Unless my info`s borked this is a case of the deceased having stated in his will that the tattoo artist should regain the artwork after he died. He might not have had to pay a fraction of the cost of the tattoo that way.

The caption is referring to the large tattoo on the skin, the large tattoo being the body suit. As to what or why he is holding it up or if that is human skin, I do not know.

I believe the deceased donates their skin, so that their inkwork can be preserved after they die.

Yeah, I saw a show about the history of tattooing and the Japanese are know to have the tattooed skin of dead people with full body suits preserved and put on display like a painting.

The person this belonged to was probably in the Japanese mob. The Yakuza I think. It`s to show that they belong to the Yakuza and also to intimidate other people.

It is sometimes customary to keep the skin after a deceased if they had japanese art (full body tattoos) on them. Family members can then frame the skin.. or whatever.

    No kidding.

Orgel hit the nail on the head. Gang members were also particularly keen on preserving the deceased skin because their tattoos were so important to them.

It rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again. It does this whenever it`s told.

Orgel is right, however I`ve heard stories of tattoos being removed all over the world for their artistic value (to be sold cold-heartedly for cash, of course)

Really? No one got it right yet? Yay, I get to be the smart one today! What this is is a yakuza body suit. Full body tattoos are illegal in japan and many public places ban tattoos completely due to their overwhelming gang affiliation (bath houses, restaurants, ect...) This is a medical school. They are paying yakuza members to donate their bodies to medical science so that they may preserve these works of art and display them. No, there is no Japanese custom to keep your dead relative`s skin framed in you living room. Where everyone got that from I have no clue. The Japanese are f`ing weird, but not that weird.

Well, considering the gorgeous artwork of Yakuza tattoos...and the fair likelihood the subject would die young when they`re all still pretty...I`m frankly not surprised.

I mean, think about it this way. We cover stuff in dead animal skin all the time. Why not preserve some of this artwork?
