my god what a bunch of emo monkeys... rule 1) when you cross the line between protestor and unruly mob you get hit with a baton and pepper sprayed rule 2) you`re protesting... you`re not in Iraq or Afghanistan... screaming "medic, medic medic" is kind of dumb... rule 3) having someone get "injured" off screen, then dragging them across the camera screaming "medic"... well, a little composed isn`t it??

I blame video games. I somewhat remember when Doom was being blamed for Columbine (I think it was Doom) and at the time, I thought it was ridiculous anyone could claim violent video games lead to real world violence. I still do. That said, the level of fantasy these kids put themselves in where yelling "Medic" is either going to get some sort of result or is meant to humor the guy yelling it, it`s just not normal. It`s as if these guys are living in a perpetual fantasy land where there are no repercussions to there actions, be it jumping on a grenade in Medal of Honor or rioting after a football game.

Love to talk to one of these guys saying "we won." I mean, is he just there to amuse himself spouting nonsense cause that`s what he does on the internet/xbox/facebook or does he really think his peers (Not him of course, that would be annoying) eating pepper spray means they got some real world score.

Hedkwab: In California, College tuition used to be FREE. An educated workforce is the best possible thing for any economy. It seems like the administrators and people who print text books are the only ones profiting by raising school costs, cutting admissions, and out dating textbooks every semester. Shame on you for thinking they`re spoiled. When did wanting an education, and to not be swimming in $100,000 in debt by the time they`re 25, become a bad thing?

While I agree that college and university tuitions are out of control and much too high, becoming an unruly mob and trying to force your way into a meeting room, that`s not big enough to handle that size of crowd, is idiotic and dangerous.

Chanting for `free education` is dumb too, let`s be realistic, it does cost money to provide education. If they raise your tuition use the marketplace to your advantage and transfer to a college or university with lower tuition.

Ask yourself this, would you protest outside a gas station with the highest price per gallon or would you drive a few miles away and get your gas cheaper at another station ?

Higher education is rediculously expensive. The days of `working your way through college` are long past.If the trend continues, higher education will be something for the rich only, as it was 100 years ago.

    US is doomed.

The kids may be idiots, but it`s largely conservative business practices that reduce education funding and subsidies to the point that universities need to be `self-sufficient` and raise tuitions/cut programs in order to function.

What a load of liberal clap-trap. You can`t blame businesses for tuition. It`s not a business`s resposability to fund schools.

But you can start with blaming a failed school administration that can go through money faster than jewish american princess at Bloomingdales sale. The schools now have rediculously expensive politically correct programs. They have spend the same on girls sports as boys even though no one is interested, not even the girls. They have to have Mental Health Counseling. And there`s a wealth of stupid subjects where Professors teach courses in Harry Potter, Star Wars and yes, even my beloved Star Trek falls under the knife here. {I love it but you just can`t major in Warp Core Theory}.

Yeah, but in this case prices are going up everywhere. No thanks in what Gerry mentioned. Then again the question wouldn`t be how many blocks, rather how many state lines you`d be willing to cross.

Of course these students are directing their anger at the wrong people.

I have to say, I can understand where they`re coming from, even if their methods aren`t the greatest. (If there`s not enough room, you can`t fit, and that`s that.) The people who sell these textbooks, at the very least, should NOT be charging this much. I understand that they need to make a profit, but I shouldn`t be paying upwards of $100 PER BOOK. Yes, I can sell it back (well, sometimes), but that`s still about $50 for one book. One USED book. Taking five classes, some with multiple books? It`s insanity. They know they can charge these prices because it`s not a matter of just choosing not to buy it. You NEED these things for class, and they don`t give a rat`s bum if you have to sell your soul to pay for them. Yes, you could choose NOT to go to college, but in this day and age, where everyone insists on getting a higher education, you`d better hope that none of the people you`re competing with (even for jobs where they aren`t even required) have degrees.

Colleges shouldn`t run out of money. Period. The one I attend, charges 100 dollars,PER semester, a student for parking, that isn`t even guaranteed. Times that by, oh, let`s say 30,000 students. That means, this ONE school is banking 3,000,000. Now where does that go? Certainly not to improving the parking lots, or making more room to park. Book costs are astronomical! There was this one math class I took, and the book was 120.00 dollars. AND IT WASN`T EVEN BOUND!!! It was all loose papers, that one had to buy a separate binder to keep it. *Shakes head* Someone is making a lot of money off of students.

There isn`t a large market for college text books, but the seller are fortunate in that the students who have to buy them don`t have many choices. It`s really a seller`s market- with low competition and a high dependency from the consumer for their books. That`s why they can get away with selling a 300 pg book for upwards of 150$. Worse yet is the mark up on electronic versions.

ManaSama, for one of my physics classes, I had to spend approximately $1 per page for the lab. It was literally ~50 pages stapled together with a slightly thicker piece of paper for a cover. We had no way to get it but through the school, we couldn`t get it used, couldn`t photocopy it or anything.

Thankfully, future classes switched to lab instructions where we were allowed to print them up ourselves :|

And my school charges $44 for a parking pass per semester x_x My brother`s school gives parking passes for free ._.

@Gerry: perhaps I gave you the wrong intention, I wasn`t saying businesses should fund schools, rather, that conservative governments turn universities INTO businesses. At least up here, they cut funding and subsidies forcing unis to cut programs and raise tuition.

Total BS. 1st, in order to have "conservative business practices," you have to have conservatives of which there are exactly NONE on most campi. 2nd, schools charge the highest price the traffic will bear. Whatever the govt. kicks in just gets added to the price. If you`re willing to pay $400/hr, and the govt. subsidy is $200/hr, they`ll raise the price to $600/hr. because they already KNOW you`re willing to pay $400/hr. And where does that money go? Well, right now Harvard is sitting on over $32 BILLION.

But that wasn`t my point. It`s that these stupid kids are products of a crap liberal education system that taught them to think like this. The retarded chickens are coming home to roost.

@ patchgrabber - I get your gist. And yes, it is possible that schools are going the way of hospitals. They used to non-profit but now they are all For-Profit businesses. When that happened health costs skyrocketed. I have seen an increase in Private Colleges and Schools such as DeVry and Phoenex. Perhaps they too are becoming For-Profit.

Bottom line is the same... college is becoming something for the rich.

And as I said, I`m doubt if our uni`s and government relationship is the same as yours, but for instance: My laboratory building is on a university campus. This uni just had $40 million dollars cut from it from government subsidies/grants/etc. Now they have to make up the difference, which will mean cut programs, likely to the liberal arts since they bring in no money (if they have to cut something I`m glad it`s that at least), and will also raise tuition. It`s not like they just have $40 million in some slush fund while they let the government pay all the bills.

@PG, you have a point. The fact that conservatives have been effectively purged from the ranks of academia means they never will be able to manage colleges like a business nor will they turn out graduates with a grasp of the real world. Case in point, Barack Obama learned constitutional law from liberal Harvard professors who state openly that they have contempt for the constitution. That`s explains why he demonstrated such breathtaking ignorance of it this week.

The price of a college degree these days does not reflect the value of the knowledge gained but rather its value as a credential. Companies now use degrees as proxies for IQ tests which they are now barred from giving to prospective employees. The degree proves that you were at least smart enough and hard-working enough to make it through.

However, if you wasted your time and money getting a degree in Pissed-off Feminism or Victimized Minority Studies, you`ll be flippin` burgers.
