Kubrick is an existentialist? That explains a lot.

why does life have to have a higher purpose. For me, life`s purpose is simply to enjoy myself and experience as much of the world as possible...

Grim? I`d say "honest".

It`s easier to believe that an undetectable higher power has a purpose for us, but that`s just a reassuring story.

"Who cares about the meaning of life? Just try to enjoy it from time to time, because who knows how long it will last?"

That`s the spirit! Let the next gen deal with our good times. Nothing lasts forever. Drive it into the dirt like it meant nothing to anybody.

BTW, Kubrick was an audio/visual genius. It would be great if he was around making art. He is a rare human treasure.

I think that sounds a lot like nihilism: the belief that not a damn thing matters, good or bad. Although the idea of creating a purpose of our own is unique.

Seems like a sensible man to me and it also highlights the reason why people turn to religion .. fear of death. It really is that simple. Don`t even try to deny it.

We need to feel important and have a purpose otherwise we are nothing with no goal.

That isn`t grim. It only seems grim if you do not know at all what he is talking about.
