Why were you such a selfish whore, Rose? There was plenty of room!

Yup, first time I watched that movie I thought that they did NOT try hard enough to get them both on top and besides, you`d think that their attempts would have kept them warmer than just lying still or staying still in the water...

I think we have some Titanic Fanboys getting agitated.

They could have both drowned then Rose would not have had a daughter, Brock would have found the stupid necklace, and the movie would have been mercifully much much shorter...

Couldn`t have floated and stayed steady. But alas, I agree. Jack > Rose

"Oh, come on. They made it very clear that the piano lid -or whatever it was - tipped and didn`t have enough buoyancy with two people on it"

YES. He tries to get on and it starts to sink. They very explicitly showed that. WHich is why it always amazes me when people do stupid jokes like this. Watch the fudgeing movie. I haven`t seen it in a decade and I remember that scene.

The middle right would have been preferable seeing as holding each other would have conserved body heat and they both would have been warmer. Congratulations, you passed "surviving anyplace that`s cold" 101.

@auburnjunky
You`re forgetting that water is getting into the wood, a living tree has about 200% additional moisture weight. This is a piece of wood -in the ocean-, so it would presumably get worse than that. So instead of the wood counting for 200kg oven dry, it would be 600kg, which would easily sink with the two of them on there.

Oh, come on. They made it very clear that the piano lid -or whatever it was - tipped and didn`t have enough buoyancy with two people on it. It wasn`t a chunk of styrofoam, you know!

I always rationalized that it would tip over if he tried to get on.

Wasn`t the point that the door didn`t have enough boyuncy to hold their combined mass?

i never did like how that scene went. She broke off his frozen fingers and let him sink, how cruel was that ?!

This movie was bad for so many reasons, not sure why people focus so much on this detail.

It was the only way to avoid paying child support.

And for all of the Junior Einstein`s- if they distributed their weight, it would still float AND the fact that the board is staying upright despite his body weight being attached at one end with most of his weight below the surface indicates that it must be a fairly heavy and stable plank of wood.

in the movie- they both tried to get on, but it tipped and sank. He let her get on alone so it wouldn`t.

My wife was watching this one evening and I walked through the room on my way to the kitchen during this scene. I casually remarked "how come he`s not on the board with her?". I still don`t think she`s forgiven me.

Sigh. Another fail by i-a-b. Its pretty obvious these kids know nothing about physics.

"Ever Notice" ... ? WTH! It`s only something everyone has joked about for 10 years. Did you just become aware of this?

It all depends on the type of wood the door is made of, if it will support the two of them or not. However, it`s all a moot argument, as the sides of the door are broken, so water will get into the wood and it will eventually sink anyway, killing them both.

Noticed. No. By that point in the movie I was just glad it was over and I could get out.

No. Never saw the movie, actually. What I know about it is that some girl has a fling with a guy on a boat. He dies. She lives a full life, has kids, grandkids, etc. - probably remarried and had a long relationship with that guy. When she dies, she hooks back up with one night stand instead of the guy who was likely with her for the majority of her life.

The point was that their combined weight was too much for the plank of wood to support, not that there wasn`t enough room.

I can stand on a piece of paper, doesn`t mean it`s going to F`ing float.

Yes, I noticed. And five seconds later I realized that the door would have sunk by their combined weight.

who says it was about space?
maybe the full weight of both of them would have been too much for it to handle causing it to at least partially submerge leaving them in the cold water

there is more to it then just the size. its more about water displacement
