdotes on this forum, so snapshots is all we get.

Have you ever been in a Catholic school science class? Fascinating, from a complete bs point of view. First day of class, "evolution is Satan worshiping, now let me show you all the catastrophe`s god put on earth to kill us all, like this Super-volcano!" A whole semester of freak natural disasters caused by god to spite humans. But nahhh, these people are the minority! That`s why they`re teaching high school science!

Have you ever been in a Catholic school science class? Fascinating, from a complete bs point of view.

I was raised a Catholic, went to Catholic school, and practiced that faith for 30 years before finding that there was more evidence for there not being a God than there is for there being one, and abandoning my faith.

That said, I`ve never been taught not to believe in evolution. Of all the things I can think of to validly criticise Catholicism for, teaching that the theory of evolution isn`t real isn`t one of them.

Many atheists are certain Zues, Thor, Odin and all the other gods man has made up including the Abrahamic gods do not exist, but they leave open the small possibility that a deistic god could exist and we do not have knowledge of it, and because it is unknowable there is no reason to act like it does exist.

No, the definition of athiesm is the belief that god does not exist. It does not allow for even the possibility of a god. That`s the definition. If you don`t believe in god but don`t deny the possibility that`s something else, either agnosticism or something related.

    `Atheism` from dictionary.com

    noun
    1. the doctrine or belief that there is no God.
    2. disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.

A belief is not a claim of knowledge, atheism and theism refer to belief... not to knowledge.

@Buaidh: idk if he`s really a Bot, but it seems like there`s several Bots that the Mods all use to post stuff.
Or perhaps each has his/her own Bot? That would explain that "johnny" guy`s ghod-awful posts, remeber that short-lived phase?

A particular Mod recently posted that "no one liked my description" for a Bot`s posting... hummmm.

But I don`t blame them! There`s lots of content every day, even if half of it is crappy, the Bots make it LOOK like there`s several people choosing the posts.

@eugenics has like 1300+ threads now, THOUSAND! and 90% of them suck! Either he pays IAB to put them up (it`s an option!) OR he`s a bot.

Fair Question @Otto and I`m happy to chat about it!

As a Deist, I believe in God who created the universe. I`m quite certain the universe isn`t "an accident". God made the `big bang` and set the wheels in motion. OR He made the universe 6,000 years ago, but it LOOKS like it`s billions of years old! (note: Not Bloody Likely)

It could be that "God" is more than one Being. That`s what seperates Deists from Theists: we make no claim as to who God is, other than the Creator. We also don`t believe God has orders for us to follow.
All Holy Books are written by Men. Even if God inspired them, Men have re-written and translated them for centuries. Thus Deists view them all as "possibly good guides for people to follow".
Other Deists may disagree, we`re even less organized that Atheists!

No, the definition of athiesm is the belief that god does not exist. It does not allow for even the possibility of a god. That`s the definition.

The definition of `elephant` is a small bird. It does not all for even the possiblilty of an elephant being large or a land animal. That`s the definition.

Just like you, I can claim any definition I like for any word.

Just like you, I`d be talking rubbish.

The difference is that I know that my definition of "elephant" is rubbish and I was only pretending in order to make a point.

I`m getting really sick of people who have no idea what they`re talking about trying to tell atheists what atheism is, even though their redefinition of the word completely ignores a viewpoint many people have and leaves it without any word to describe it.

If you don`t believe in god but don`t deny the possibility that`s something else, either agnosticism or something related.

If you don`t believe in any gods, that`s atheism regardless of what you do or don`t think is a possibility.

Agnosticism is not a third position on belief in gods. Agnosticism isn`t about belief. It`s about knowledge (from the Greek compound word agnosis, meaning `without knowledge). Specifically, agnosticism is the idea that a person shouldn`t claim something as objective truth unless they can objectively prove it.

    (a)theism is about belief.
    (a)gnosticism is about knowledge.

They`re not different positions on the same thing. They`re positions on different things. There are gnostic theists, agnostic theists, gnostic atheists and agnostic atheists.

LOL, "Agnostic Atheists".. really? One is either atheist or not, there are NO agnostic atheist. Someone can`t NOT believe in a god while at the same time think maybe there might be one. People like you are what`s keeping religion alive... you have no clue.

So there are four possible ways one could be.

    1. Agnostic-Theist: believes god exists, but the existence of a god is unknowable
    2. Gnostic-Theist: believes in a god for which he claims knowledge
    3. Agnostic-Atheist: does not believe god exists, but it can`t be proved
    4. Gnostic-Atheist: believes it can be proved that god does not exist

Case 3 is sometimes referred to as "weak atheism" and case 4 is sometimes referred to as "strong atheism". Only strong atheism positively asserts that there are no gods.

Finally, it should be pointed out that when a person is asked about their beliefs and replies that they are agnostic, they are avoiding the question and answering a different one. Someone who can`t positively say he/she believes in a god is an atheist.

It has to do with the difference between what you believe and what you think you know. For any particular god that you can imagine, a "theist" is one who has a belief in that god. In contrast, an "atheist" is one who does not have a belief in the god. A "gnostic" is one who knows about the existence of god and an "agnostic" is one who thinks that god is unknowable.

Notice that the terms "atheist" and "agnostic", by these definitions, are not mutually exclusive. You could be an agnostic atheist, meaning you don`t think that the existence of gods is knowable, but you don`t choose to believe in one without further proof. Many people assume that atheists believe that gods can be proved not to exist, but this isn`t strictly true and there is no proper word to describe this. You could call such a person an "untheist", perhaps. Or, you could just call such a person a "gnostic atheist", one who doesn`t be

    Oldollie,

Beliefs are extremely important and this idea that all beliefs should be equally respected is rediculous. Beliefs inform our actions and our actions affect everyone. We have politicians who believe god will only destroy the world when `he` his ready and therefore we don`t need to worry about environmental issues, I don`t care which side of the environment debate anyone is on this is a terrible `reason` for inaction. Our former president said the jury was still out when it comes to evolution and cut science funding. Our country is falling behind the rest of the world in science and much of that has to do with religious beliefs.

AND Agnostic Theists & Agnostic Atheists both believe the same damn thing.
What? They believe diametrically opposite things, you doofus. One believes in God, the other doesn`t.

@Angilion you`re just being goofy now. Link to a dictionary, show me a paper dictionary, or grow up. Your choice.

You have been providing links to dictionary definitions THAT STATE THE SAME DEFINITION I HAVE BEEN GIVING.

Your own links contradict what you`re saying. You`re demanding that I provide links showing the definition that the links you`ve given state. If you don`t read and understand the links you provide yourself, why would you read and understand any I give that say the same thing?

Also, I have already provided several such links. Of course, you didn`t read and understand them.

I have explained an extremely simple situation in laborious detail. Repeatedly. Two independent variables, each with two possible values - 4 possible outcomes.

If you`re trolling, then well done. You are irritating.

If you`re serious, then oh dear.

LOL, "Agnostic Atheists".. really? One is either atheist or not, there are NO agnostic atheist. Someone can`t NOT believe in a god while at the same time think maybe there might be one. People like you are what`s keeping religion alive... you have no clue.

I was going to explain this very simple thing once again. 2 variables, each with two possible values = 4 possible outcomes. It`s not rocket science. Objective proof and faith are not the same thing. It`s not rocket science.

Then I realised something. If you were as dumb as you`re pretending to be, you wouldn`t be able to write. So you must be trolling.

AND Agnostic Theists & Agnostic Atheists both believe the same damn thing. We`ve been over this already, you still haven`t proven me wrong, while I`ve backed my statements up! AND links meant to disprove me have ALSO backed me up!

You are either lying, trolling or deluded and hallucinating.

You have not backed your statements up. How, for example, could you back up your assertion (which I`ve quoted above) that an atheist and a theist believe the same thing? That`s your entire argument and it`s ludicrous.

Your own links have proved you wrong because they`ve been to dictionaries that give the correct definition of `atheist` and not the meaning you claim the word has.

I`ve proved you wrong repeatedly, which isn`t saying much. In order to "support" your position, you`re having to claim that an atheist and a theist believe the same thing. It`s not hard to prove that sort of thing wrong.

I notice that Otto67 has given a succinct explanation, in posts dated and timed at

    Friday, April 20, 2012 9:40:47 PM

    and

    Friday, April 20, 2012 9:41:03 PM

While we carry on insulting each other, would you try getting a grown-up to explain those two very short, very simple posts to you? Or, even more simply, find one to explain to you the difference between faith and knowledge or between faith and objective proof. Don`t bother with a dictionary - you`ve already proved that you can`t understand the definitions by yourself, by posting links that give different definitions to what you think they give.

I`m assuming you`re trolling, so I`m just insulting you for entertainment, trolling the troll. And now I`m bored of that.
