This Could Be American Gothic For 2012 [Pic]

Grant Wood painted American Gothic in 1930 of a farmer and daughter. If Wood painted it today, it might look like this.

Living in an area with many farmers, I have to say that it pretty much still looks like the original American Gothic painting. Overalls are big, as are sales at Tractor Supply.

Also, OH NO to the mango! :(

How can it be American Gothic without a gothic arch?

In defense of the "American Gothic" reference, Wood`s painting was an attempt to address the quietly proper indignation that he felt was at the root of America`s breadbasket. This image shows a woman who is loud and gleefully inappropriate. It could be a perfect foil to what American used to be.

The fact that this was compared to American Gothic is a huge fail. If Wood painted American Gothic today, I seriously doubt it would be anything like this.

You know nothing Eugenius.

Details, for those interested...

The painting is by an artist named Patrick Martinez. His website can be found here. (An image of this painting can be found on page 4 of the Selected Works section.)

The painting appears to alternatively called Mona Loca and High Fructose Corn Loca. It was painted in 2008.

I don`t really see the comparison to American Gothic, but it`s still a remarkable piece. I love artwork with a message.

@Ivran: That goo leaking out the back? Ummmm... that`s what happens, I imagine, if you neglect to change a diaper for a couple of days.

@LillianDulci: He was about 2... but maybe 3 years old. A toddler, definitely under 4.

But the crazy part is they were doctors... medical doctors feeding a baby cheetos and pop...

Everything else aside, it`s nice to see someone recognize that American Gothic is a painting of father and daughter. Now that you know (if you didn`t already), you too can be slightly creeped out when some couple gussies up for Halloween as the supposed AG "couple."

One of the best things about this is the sparkling gold jewelry on the mother: keenly accurate, ironic, maddening, and sad.

That`s a sad story @jadian, and I don`t care what `race` the parent was, it`s equally sad. Poor kid!

jendrian, a baby baby, like under 1? Or a toddler? (both are bad imo, but one is pretty much insane and the other is just really stupid)

ha... I once spent 2 weeks with a family of doctors (they were all physicians for 3 generations minus one medical lawyer) and one of them had a baby that was fed coke & cheetos for breakfast. No, I`m serious, almost exactly this.

Yes, I`m not kidding, I don`t have pictures but that`s what I saw. I don`t know what the kid ate for lunch and supper because I was out for the rest of the day, but well... yeah, it does literally happen.

Then again they were never on the phone, they were always paying attention to this child...
