Yea, he didn`t do anything when they said it burned, but c`mon. Those kids are old enough to stop or at least drop it if it hurts bad enough. He can`t force them to hold it til it burns holes through their hands. Even if he put them up to the challenge, there`s bound to be a couple of dumb kids in the class that would challenge each other anyway.

I couldn`t sit through the whole thing (home videos hurt my head), so I`m a little confused. Did the teacher put them up to this/force them, or just not give a poo as they started playing with it?

My high school chemistry teacher let me chew a small piece... (Mind you, I`m not sure he was aware of this fact until I had already stuck it in my mouth.)

It was fucking cold... But I didn`t end up with blisters or anything. Just one of those cold toothaches, like when you bite off too much ice cream.

The trick is to keep it moving. Let it set in one spot too long and it`ll burn you.

If the teacher didn`t tell them even that basic precaution before giving it to them, then he certainly is a moron and deserves to have the punishment laid on thick. That he didn`t stop them after seeing their hands getting burnt, means that he deserves some jail time for child abuse or something.

you know that stuff you can burn a wart off with? Sure it`s good for the rest of your hands.

The kids were not dumb. Science class is where you learn about such things and if the teacher says it`s only a temporary harmless pain sensation that will pass without real damage they will believe him.

He should be fired.

The kids were dumb as hell, but the teacher is either a drating moron or a sick, sadistic bastard.

@ Everyone saying the kids are idiots.

The reason that the kids carried on even though it hurt is that they know they SHOULD be able to trust a teacher`s judgement. In high school I knew that everything we did in science was far beyond safe. Stuff like acid is diluted so much that it`s practically harmless...

It is entirely the teacher`s fault for letting them do this in the first place, and for acting as if it was completely safe.

I`ve handled dry ice for a second or two with my bare hands and that doesn`t damage the skin, but you do really need proper PPE. What I used to do for fun as an undergraduate was to put small pieces of dry ice in a 1.5 mL microcentrifuge tube, then toss it into another lab. After a minute or two they pop open violently. Dry ice grenades.

"He`s getting disciplinary lectures". Does that mean a lunchtime in detention in the staffroom with a coffee and cable TV?

The only issue with it being all his fault is the students should`ve known better either in general or after the first student. Then it just became a stupid game. Granted he should be fired anyway, but the students did bring it upon themselves when they participated.

completely mental!
I`m surprised the 12 yr olds didn`t have more sense. My kids would know not to do that, (thanks to IAB`s many videos of things getting smashed to smitherens frozen by dry ice)

Ok.. The teacher told the students to hold it as part of a science experiment on the effects of dry ice. The students then decided to make a game of it and see who could hold it the longest. The teacher let them do this... the students didnt let go of it because the teacher told them that they are wusses if they let go after a short time. So the competition was pushed to keep goin. Yeah it was stupid but they all played there part.

I propose a sealed glass bottle with dry ice and water be shoved up this worthless human scumbags rectum ASAP.

Anybody questioning why the principal did not call the police?

Oh, my god. He`s getting disciplinary lectures!? The parents should sue him and the school, and make this huge. There is nothing even slightly okay about this.

I agree with CrakrJak: Fire him. That`s a lapse of judgment that`s inexcusable. The man clearly doesn`t have the common sense required to be trusted with the safety and supervision of children.

razbitom, the only reason I knew about dry ice by their age is because of my older brother having school projects with dry ice. The first time I actually dealt with dry ice in school was around the same age as them.

"Why did they hold that long?"

I duno, maybe because the teacher, which they`ve been told their whole lives to trust and respect, TOLD them to see who can hold it the longest?? I`m assuming this is the first time they`ve handled dry ice. Kids aren`t wizards and we can`t assume they automatically know something`s dangerous when their own teacher is telling them to hold it without gloves...

i`m just saddened to see that not a single one of the kids had the prior knowledge not to do it. what the hell are parents teaching their children? these were sixth graders, fer cryin` out loud. they REALLY should have known better.

On another note - Get some root-beer extract , anise, sugar, clove, licorice, nutmeg, and dry ice. Dissolve the sugar with some water and add the extract and spices in a pan. Allow to cool and add to more water in a cooler or LARGE pan. Add dry ice with the lid able to vent excess co2 easily.
Google some some recipes for quick homemade dry ice root-beer. I never follow a recipe too closely, each batch is different.
At least one pound of dry ice per gallon. I make it outside, good ventilation is a must. If its mosquito season cover the bubbling mixture with a cloth or screen since mosquitoes are attracted to co2. The dry ice will chill and carbonate your mix.
Homemade root-beer is delicious!

A bit off topic but hopefully someone finds it useful. ;)

I handled dry ice at an old job once, not realizing that there was a small hole in my gloves and IT SUCKED! This teacher should be fired and forced to sit bare-assed on a dry ice chair for this.

Sure the teacher should have stopped it, but don`t think he should get anything more than a written warning. If you`re dumb enough to keep holding something once it starts hurting you deserve everything you get.

In the kids` defense, the cold from the dry ice partially numbs the area. If the area weren`t numb, they would have put it down much faster. The kids likely don`t know just how bad it is until it`s too late.

....Why did they hold that long? I`ve held Dry Ice before, it`s not that bad so long as you aren`t retarded enough to hold it for too long. It`d be like someone holding a giant icicle in his bare hands; eventually it`s going to hurt.

"Its not they`re fault that they didn`t know it would hurt, its the teachers fault for not, you know, teaching them that it hurts. "

It is entirely their fault. It does not hurt immediately, it does not cause frostbite immediately. You hold it and it gets colder and colder as the heat is sucked from your skin. It is their fault for not stopping when it started to hurt. You CAN safely hold dry ice for a few seconds with zero damage.

wake_n_bake-"Isn`t dry ice pretty poisonous as well?"

Dry ice is not poisonous. But it WILL displace the oxygen out of the atmosphere and can suffacate you in an inclosed area.

Kain1-" Dumb gd kids"

Of course they`re dumb. They`re KIDS. Kids tend to be uneducated about many things, which is why they go to school. The teacher`s resposibility is to educate them and supervise them in case of situations like this. He should lose his job and be sued in civil, if not criminal, court.

A teacher in the US would keep their job, no matter what.

Kain1-"but why was there more than one kid injured??."

Because the type of burn dry ice will give your is not immediately evident. They say, "hey, cool, my skin is frozen and will eventually thaw." In reality, the skin is frozen to the point where necrosis results, and the skin and subcutaneious tissue is destroyed.

"pish! - I put my hand in liquid nitrogen all the time :)"

That`s completely different as lN2 vaporizes and forms a thin gas bubble around your hand protecting you from direct contact for a period of time. Even then, as a demo, only a teacher or demonstrator should attempt that.

I have three dry ice `wounds` right now, but I knew they`d occur and did it on purpose to remove warts.

This is stupid. The teacher is stupid and the kids should realize pain means to PUT IT DOWN. I handle dry ice at work all the time without gloves, but I roll it on my hand so it keeps moving while I carry the piece wherever I`m going for whatever prank I`m up to. Were the kids allowed to do that?? XD

drats Evan beat me to it...however the real danger to dry ice is that it is -109F...so that can "burn" you as evident to the burns the kids got on their hands.

"Isn`t dry ice pretty poisonous as well? This is ridiculous "

Pretty sure dry ice is non-toxic...I unno, that is a good question. I think it is pretty much frozen CO2... I think there is a food grade version of dry ice that you can use in punches and junk like that.

Naw...you might be thinking of mercury. Dry ice is just frozen carbon dioxide - it`s pretty inert.
why were they holding it with no gloves? A dare or something?
Ah, no sound, I see.
The teacher challenged them to a contest to see who could hold it the longest. When the first few kids got blistered, the teacher told them the blistering would go away in 40 minutes (it will last at least two weeks in some cases, according to the news report) and encouraged other children to try to beat the record time.

WTF??!! Were the kids laughing as they showed their horribly blistered hand at the beginning? Or crying? And this teacher needs to be locked in jail for BURNING the skin off CHILDREN`S hands! And in the video you clearly see the fat bastard teacher just sitting there, not calling an ambulance or trying to help in any way, this man is a monster! I`m going to be sick now. This guy deserves the maximum sentence for child torture.
