Eye for an eye. Give the old man a tazer and have him point it at the cop`s father, assuming he`s still living. Give him three long jolts and listen to him scream while the old man leisurely says, "stop resisting... *yawn* stop resisting."

You people keep forgetting to use the correct term. It`s `hero cops,` not just cops. Because all cops are heroes, even the ones that tase harmless old men because they like tasing people. They can do that because they`re heroes.
@ MacGuffin- One word: Ireland- ya`ll are still killing folks there.
Speaking as someone whose own mother`s side of the family were Catholics from Enniskillen, and yet who`s served in the British Army, there`s certainly a lot of blame to go around when it comes to Ireland. But dude, really, it`s been over there for at least 15 years.

I`m all for accepting that Scotland, let alone the UK, let alone the EU, isn`t perfect. Hell no. But really, I can`t think of a single case here that even comes close to any of the ones I`ve highlighted below for demonstrating such widespread corruption and brutality of a government against its own people. The worst thing is, a small proportion of Americans mistakenly believe that it`s somehow `un-American` to criticise when the authorities and politicians in the US step out of line. That myth is a big part of why the widespread abuse that goes on continues.

@yusuksomuch, it`s hard not to bash "america" when every day there`s a new guy out on a shooting spree, or yet another frivolous lawsuit or cops shooting a taser to an old guy in his house,...

... and then you go to another country and criticize them, make war against their ways and laugh at their differences to your country.

It`s hard for the rest of the world to not point this out and at least get a good laugh at it.

Why, the cases of American personnel getting out of hand are so rare indeed that Barack Obama had to renege on his electoral promise of releasing photographs that exist of American troops abusing Iraqi civilians, because there were so few instances that were so thoroughly investigated and rightfully punished that releasing all the photographic evidence of abuse that exists would only "risk American lives".

Oh look, yet more `isolated` cases of American police officers abusing American civilians, this time by murdering them and planting guns on the victims, one of whom was mentally disabled, to try and make their cowardly actions appear justified. It only took seven years to bring these officers to justice - mainly because the cop that was initially tasked with investigating the murders, Arthur Kaufman, conspired with the guilty officers to cover up their crimes against American citizens.

Yusuksomuch, you`ve got me all wrong. I don`t hate America - on the contrary, I think it`s one of the finest countries anyone ever stole. It`s your Governments of all flavours that have committed human rights abuses, your police that regularly engage in violence against vulnerable people they`re meant to be protecting, your torture centres that you laughingly call `prisons`, your military that regularly gets caught raping, torturing and murdering innocent civilians, and your populace that doesn`t do enough to demand change that I`m critical of.

this is the funniest thing you have said in awhile! you care about American society? do you care about your parents? do you bash them every chance you get too? you lose credibility when all you spew is hatred for a particular country, i know , i know, you took an oath to always post only negative BS about America when you became a lemming, and I commend you for keeping that oath.

It`s not the concept of `police` that`s the problem here. As I`ve mentioned before, I`ve worked in the police in UK, and I know that, used appropriately, a police service is a necessary part of a civil society. It`s specifically the way that American police, prison staff and military have behaved in a high number of cases over a long period of time that`s led me to conclude there are a disproportionate number of "rotten apples" in those particular barrels.

@soundman655 Too many people forget this. Sure, some cops are straight up non-nice individuals, like these guys. However, a lot of cops see more poo and danger than anyone here can even begin to imagine, so when a cop tells you to do something, you should drating respect him and do it. If you have a problem with it, then deal with it after the situation is diffused.

Also, @MacGuffin, as an American(which you are not), I have never seen a police abuse his/her power to the point where it put any innocent person in danger. I have never heard of any incidents in my immediate area. Why should some incident from 2009 and the opinion of a woman who gets pleasure out of hating on other countries and attempting to insult and degrade other people convince me that I live in some sort of police state and need to take action?

Everyone hates police until they need them. People who bitch about getting a speeding ticket are usually the first to complain when some jackass blows by them. Cops who give parking tickets are a-holes, but people who park illegally when you need the spot are the scum of the earth. Cops are not pooty people. They are not dicks. They are not a-holes. People are pooty people. People are dicks. People are a-holes. Some of them have badges. Some of them are on this site bitching about the ones with badges.

One of them is on this site bitching about the people bitching about everyone else.

I don`t doubt that the UK, and the wider EU too, has its problems. Honestly, though, I don`t know of another democracy in today`s world that gets away with abusing its own citizens` human rights as often as the US does.

The nearest I can think of in the UK is a small number of terror suspects that we`ve detained for eight years without trial now. That`s a shocking state of affairs, that`s definitely wrong. I would point out, however, that the only reason they`ve been detained at all is because the US authorities want us to deport our own citizens to the US for trial, for `crimes` that allegedly took place within the UK!

In East Germany, it was the more subtle forms of public protest that finally caused the wall to come down from within. E.g., if you were a state employee of *that* repressive regime, you found it difficult to make friends, have a relationship or get good service in shops (sure, you`d get the bare minimum co-operation people could get away with providing, but not the sort of positive human contact that makes life worth living). People just en masse didn`t trust them, and state employees were made pariahs amongst the very people they were oppressing. My guess is it`ll end up that way in the US. Most Americans I speak to don`t trust America`s own military, police, prison officers or courts: time and time again they`ve proven to be corrupt, with one law for the public and another separate law for themselves.

@MacGuffin- Name a time and place when/where people in authority did not oppress or take advantage of the `common man`. People carry on about America quite a bit, but conveniently forget what`s happening in their own (Metaphoric)front yard. The U.K. and other European nations have a rich history, spanning many centuries of such behavior- and ya`ll still have your problems today.
Bottom line- yes, it would be preferable for just laws that protect- rather than abuse- the general citizenry; And yes, it would be wonderful if those who are called upon to lead, would lead, rather than rule. But until that day of universal Human enlightenment, Sometimes, one has to stand up for what is right, even if by violent means.
The woman you mentioned(If you`re speaking of the one here in the U.S.), was not defending her home- there was no aggression, but had unrealistic- perhaps psychotic expectations of what census takers were doing, and the consequences of refusal.

This is old. That means we know how it turns out! McFarlane got 1.9 Million Dollars.

Since this was 2009, there wasn`t a whole lot of legal precedent on the limits of taser use. In late 2009, there started to be some cases that changed things. Cops are on notice now that you can`t use a taser just because a non-violent person doesn`t comply.

On a side note, think about how hard this case would have been to prove if the taser didn`t have a camera. He said she said. I think cameras should be everywhere when it comes to police activity....

I honestly just don`t understand that kind of thinking. There have been numerous cases where the right to bear arms *hasn`t* protected US citizens from abuses by US Government employees. There was a woman shot to death for defending her own home during the last Census, for crying out loud. What good was her right to bear arms then? It`d be far preferable if you just had meaningful laws protecting you against abuse by your authorities.

Instead, whenever Government employees are caught red-handed abusing citizens, your politicians have had the gall to pass laws protecting the abusers against criminal prosecution for crimes committed in the course of their jobs. There are also sovereign immunity laws limiting the amount of civil compensation that may be paid, however high an amount a jury may award. Why do you imagine those in

5150 is a 72hur hold for danger to self, others or graver disability (I work in mental health and in an ER) if the cop felt that he needed to place him on a hold of that type it was not to arrest him but to take him to the hospital, like te one I work at, and have him eval`d by a doctor to see if psych stabilization was required.

i am not saying it was right or wrong to taze him but I do not those holds are easy to contest in court (I am in court for them pretty often) and they are only used when a person present a danger to self, others or are gravely disabled.

I am guessing they were going for grave disability which wouldn`t really work if there were care givers in the picture.

You know, America, this crap is going to keep right on happening until you finally realise that the next victim could be you or one of your friends or family, and act to defend yourselves against the cynical way those in power are treating you. The way your Government, Military, Police and Correctional officers behave, they should be afraid to walk your streets, let alone admit out loud what job it is that they do to any right-thinking member of society. People who work for the state in a regime that acts this way should be as much pariahs amongst you as employees of other repressive regimes are in their countries. At least when the Egyptians, Bahrainis and even the Russians were being abused by their Government and their Police services, they were on the streets protesting. What are you doing to defend yourselves?
