robosnitz: Those are likely gray tree squirrels, they can be mean, avoid them.

Fox squirrels (the red ones) are usually much milder in temperament, they are more common in the country, rare in urban areas.

They look exactly like tree squirrels on the east coast.Never seen them burrow like that before. Weird.Here in the projects in Troy,NY, they jump out of trees and attack stray cats and very small children.You can walk right by them and they stand their ground like a boss.

P.S.: David Attenborough got one detail wrong. We eat snakeskins `cuz they are just so darned tasty! And *every* well-bred squirrel knows to use his or her tail as a napkin.
