@smaus, some apartment buildings have one hot water heater for the whole building. Mine does.

you could fit a PERSON inside one of those things, the real question is who went through the process required to open the water heater just to put a chicken in it?

You could fit a person in there, but the opening is very small. Plus, the person that opened it would have been injured by the hot water coming out. Those things are sealed. It is not possible to put a chicken in one. I work in property maintenance and have replaced many of them. There are two pipes, one going in and one going out.

    I call fake.

you would have to turn off the water at the main, drain the hot water heater, cut a hole in the top, like removing the top of a tuna can, insert chicken (or body, like in an Alfred Hitchcock story), weld the top back, then reconnect intake and exit pipes. all for boiled chicken? i don`t think so. not to mention that whatever disolvable matter (and bodies of all types are disolvable) put into said hot water heater would be dispersed far and wide throughout said system...

(don`t people read mystery fiction anymore? so much useful information derived...)

Yeah, you cannot `open` a hot water heater. As has been pointed out.
Even putting it on top of the heater wouldn`t do much good, since they`re typically well insulated...

Some older hot water systems have a cistern at the top of a building to provide water pressure. Some especially dodgy cisterns had removable lids.

Wow! I`ve worked on a few of these in rural areas with a well system when I worked HVAC. In older systems that have not been brought up to code the systems cistern gets extremely hot from the return water valve. The chicken most likely jammed open the float valve causing an overflow. Yea, I would be pissed.
