I love that it is so precise and that it can pick up disabled bays, stop signs and speaker boxes... and then parks crooked on the driveway.

The car?
It`s a Toyota Pious.
The whirly thing on the roof is a giant Thardo Khorlo electric Dharma wheel.

(Absolutely no offence intended to any party whatsoever)

@BritInvasion: 1: Where the drive through is? My guess, a combination of road markings, and possibly a `marriage` of GPS and the data from the spinning camera on top.
2. Again, a camera, that can detect what`s on the road. Wording, signs, markers.

But there is one major, MAJOR flaw with it. It`s a Prius....

Awesome! So full of win!

I recall seeing a "self driving" contest on PBS a few years ago. On a closed course those cars (trucks and a motorcycle too!) could hardly move, never mind other traffic!

The technology has come a LONG way since then, obviously.

Now, where`s my flying car, ala: The Jetsons!

Buzz kill time!

1.) How did it know exactly where the drive thru was? Google maps only maps roads, not parking lots.

2.) What about if 1 way roads are flip flopped or new road routes, how will it navigate those?

<boring factoid>

Even if this technology worked 100%, you could *still* be charged with an offence in the UK, that of "being in charge of a motor vehicle whilst drunk". There`s meant to be a valid defence if you can prove you didn`t intend to drive, but there have been some really stupid outcomes in court. One guy even got prosecuted for retrieving his briefcase from the boot of his car in a pub car park before intending to call a taxi to take him home - by opening his car, it was deemed he`d committed the offence of being in charge of the vehicle whilst over the limit.

At the moment you have to have a driver, but I bet UPS and FedEx can`t wait for the day when autonomous vehicles are allowed and they can dispense with all those pesky employees.

Google has been driving these cars around CA for some time. However, the current law demands that the driver is licensed, competent, and sober, since it is possible they can take over control. So, I don`t understand how a blind person can be behind the wheel and eating a taco on public streets. Maybe they had a police escort.

Hey it`s in my neck of the woods! Very cool! For the people concerned with safety -- Self Driving cars react faster and more efficiently than any human being is capable of. So there goes that argument....

Pretty awesome. Seemed dangerous to be testing it out on the streets like that; then I saw they partnered with the Police Dept.

Unfortunately if this is pushed out to public all wrecks involving one would likely be pinned on it unless it was blatantly the other guy. This would be made worse by the likelihood that no one in the self driving car would be paying much attention to account for what happened.
