I`ve been to France many times. The only rude people I`ve experienced there are certain American`s and the British. The French are wonderful. I`ve been so embarrassed by "ugly American`s" that I pretended to be Canadian a couple times. Almost every time the people turn out to be from Texas.

@Lardcarcass: Look up the history of Haiti. Pay attention to how many slaves died. The French took more slaves than the USA and England combined, and almost all of them died in under 5 years...

Still with the France thing. Bashing France isn`t really cute or funny anymore. I`ve done my share in the past, but they`re coming around. They dropped some bombs on Libya.
Also, New Orleans rocks, and I`m sure Quebec is a nice place, so how bad can they really be?

@Scuzoid
I just want to point out that the Iraqi people all believed they had chemical weapons, and considering Sadam used it on his own people, it really wasn`t the stretch that the media portrays to think we would find it there. It probably all made it into Syria, and that`s why the Russians don`t want foreign troops snooping around their (this part is all conjecture).

You mean their Army was being slaughtered, right @Byfield? Of course civilians were getting killed too, but the Germans weren`t deliberatly targeting them at this point. As for Vichy... the less said the better!

That`s true enough @davymid! Individuals are most often "regular folks" regardless of country of origin.
Got the e-mail, I really should look there more than once a week...

Sorry for being rude @SmagBoy, as @davymid pointed out, not all Muslims are hard-core, so it IS entirely possible you had a beer with some. My mistake!

Dropping a nuke on anything would be a bad idea! The political `fallout` would be endless.

5Cats, please re-read my post. I wasn`t saying that I`ve done all of those things with Iraqis. Although, I have eaten with both Iraqis and Afghanis. And, just for your general education, not all of them are even Muslim or observant Muslims (even though, obviously most are).

My point in my original post was that in all of my world travels, in breaking bread (no, haven`t literally had bread with them all, either) with folks from other nations, I`ve found that we`re all pretty much the same. As for lying, I don`t need to. Plus, I imagine you could follow my contact info from here and find plenty of pics. I don`t have to *prove* anything. I`ve actually lived it and know better.

@Davy, one key omission. When "I" went to go find the cocaine, I took my brother with me and he died along with the "dealers." I don`t contest your scenario is any less ridiculous than what actual led to the invasion of Iraq, however you neglected the part where the "dealers" weren`t the only one`s who died in the fire fight vs just setting the house on fire. That`s a key distinction which has a strong bearing into why someone would put something like this on the back of their truck, as I`ve known a number of dead "brothers."

@carcass Baghdad, obviously. Most of your ideal`s likely won`t be met with this target, but if you`re going to conventional war without WMD for commercial gain, you don`t have ideals to begin with.

I`m not arguing this proposal is in the best interest of humanity, only that we all knew ahead of time going into iraq was purely to trade blood for coin. If that`s the case, why should it be "our" bloo

A century ago Bartholdi and Laboulaye gave us Lady Liberty because they admired what we were about. Can you imagine anybody in France doing something similar today? There are reasons for that. This is one of them.

BTW, although our relationship is strained from time to time, and we don`t always agree on the little things (relatively speaking), France has been one of our allies for a very long time, and I believe will continue to be so for a very long time. And clearly I think that`s a good thing.

Okay, Scuzoid, I`ll play your silly game. Let`s just say we could go back in time, and we`ve decided it is required that we commit some military act in Iraq and it is up to you to decide, what would be the target of your nuclear strike? Ideally this strike would reduce civilian casualties, remove Sadam from power and establish a democratically elected government which is friendly, or at least neutral towards the U.S.

"I`m pretty sure my next-door neighbor is a drug-dealer. No evidence to go on, but he`s pretty shady and I recently had my tires slashed. Pretty sure he had something to do with it. The cops tell me I should let it go, but f*ck that. I`m gonna go in there, bust his door open, and find cocaine and heroin everywhere!"

"Day two: OK, so I couldn`t find the drugs. And my tires being slashed may have been a random criminal after all. Still, we may as well have burned his house to the ground instead of shooting them all. End result would have been similar".

p.s. If all the people who`ve been in the war zone are as close-minded as you say they are, then you`ve been hanging out with the wrong people. Most I`ve met have been the complete opposite.
Tell me, which event had more civilian casualties. Little boy dropped on Hiroshima, or the Iraq occupation. There is no guarantee a nuke would`ve made a huge difference in the civilian death count after it was dropped, but one thing is certain, american`s would NOT have been occupying any territory near the drop zone. Entirely possible in this scenario America does little more than what it did in Japan, in which case, you don`t end up with American contractors (Who are still there) inciting continued violence.
Apples and Pears, Scuzoid. Japan was a clear and present threat to America in 1941, as evinced by their attack on Pearl Harbor. We can debate all day on the civilian casualties caused by dropping of WMDs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but that`s for another day.

Whether dropping a nuke on Iraq would have been better than invading is like asking the question (continuing the analogy here):

I have far more first hand experience with everything I just said than anyone here. I`ve worked with blackwater, with detainee`s, with foreign and local nationals in the zone. Dropping a nuke is a hellish idea just for oil (Which, be real, that`s all that was.) but it is NOT that different from what we did instead.

I give it about an 80% chance that he`s republican. Because American servicemen are about 75 to 80% republican, but that other 20 to 25% can have just as much of a propensity toward being that nuke-happy isolationist d-bag that doesn`t understand jack-poo about foreign relations.

Now, in 2003, I did sit down and chat with a lot of Iraqis over tea, lots and lots of really strong boiling melt-your-face hot even-though-it`s-180-degrees-F -outside tea. I liked most of them. They, being people are very similar to us in the west. They are far more hospitable, sharing every last bit of food they have with guests, even ugly Americans who bombed the poo out of their country. Many were very pleased we rolled in, and asked what the hell took us so long. So, contrary to what has been fed to us by the media, there are many people in the Middle East who actually like people from NATO countries. Many I consider friends.

5Cats, I`ve drank beer with plenty of Muslims. Hundreds. The only countries in the Middle East and North Africa that have a complete ban on alcohol are (to my knowledge) Iran, Libya and Saudi Arabia. And I`ve drank alcohol with Muslims in two of those. The ones in Saudi just go next door to Bahrain, the UAE, Syria, Jordan or Oman to get sloshed.

Heck, I remember one particularly wild night in Tunisia where I led the entire restaurant full of Muslims (who were all as drunk as I was on wine) in a rousing rendition of James Brown`s "I Feel Good"!

As someone said earlier in the thread, when you sit down and get to know these people, and actually TRAVEL, you realise that they`re not the demons that Fox News tells us they all are...

A: The first iraq "war" may as well have been ended with nukes. The shock and awe strikes initial strikes of both wars were just as fear inducing as a nuke with slightly fewer civilian casualties. That said, the initial strikes may have resulted in fewer civilian casualties, however over the course of a 10 year war, the differences between "little boy" and occupation are QUITE minimal.
B: Don`t bulls*it me. You didn`t sit and have a single beer with any iraqi in 1990.
C: No, actual combat vets who`ve stood in the same room as the man they just killed over oil disputes between people neither of us will ever meet, no, those vets grasp the fact that nukes serve a purpose.

I`m pretty sure that nuking the world`s supply of oil would be a bad idea. I imagine the oil that didn`t burn would be radioactive and useless, not to mention the fallout from that many nukes would eventually reach Europe and the US, and might cause a minor nuclear winter.

You`re right, some vets do think like that, especially before they`ve seen any combat or deployed anywhere. But mostly it`s people who`ve never served. Actually meeting people from other countries and talking to them, sitting at their table? Sharing a meal, a beer, a conversation with them? You kind of figure out that we`re all pretty much the same.

Anyway, I don`t really know any vets who DON`T think like this. None of us went over there because we wanted to help halliburton`s stocks, in which case, do what is most effective as quickly as possible to end up with a solution that risks very few american lives is far from ridiculous.
