From reading McGovern`s posts and everyone elses` I find it rather ironic that McGovern`s in his 30s, then again look at piperfawn`s most recent comment. Has the word "adult" suddenly taken on a whole new meaning?

It`s no big secret that McGovern gets his panties in a bunch when people here start US-bashing. I understand, I don`t care much for people bashing Canada, but whenever McGovern puts up pics of us seal-clubbing or putting too much mayo on a sandwich or whatever, the difference is that I can shrug it off and laugh at some of it. Also, I make it known that I don`t approve of things like seal-clubbing, whereas in my position McGovern would likely defend it. Unless you`ve lived in a country outside the US that has to deal with the US on a regular basis, it`s not always apparent how little of a sh*t the US gives about other nations. I know people now are going to point out the amount of foreign aid the US gives, but hey, Mitt Romney gives to charity too. Just sayin`.

I guess the US gov`t has never heard of a sunk cost before. The only reason they stay now is so that they don`t look stupid for failing to "bring democracy" to Afghanistan.

if that`s the case then I`m not looking forward to when Japan decides to get even for Hiroshima and Nagasaki, those were civilians after all.

also you`re stupid to think that regular Afghan citizens had anything to do with 9-11. It would be like saying anyone who goes to church is represented by the westboro baptist non-nice individuals.

Guy goes postal, do what we do when a guy goes postal. Put him on trial. He did it in a foreign country? Then they get to try him. Sucks for him, but nothing to be done about it but hand him over.

Follow-up press coverage suggests that Karzai and the Afghanistan parliament are saying that they want the US out.

Will this mean that the country is left with a hostile government even before the Taliban can re-assert authority? What will the US do?

Will they demand regime change again? I can`t see how they can find another bunch that will be any better; they`ve pretty much dredged the barrel of power grabbing sycophants already.

Despite the presence of US troops, the country is still a base for anti-western militants with a will and a way to reach out to the US mainland and they will be able to operate more overtly so once foreign troops withdraw.

We`re f`ed either way.

so when we heard that muslims destroyed a cemetery in Libya, we get tears in our eyes, and curse them out. When 16 innocent muslim people die, nothing, other then maybe they deserve it. I lost hope in humanity and i hope an earthquake wipes us all out.

If Obama knows what`s good for him and America, he`ll turn the soldier over to the Afghans for domestic justice without barring the death penalty. At least he should get a court martial in theatre and swift execution. Then there should be a full review of military immunity from prosecution from war crimes. I think all clear cut cases of murder in theatre should carry a mandatory death penalty. That would send a good message to US frontline soldiers that these atrocities are not to be tolerated.

After the trial, Obama should announce an immediate scale back of operations and and troop numbers and then when the dust settles a little, announce a complete withdrawal ahead of the elections.

On the plus side, I wonder if this man will have single handedly brought an early end to the war and occupation of Afghanistan.

If only it would convince this and future administrations of the futility of occupation of muslim countries.

maybe something important that everybody should look at
as an isolated incident too...

"My feeling is that it`s in our best interests to hold ourselves to a higher standard."

Well, clearly. That said, it isn`t Vietnam over there. It isn`t Nazi europe either, but for the most part, westerner`s aren`t seeking revenge against muslims. Most DO pity and look down on the arabs, but that doesn`t lead to rape and murder, just a nonchalance about killing hostiles and an annoyance when forced to be around any of their civilians.

Thing is, their combatants aren`t any different. The seasoned don`t care who they`re killing when it`s a hostile target, and view western civilians in the same annoyed perspective I view Arab civilians. You guys(civies) are all pumped on vengeance and rage, because, you simply don`t get to do anything about it.

Meanwhile, the freshly indoctrinated Al Qaeda/USMC grunt is going to be trigger happy.

I was about to go on a rant about the reliability of your sources, but I concur with your last statement.

@RoboPatton
You are partly right. It will not be a "show trial". If all is as it seems at this point, when he is found guilty, he will spend the rest if his life in Levenworth. Unfortunatly, we are all too soft and squishy in this country to hand out the capital punishment which it sounds like he deserves. That death sentance would also go a long ways towards placating the Afghans.

@Scuzoid: I`m not sure that your assertions can be taken as gospel, but considering that the web page I linked to was undeniably biased, I`ll give you the benefit of the doubt. My Dad, and both grandfathers served our country, so I have no desire to smear our armed forces, but I do take offense at the notion some people have that we should actually be cheering this guy for killing these civilians, because "they do it too". (I`m sure you`ve seen that argument on the internets, and don`t be surprised if the right-wing talking heads, and even the GOP candidates attack Obama for apologizing for this incident). My feeling is that it`s in our best interests to hold ourselves to a higher standard.

It would be nice if the American top brass did what RoboPatton suggests, but American precedent in similar cases is the guy is going to sent home, tried at show trial and discharged back into the general population without honorers and no pension, with reduced pay.

@jtre`s "us soldiers raping women"

Firstly, those aren`t US soldiers. I`d be surprised if they were american`s at all, but no, ankle shoe`s, not even boots, and shirts tucked into their pants? Yeah, no. Most likely, not even rape, just some actor`s.

Furthermore, detainee`s are pretty much the only female iraqi`s NCO`s would have any extended unsupervised contact with. I did a lot of "stuff" with a lot of detainee`s. Rape was never on the table, and those who would disregard this rule weren`t competent enough to ever work in that field in theater.

@Jamie: I disagree. I`m almost certain this`ll end up be a first timer. Going back multiple times wasn`t as big a deal as the initial shock to me.

Absolutely spot on. Wanna wage war? Fine..impose a war tax to pay for it, and bring back the draft, then see how many people want send in the troops. Hell, elect any of the GOP candidates (except for Paul, who I`m not a huge fan of) and you`re voting for a war with Iran.

Gerry1of1: a few more "isolated incidents": February 12, 2010 – 5 Afghan civilians including two pregnant women and a teenage girl were killed when US special forces raided a house in Khataba village, outside the city of Gardez where dozens of people had gathered at the home to celebrate the naming of a newborn baby. The U.S troops tried to cover-up evidence of the botched raid and admitted only month later that they had killed the civilians
February 14, 2010 – 12 Afghan civilians were killed by NATO missiles during a major U.S.-led offensive against insurgents in southern Afghanistan. ISAF admitted responsibility for the civilian deaths, saying that two rockets missed their target and landed on a compound in the Nad Ali district of Helmand province. President Hamid Karzai ordered an investigation into the incident that occurred less than 24 hours after he had again warned foreign troops to take all precautions to protect Afghan civilians.

Gerry1of1 sometime i come really near to think you are a good guy but you never fail to bring me back to reality.
This is not an isolated incident, last year one of your beloved soldier was incriminated cause he was the chief of a "death squadron" that terrorized and killed lot of civilians. You know 1+1=2, is not isolated "incident"( as you like to call this slaughter), and i`m sure that we have notice of this two tragedies only but who know how many others facts like that pass under silence. Your country is based on war, like the barbarians you want to fight, no differnces, except on the money spent for weapons. You are the same scum. Your beloved soldier have killed kids two years old,such dangerous terrorists right? This man deserve to be bringed on the pubblic square but in Afghaninstan not in your country.

Now all the libretards will come out of the woodwork here on IAB and say how it shows the US forces are no differant from the terrorists.

Go ahead, jump on this isolated incident and make into your poster-child for stupid arguements. In the end it won`t matter. They`d hate us even if this never happened. Now they`ll use it as an excuse to kill 500 of us. And the world goes round and round, never changing.
