Its not a small piece taken from the male! it is just as significant as taking the outer curtain of the woman, its just sometimes they do a lot more to the woman, but a lot of times its just the outside, which is comparable to male circumcision imo. I do think its worse what is being done to women, but the practice to either sex is disgusting and inexcusable.
its like someone saying killings dogs is bad but killing cats is okay.

Male circumcision - removing a very small piece of skin that protects the end of the male part
Female circumcision - removing all sexual organs of a woman which can ever bring pleasure or allow painless intercourse. The opening is also often sewn up so that intercourse is incredibly painful when attempted.
Both aren`t right imo, but one is waaay more wrong than the other.

So male circumcision is okay because sometimes it a doctor that does the procedure of removing the outside skin with a sharp tool, but when they do the same thing to women its not okay?
The premise is the same and it is a purely cultural and/or religious practice that does not have a good excuse to be done without the prior consent of the victim. If there was a possible medical benefit to cutting off your ears at birth, but it affected your hearing slightly or significantly, would you do that to your child?

its from an artist to protest and raise awareness of genital mutilation.
im more worried about the victims of this horrific practice, (male and female circumcision) than of someone shining light on it in a tasteless manner and i wish you were too.

Yikes. And black-face is never a good idea.

That might seem racist, but knowing the Swedes it`s probably inadvertently so. Having lived in Stockholm, I can say that the majority of Swedes are clumsy, naive, overly-literal. Not unlike this `artwork`.

Well @Falloutchick: Still not seeing it.

No `rings around the neck` like SOME African tribes have. No `blackface` which is considered racist these days, no clitorectomy (google image THAT! Prepare to throw up!).

This has as much to do with a famous historic artwork as it has to do with the Mona Lisa: zero.

It`s sickening, racist and the Swedish "Cultural Minister" should resign in disgrace. A news item says she has no intention of doing so, of course! She`s a liberal, she has no shame.

don`t know if anyone noticed in the news stories following this, but that cake is not "based off a tribal woman" - its an enlarged copy of "the venus of willendorf" - wiki/google it

@schecter5: Circumcision is a legitimate medical procedure. Female genital mutilation is exactly what it sounds like... they just cut it up to inflict pain, destroy the labia and make the girls ashamed of their bodies. You cannot really be that stupid.

Oh! Thanks @snuffy2009! It took me a minute to figure out, but thx! Don`t worry, I`ll remain my modest self...

@smaus: THAT is what any sane "Minister Of Culture" should have done at the sight of this "art".

So... lets do this when female genital mutilation takes place..

But no reaction what so ever for when an infant male gets circumcised at a mere few days of age.

Double standard? Hell. Yeah.

I mean...the intent is good. It`s dramatic and getting the issue attention in any case. FGM is a serious issue.

So, not only is it racist, but that`s actually a bloke depicting an `African woman` there. Double inappropriate. If you want to highlight FGM in certain African cultures (and I really hope that was the intent here), I`d say this is a textbook way *not* to go about it.

Black face is okay in Sweden, since there are no African Americans around to say anything about it.
