Rabbits are already made of tasty meat. Why bugger with that? Turn politicians into chocolate, that would solve two problems.

Actually, it was originally a Pagan festival of fertility, and the Christians hijacked it to destroy the Pagan meaning.

    True story.

@auburnjunky: Yep, and the whole hunting for eggs thing used to be a fertility rite that young married couples would do... and people wonder why teen pregnancy is up.

    auburnjunky:
...just the way Christians hijacked the winter solstice festival, for that matter. They call it Chris-, Christ-something.

Argh...no...the Christians did not hijack Easter. You can thank Hershey for that.
The fact that the Christian Feast of the Resurrection falls at the same time as the pagan festival Oestra is coincidental...in fact, Oestra falls around March 21st. The Feast of the Resurrection falls on the Sunday of the Seder, which happens to fall on the first sabbath of the first full moon after the vernal equinox.
Why does it fall around that time? Well...the Jews follow the lunar calendar, which means they use the lunar cycle to determine their months. And, it just so happens that Passover is around the same number of lunar cycles each year...putting it to be the first full moon after March 21st, whereever that may fall.

It was Cadbury, Hershey`s, and Nestle`s who got together and thought, "Hey...you know what? There are a bunch of families getting together this time of year. Why don`t we use that time to make loads of money?"
So, they thunk and they thunk, and they noticed that an obscure pagan festival fell around the same time, which involved children looking for the March Hare`s eggs. So, they took that idea, and used it, and mashed it in with a family time.

The fact that the Christian Feast of the Resurrection falls at the same time as the pagan festival Oestra is coincidental
    Riiiiight. Let`s check some history:
Easter: Many pagan religions had resurrection ceremonies at this time. Oestra, babylonian Goddess Ishtar, etc., and just because the day doesn`t necessarily fall exactly on Christian Easter, it still doesn`t mean they didn`t put it here on purpose.
Christmas: Saturnalia, birthday of many pagan gods like Mithras.
Lent: The 40 days of fasting during Lent was observed by the followers of the Babylonian deity Astarte, the Egyptians who worshipped Osiris, and the Yazidis (Kurdish people who profess their old religion) and in the Greco-Roman religions, like that of Mithras

But yeah, it`s probably just coincidence.
