@ivran I don`t need to prove it to you; you know it`s true. Any idiot knows that a culture that promotes violence as being cool is going to lead to more people being hurt. And that would include you.

@zombunny I hope so, but I don`t quite understand why she copyrighted the two slogans that are being used by the mobs to support him. It doesn`t really seem like this copyright could be used too much to help protect his name, and I don`t think she can get a copyright on her name alone. I really wouldn`t be surprised if a dirty lawyer is responsible for this. She may really think she is protecting her kid`s name and really just be feeding the pockets of her lawyer or something... who knows?

Every time you say `medea` instead of media I keep thinking someone is going to go murdering all their family (possibly with some face-melting acid) and then fly off in a chariot.

ps - Jason was a prick, but didn`t deserve to have his kids murdered in front of him.

@ATL1EN: even if you`re kidding, that`s bloody offensive.

@frnttrnty: It`s true, this is similar to the Rodney King case, and Crystal Gail Mangum (The Duke Lacross team) and Twana what`s her name (raped by 8 cops? Nope, drugs & sex with boyfriend) AND Bernard Getz (subway vigilante).

Hysteria is easy to generate, but the truth takes time to `settle in`. Once we hear ALL the facts in ZvsM I think Z will be cleared.

See what I mean? A culture of crime and punishment; an armed society filled with violence and suffering. You need to fix more than your gun prevalence; you need to work on the root causes of your crime.

Back to the topic: Canada has resticted gun sales severely these past 20 years, it hasn`t changed a thing!!! The gangsters STILL are armed to the teeth and the citizens get arrested for not having "proper paperwok" for their firearms. IE: There`s typo! Off to jail you go!

Luckily the Consevatives have recently overturned this draconain law.

Civilians don`t need those guns to `shoot bad people`, but it is a civilian`s right in many states to own those guns to defend their life on their property(this is what castle doctrines do) if necessary. There are quite areas of the US where home break-ins are very common. Why would we not be allowed to own a weapon to defend ourselves in our own home? I`m not saying we should walk around the streets with guns in our hands(Although for some reason that`s what some people picture the US as). That`s illegal without proper licenses and safety courses, but keeping a gun on your own property for whatever reason is a completely different story.

I`m not really hip on this `toxic culture` you speak of, but if it is what causes people to scream and start a ruckus over the drop of a hat and go around tearing up other peoples` property for no good reason, then I`m in agreement with you on that issue.

Re: the trademark... I`m not ready to condemn her for merchandising. Law is a just a tool and it`s likely she`s trying to prevent some self-styled `gangsta rapper` from hijacking her son`s name and demise.

As for the ethnicity of killer and the deceased, the real issue is not whether a person of one ethnicity is statistically likely to be killed by a person of another ethnicity, what matters is the toxic culture that fuels this violence.

I`m talking about the portrayal of certain ethnicities as being associated with crime and the glorification of that lifestyle, plus the prevalence of guns and the mentality that civilians need those guns to shoot `bad people`.

America, you`re just setting yourself up for a culture of killing.

k @Cajun.

My overall point is: it`s a very small difference, but it`s there. The reasons for it are not "based on race" I think, but part of a variety of things like:
environment
parenting
alcohol
drugs
the court system (since we`re only talking "murder" here, and blacks are often `over charged` while whites more likely to get a good lawyer and `plea bargain`)

& etc.

It`s a sad fact: blacks murder more people (proportionally) than whites. More blacks GET murdered (proportionally) than whites too.

QueenZira-"Conservative arguments throughout this whole controversy have been to defend the perpetrator"

Actually, the majority of the conservative arguments have been `don`t blame racism without any facts`.

QueenZira-"Conservatism being the last hold out of threatened white males is relevant to this discussion."

Quite a missunderstanding you have on conservatism. Or is it a bias? But hey, never let facts get in your way. (But it must be quite convenient to have an `Ebil Organization` to blame everything on.)

That`s ya`ll`s argument to date: "White guy kills black guy due to racism!" (what? he`s not white? nor conservative?) "`light-skinned hispanic kills black guy due to Ebil White Guys` racism."

@kitteh9lives - I like her reasoning. Hope it works.

In other words:
Trayvon was more likely to be killed by: (in order)
black friend or relative
black stranger
white friend or relative
white stranger

Same thing (almost) goes for whites:
white friend or relative
white stranger
black STRANGER
black friend or relative

Except for a SMALL difference in black stranger vs black friend. That, I believe, is the basis for many white people`s fear of black strangers. It`s not based on `myth` it`s based on observational fact.

The important thing is the ratio of w/b and b/w murders. Again, whites most often associate with whites and blacks most often associate with blacks (on a per capita basis!)
If "all things were equal" (which is NEVER EVER the case in REALITY!) then whites would murder 5X as many people as blacks.
Because most white (and blacks) are friends and relatives of other whites (and blakcs) this is not the case.

Thx @kitteh9! I`m a big fan of "updates" and "followups"!
I`ll set up my webcam @Gerry1...

Here goes @ivran! Some of this may LOOK racist, but I swear it is not! (note: this is "murder" not "killed by")

THE #1 REASON why whites kill whites and blacks kill blacks is: MOST people are killed by friends, relatives & aquaintences.

Whites: murdered by family/Aquaintences: stranger/unknown:
2008 f/a 4,582 (b: 519) s/u 2,561 (b: 515)
2009 f/a 4,356 (b: 394) s/u 2,346 (b: 478)

Blacks:
2008 f/a 3,274 (w: 259) s/u 2,844 (w: 122)
2009 f/a 3,047 (w: 234) s/u 2,796 (w: 142)

Ugly truth: Whites are much more likely to be killed by blacks than blacks are by whites.

Blacks are proportionally more likely to be killed by strangers than whites.

SO: A black person (includes males and females of all ages) should be MORE afraid of: a) white stranger? b) black stranger?

2005:
Total blacks murdered: 6,345
Black on black murder: 5,734
Whites murder blacks: 463
Others murdering blacks: 140

They "lost" 8 murders, because if multiple victems of different races were killed at the same time, it gets counted strangely.

Whites: 7,119
w:w 5,579
w:b 1,311
w:O 229

M bm B vs B mb W = 12.4:1
W mb W vs W mb B = 4.3:1
So a Black beign murdered is 12 times more likely to be done by a black rather than a white.
But a White being murdered is only 4.3 times more likely to be by a White than a Black.

And Whites outnumber Blacks 5:1

If this offends anyone I`ll delete it, k? These are raw numbers, NOT "reasons why" ok?

Plus there is not enough cameras around to make it worth their while. Also how fast do you think it would take one of there hood rat friends to turn them in if the Black Panthers offered up a reward like they have for Zimmerman.

@QueenZira: your link shows the same stats as mine, only harder to read.
Look: black on black murder (2005) is 94% of all black murders! But for white on white it`s 86%.
Why are MORE blacks killed? not because whites are killing them, it`s because they`re killing each other!

Whites are LESS LIKELY to kill blacks than blacks are to kill whites.
AND there`s a 5:1 ratio to compound that.

Fair question @LillianDulci:
The media is feeding a lie: blacks are more often the victems of white violence.
This is utterly un-true!
Blacks (and whites) are MOST OFTEN victems of same-race crime.
In fact, whites are vastly more likely to be a victem of a black criminal than a black is to be of a white criminal.
In the case of murder the rate is 12X higher than "average".
So the MSM allows Sharpton et al to perpetuate this myth, dividing the country along race lines, knowing full well it`s a lie.
Even the PotUS gets in on it!
Why?

@Cajun: total of that race killed by all races? Incuding "unknown".
I`ll double check...
Yup! (5,834) total black people murdered, of them 5,286 were murdered by other blacks (male OR female)

@QueenZira: "institutionalized racism" Oh yeah! Like the Jews, they were dirt poor and lived in ghettos, forbidden to go to good schools, still are!
And the Irish, same thing!
And the Chinese, same!
I am being sarcastic. LOTS of "races" have been discriminated against in the USA and Canada. Japanese internment camps?
But those people worked their way OUT of the ghetto. It`s not easy and it`s not pretty, and it`s true NO ONE should face discrimination in modern times.
But humans are animals after all...

Institutional racism is to blame, institutional racism which ensures poorer quality schools for minorities, a De Facto (as differentiated from De Jure) segregation of housing and living arrangements, and historical repercussions from all the above align to make life harder and less fair for minorities. Tackling these problems are not just black people but white people as well, there is no vilified Other when both black and white work together.

Whites killed by blacks vs blacks killed by whites.
1,177 vs 464 in 2009.
1,324 vs 459 in 2008.

Not including Aborigionals, Latinos or "other".
5:1 ratio of w:b, but 1:2.5 murder ratio.

See? It`s about 12X statistical average for black on white murders.
I`m certain the rest of the crime stats are 8X-10X above average too.

IN THE USA:
Blacks murdering blacks: Males and females combined:
2009: 5,286 (5,834 total blacks murdered)
2008: 5,500 (6,117 total blacks murdered)

Whites killing whites?
2009: 5,330 (6,702)
2008: 5,601 (7,143)

Keeping in mind there are about 5X as many whites in America...

So, 90% of blacks murdered are killed by blacks, obviously whitey is the problem!
(80% of murdered whites are killed by other whites, to complete the comparison)

Grendel I didn`t avoid the question, if you shoot the messenger, that`s your problem. I`ll put it simply for you- anti black racism is not the sole property of white people. Minorities can be racist to one another. I don`t know why you keep bringing up Zimmerman`s political registration. That means nothing.

Conservative arguments throughout this whole controversy have been to defend the perpetrator, a light skinned perpetrator killing a black child. Conservatism being the last hold out of threatened white males is relevant to this discussion.

As for the rest- go listen to the 911 tape.

How often do people get "I am (insert first name)" shirts? I have an extremely common first name (which isn`t Lillian btw) and I highly doubt my name has ever been on a shirt like that. Plus, they could change it to "I`m Trayvon" if they really wanted to do that.

Ivran, conservatives like to make believe that race has nothing to do with this case, and indeed argue vociferously against it being framed that way, precisely because it exposes the way they benefit from white privilege. That kind of scrutiny doesn`t sit well with them.

@QueenZira, I was making a joke, eh? I knew it means "relating to money" without even looking it up (which I just did, to be sure). Even if I didn`t I could figure out it`s meaning from your sentence.
Some folks complain that I over-use "lolz" and such, so I didn`t include a (j/k) I thought you`d figure that out...

If (I stress that because of the source) it is being done at all it`s being done to pay for a trial. Not to cynically make money from a tragedy.

In Feb. a mother lost her baby, a baby who would still be alive today were it not for Walking While Black. "Compassionate Conservatism" my a$$.

@QueenZira: I  NY was out years before 9/11, eh? The guy who designed the graphic didn`t bother to trademark it, OOPS!

I love it when you talk dirty!

That`s just stupid, I`m willing to bet there`s more than one person named Trayvon, so why shouldn`t they be able to make a T-shirt that says "I Am Trayvon" ???

all that 9/11 stuff isnt being done by the families, its done by companies trying to make a buck. this is done by his mom, just days after he was killed.

I kinda wonder what all the conservative phuckwits here think about 9/11 being commercialized, you know all those coins minted from the silver stored in the towers with the little unfoldable mini towers on those same coins. They were being hawked on tv no less!

And lets not forget all the I <3 NY Tee shirts and little plastic statues of Lady Liberty too. My my, we made a killing off those! (no pun intended) It`s like Americans *wanted* it to happen for purely pecuniary purposes!!

i cant wait for all the facts to come out and this be over with. this is gonna end up similiar to the duke lacrosse case where everyone quickly jumped to conclusions and were calling for heads to roll then the truth came out. and for the people saying that wearing a hoody doesnt make you suspicious looking, my roomate, who is well known in our neighborhood, was out looking for our cat who ran away and he had his hood up. we had two neighbors call the cops beause of a suspicious person with a hood on walking around.

It`s not his name alone. It`s the two phrases, "I am Trayvon" and "Justice for Trayvon." She`s not `protecting his memory,` she`s just after the money.

It`s not cold. She is protecting the name of her son. If he was alive the law would protect his name and likeness...but after he dies he name has no protection. She doesn`t want people using his name in the wrong way. You will find that many families of famous people do this to protect their name.

While it is terrible, if she didn`t, there would be plenty of people selling t-shirts with his name and image on them. At least now she can keep some of the money.

Well the media has exploited the situation from day 1, feeding a steady stream of half truths about what happened. She might as well get in on the act and exploit her son just like the news media did.

I really wouldn`t want other people selling shirts and making money off the death of my son, so I could understand trademarking the phrases. But only if it wasn`t for any selfish reasons and all proceeds would be donated to some sort of a charity. Now if she did it with the intent to monetarily benefit from the shooting death of her son, that`s quite despicable.

Probably a bit of both. It seems tacky - but at the same time, I can completely understand wanting to do it.

Well that is interesting.
Kinda seems a little cold and calculated but you can`t fault her for being stupid. Although if you are going to do it, add clothes for crying out loud.

Meh. No way to answer this question until we actually see what happens. Her lawyers have probably advised her to do this in order to maintain control of the situation. It`s doubtful that she`d actually be able to capitalize on this, anyway...

1. She likely doesn`t have the resources to maintain actual lawful usage of the trademark.

2. If she herself doesn`t use the trademark (either through the development and production of merchanise or through the licensing of the TM itself, she probably won`t be able to get any money out of it.

3. It`s unlikely that she would be able to make anything off a trademark infringement lawsuit in the future, as this will be well-known and unlikely to be violated.

My guess is that this is coming from her attorneys - whatever their incentives - and she won`t see a dime out of it.
