Bears run faster than you, with one exception: downhill. If you run down a ramp or stairs you will be faster than the bear due to the fact that his front legs are shorter.

My other post was cut off and I was gunna mention what ivran touched on, that it is fairly uncommon for black bears to actually attack people at all, they usually run at the first sight of you unless they have cubs near by then they can get aggressive, if the bear just seems curious thats probably because it has become too complacent with people and probably rely s on them as a food source to some degree which can lead to further incidents which usually dont end well for the bear.

When I was first immigrating to Canada, and after spending a couple of road trips here where we saw some bears just wandering about near the roads, I got a little scared and decided to look up what to do. I found this site with good advice, and at the same time kind of hilarious. It boils down to this:

1. If a bear is 100 m from you, you`re kinda screwed. He can smell you faster than you can see, in fact your only chance are binoculars to spot bears before they spot you.

2. They can run way faster than you can. Usain Bolt can sprint at a top speed of about 38 km/h. A normal bear can run at 50 km/h. Yeah, even 100 m away it`ll catch you.

3. If it`s in front of you, fight a bear (yeah that sounds like a good idea), you can`t run, you can`t climb faster than the bear...

4. If you`ve got pepper spray, use it

Black bears aren`t generally aggressive without provocation so keep facing the bear, make some sound and back slowly away. Running is foolish and activates a chase instinct as is the case with many animals. The threat level here really isn`t as big as some people seem to try and make it. That`s not to say however that bears aren`t dangerous, just not quite as bad as some people think.

@ thubanstar When did I say anything about a zoo? This is in a neighborhood, not a zoo.

@NOCASH If it`s a blackbear, it probably won`t even attack you in the first place.

"So... For the benefit of someone who knows very little about bears, what SHOULD you do? I gather you play dead with a grizzly (I vaguely recall reading that somewhere), but I have no idea about black and brown bears..."

In boy scouts we were always told if we encounter a black bear in the wild (i live in ontario, lots of black bears), key word here is "wild", that you should never run. Stand your ground and maintain eye contact while being vocal and trying to appear larger then you are, i.e. put your arms out at your sides blah blah blah. Then they said if the bear doesnt leave by this point you should start to try and back away slowly while maintaining eye contact with the bear, they may try and bluff charge you at this point to intimidate but it is usually a bluff 90% of the time so dont flinch haha! Proceed to get even more vocal and throw objects at the bear if it is not appearing to lose interest. If it does attack fight back with everything you got,

You aren`t supposed to run because it triggers the predatory instinct but this bear is out of his environment and likely a bit scared and certainly not searching for grub. In this instance standing still may have threatened the bear where running wasn`t as likely to trigger an attack because the bear is so removed from normal. A lucky break for the guy. All the same though, it`s one thing to see or hear a bear and spot it and stand your ground acting big and making noise. It`s quite another to look up from you normal urban life to find a bear 4 feet off. I think there was little, if any, thought at all about what to do. That man was reacting on pure instinct and I must say, I was rather impressed with his reaction time and general speed on short notice. Reacting on instinct has nothing to do with his intelligence. I bet he was wired for hours on that rush though.

"`Cause if they`re in the suburbs it`s because they`re totally down to chill?"

Because it no longer has the home field advantage. In the suburbs you have lots of options on where to go, instead of just trees.

"I think the rule that you shouldn`t run when you see a bear mainly applies to the woods."

`Cause if they`re in the suburbs it`s because they`re totally down to chill? It`s probably distempered, in which case it didn`t chase after the guy because it`s getting ready to drop and convulse to death.

I think the rule that you shouldn`t run when you see a bear mainly applies to the woods. They may be able to climb trees but I bet they suck at jumping fences.

ivran, you should go pet some bears at a local zoo. I`m sure they would be very friendly and cooperative!

Texting... do it while you are sitting down, in a chair, not driving or going for walks where your neighbor animals walk.

Why the hell is this on the news? It`s just a damn bear! Sure it`s odd for one to be wondering around in the street like that, and I wouldn`t really want to be around it, but I don`t see how this makes the news. Also, it looks like a black bear, so the guy running was completely unreasonable. Hell, he could have probably walked up to it and pet it.
