Rush Limbaugh stated that this woman "has so much sex that she can`t afford her birth control". I do not think this man understands how birth control works.

Wow... it`s not surprising he doesn`t realize that birth control pills aren`t something to take specifically on the days sex is expected.

If a woman doesn`t have sex... she`ll go through a monthly pack in a month.
If a woman has so much sex that it causes pornstars to blush... she`ll still go through the same monthly pack in (number crunching)... a month.

Plus this is negating the fact that a good portion of birth control pills are also used to take persistent moderate to severe cycle pains and swings down a few notches.

Just as I said the other day, I`m all for birth control pills raining from the sky. That said, it`s $10 at Walmart for a 3 month supply of birth control pills, and you can get a year`s prescription from any free clinic in your area, or from a GP for about $50.

Condoms are about 50 cents apiece, so if you`re having sex once a day, that`s about $180 a year.

    These are not bank-breaking figures...

He definitely doesn`t understand how birth control works, is this supposed to be a joke?

It is none of his business, or anyone`s business, who she is having sex with (except for her consenting partners). Also hormonal birth control is used for more than just preventing pregnancy. It can be used for a number of medical reasons, I`ve been on it since I was 14, I certainly wasn`t having sex at 14.

This war against women in America is infuriating to me. Women have the right to have control over their own bodies, middle aged men should stay out of it.

Birth control is a right and everyone has it. All you have to do is abstain from sex. People shouldn`t have to buy you condoms and pills. What does not having sex have to do with a woman`s health? If you define a prostitute as getting paid to have sex then this woman is a prostitute. This pisses me off so much.

@tatripp It is not necessarily about the birth control itself, but it is about the fact that they will pay for Viagra (ED pills), but not hormonal pills that treat hormonal disabilities and just happen to also be used as birth control.

As a man I think this is total BS. This guy should be off the air. yea he says supid crap all the time but calling women...all women that want a use birth control hookers and sluts...come on this guy is a complete moron and if you listen to him and like what he has to say, you are a bigger moron.

oh and now that ratings can be more accurately determined for radio shows it was found that he is not nearly as popular as once thought and has been losing sponsors left and right.

@tatripp I am so incensed by your lack of understanding and the issue in general that I created this account... Don`t feel special btw. Abstaining from sex would not help my medical conditions be kept under control. I entered menarche (look up the word and improve your vocabulary) on my 10th birthday, was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome at 12 and Endometriosis at 15. I also have had my left ovary removed due to complications. Without the use of the pill from the age of 11 or so, my outcome would have been significantly worse. I work in the healthcare industry, funnily enough, and have studied the American healthcare model. I`m sorry but it suck balls. And before you start spouting on about use of the pill = promiscuity, I was well into my 20`s and engaged before that topic arose. Also the radio host is a douche. Snuffy has it right about our Karl Sandilands *wanker* He paid the piper for what he said. I can`t stand him either Snuffy. KK Rant over, Peace out.

@AvatarJohn; there is absolutely nothing intellectual about Rush Limbaugh`s bigoted rants on any number of topics he so insensitively shouts whilst upon his soapbox, and therefore could never serve to challenge anyone, but rather infuriate. It is interesting the man you so chose to defend over a semantic issue (i.e., the caption should read `Rush Limbaugh thinks getting paid to have sex = prostitution`), himself made a grave error in not actually listening to the woman`s testimony; never once did she discuss bawdy or lascivious details that would lead any sane and rational person to believe she wanted to be paid to have sex, let alone have the audacity to call her a slut. Of course, I`m just a `dimwitted lib" in addition to being a woman; clearly Limbaugh`s genius is beyond my comprehension.

    Why the big fuss Feminazis?
The pill costs $15-50 bucks depending on where you live. That is not very expensive. Also, "Insurance" treats dysfunction and illness...your body is doing exactly what it`s designed to do so why should insurance pay for this?

However, the gov`ment has said insurance companies have to cover it. Doesn`t matter who owns the insurance company so Catholic Church, either pony up or get out of the insurance business. You have to obay the same business regulations as everyone else.

P.S. Rush Limpbone is a Prick.

Ill admit, I only got through 2 minutes of rush, and 5 minutes of Fluke`s testimony, but...
First, I`m in law school, and I think I signed up for the wrong one, cuz I`m not having as much sex as Rush infers from her testimony. Second, the point about birth control being correlative to the amount of sex has been addressed. Third, correct me if I`m wrong, but I think she is complaining that certain places of work and certain schools do not provided needed contraception. If that is right, I believe the harmed women have a choice of where they work or go to school, I know I do. I take Straterra for ADHD, and if my work ended up not provided for that drug, and my law school also refused, I would find a new job that did. Simple. Fixed. So, why don`t these women find a different job, or go to a different school instead of complaining. The institutions have rights too, and this woman is trying to infringe on those.

The good ol boys of the Republican party are causing women to leave the party in masses. This seriously is a slap in the face of women. Setting aside some of the health benefits that the pill provides certain women, insurance covers viagra. I guess insurance is good for the poll but not the hole. Women do not forget. A $1000 for sex a year ? What the hell ?

The pill Costs about $15-$30 each month, at most that`s $360 a year, not $1000. Sandra Fluke has got to be the biggest liar of the year so far.

As far as condoms go, guys should be the ones buying them and that`s mainly for STD control not birth control.

The only way I can see that it costs $1000 a year is if women were paying $2 a condom, 1 everyday of the year, for a total of $730. If that were the case then Rush is absolutely correct in his criticism of them having that much sex.

Either way, it`s not the government`s responsibility or insurance provider`s responsibility to pay for you to have sex, and I`d exclude viagra from being paid for as well.

@CrakrJak- There are different kinds of the Pill and each one has a different price. The pill I`m on costs $30 per month at the cheapest place I found online and I don`t think that was the brand I get now, some cheaper generic I`ve never heard of.

I buy my own condoms because I know men can`t be trusted to produce one and I can`t know if the one he does supply isn`t ten years old and unreliable.

BTW- I haven`t had sex for three years and still take the Pill for all the other things it does for my health. The Pill isn`t just for contraception. My best friend in high school took it for debilitating cramps. But, you`re a man and wouldn`t understand these things, like every other man trying to push this crap legislation through.

The pill costs $15-50 bucks depending on where you live. That is not very expensive. Also, "Insurance" treats dysfunction and illness...your body is doing exactly what it`s designed to do so why should insurance pay for this? "

Spoken like the typical clueless man. Is having cramps so bad you can`t walk normal? How about a flow so heavy you are afraid to leave the house because no pad or tampon can take care of it? How about acne so bad only a hormonal treatment will control it? How about painful cysts on ovaries that can be lessened? You men don`t know how lucky you have it.

    1. Contraception and family planning are public health issues. Society benefits when women are able to choose when they have children.

    2. For all of you saying that birth control pills are cheap, I hope you`re aware that pills are not the only form of birth control out there. There are patches, shots, vaginal rings, and IUDs as well, and they can cost a lot more. The pill is by far one of the most affordable, but it`s not an option for every woman, and if you don`t know why, you don`t understand this issue enough to debate about it.

A few years ago I was on a type of birth control that cost me $60 a month. I make enough money to afford that, but not every woman does.

I think some people on here are confusing the real price of the Pill with the copay their wife currently pays because their insurance COVERS IT. With my current insurance, I pay $10 copay for 3 months worth. If my insurance didn`t cover it, I would have to pay around $75 five times a year because I take more than the 28 per month. I pay premiums for my health insurance and most of the time this and a yearly exam is the only thing I use it for but politicians want to take that benefit away.

lauriloo: You act as if there aren`t other pills used to treat hormonal problems, besides the pill.

Your condescension was ill aimed, my mom was a nurse and had to have hormone replacement pills, nice try, but paying for the pill is not necessary for hormone therapy, it`s a choice to do so but not the only choice.

You guessed wrong that, "a man...wouldn`t understand these things..". Your claim of sexism is thoroughly debunked, nice try though.

Contraception: Be an adult and be responsible for your own choices. You can go with expensive contraception like implants, or you can get more affordable options like the pill. Cheeper still is the Condoms unless you are a total slut doing it with a differant guy every night, then that`s a bit expensive. Or you could choose to cross your legs and keep them that way.

Your body, your choice, YOUR RESPONSABILITY!

You could even choose to have a baby. THEN the gov`ment will give you money for lots of things.

"You can go with expensive contraception like implants, or you can get more affordable options like the pill."

As I stated before, if you don`t understand why the pill isn`t a viable option for every woman, you shouldn`t even be discussing this. The differences between forms of birth control are more than just price. Like all medications, hormonal contraceptives come with side effects. What works well for one woman can cause undesirable side effects in another.

Health care providers should not be able to deny certain services to certain people based on their idea of what is moral. It`s not a moral issue. It`s a health issue. Yet apparently many people think it`s perfectly acceptable to make decisions about public health based on a knee jerk emotional response instead of an informed opinion. I know the idea of women having consequence free sex lives terrifies some of you, but you`re not going to die. I promise.

Except that there has been no push from the usual right-wing blowhards to exclude Viagra. Also, insurance companies realize that it`s in their best interests to cover contraception. It`s a lot cheaper than the cost of giving birth. No ones being "paid to have sex". It`s common business sense.

But mandating the government or insurance to pay for your lifestyle choice is unreasonable

That all depends. If the government were able to save money from other health care costs such as delivering babies or services for pregnant women, also not to mention the possibility of women being able to finish school and not have to quit to look after a kid, and the costs can be offset (possibly, I admittedly don`t know what all your gov`t pays for). I realize that it`s a woman`s decision to have sex and whatnot, so it is reasonable to ask that she pay costs for birth control, but in a time where the planet`s population is rising too quickly, do we really need people procreating by mistake? Just sayin`.

Sometimes I despair of ever getting some Americans to recognize that using the word "liberal" as if it`s a dirty word is doing real harm to this country. (Non-Americans, if the "liberal = Satan" usage puzzles you, a lot of it is attributable to the blowhard in this link, Rush Limbaugh.)

What I`m recognizing now is that when someone on here uses the word "liberal" as a synonym for "evil," they`re probably listening to Rush and other extreme right-wing commentators for several hours a day. Reason and education simply cannot compete with that level of propaganda.

One: Birth control is more than just a contraceptive, it works as a preventative measure for ovarian cysts, uterine cancer, and a few other things if I remember correctly. Some women take it purely to manage their periods, whether because of a heavy flow or some other reason. I know a lady who has two a month instead of one, for whatever medical reason, and takes the pill to manage that.

So yes, it can be counted as preventative medicine.

More than that, though, I would rather give women free birth control than suffer the consequences of the "accidents" that arise when people are too lazy to use contraception. Broken homes in low income areas with single moms unable to provide for their children and lacking the drive or know-how to properly raise them. Which basically means a ton of extra delinquents in our society.

You`re missing the point. She never once mentioned the pills use for birth control. She is talking about the pill being used for medical conditions, and that the insurance that SHE pays for, that the school DOES NOT pay for, refuses to provide it on a medical need basis because the school arranged it, and is a Jesuit institution. She doesn`t want anyone to pay for it but her INSURANCE company. She`s not looking for a hand out from you or anyone else, just that her medical needs get covered for her ENTIRE body.

It`s not a matter of not taking personal responsibility. Women need birth control because they WANT to take personal responsibility. The issue here is that it`s not affordable or accessible for everyone. I`m not sure where the irresponsible part comes in.

Birth control here is $20 per fill (For a three month pack). That`s reduced to $5 if you have a health care card. For the average woman, lets say $100 for a GP visit to get a years script, then $80 per year to have it filled. $180 per year is not a huge cost really. If like me you are full time at uni and only work part time, and have access to a low cost clinic (hurrah city life) thats probably more like less then 40 bucks a year.

(This is in Aus though, so may not be relevant to overseas)

That said though, this is a bigger issue then `it`s not that expensive`. Provide low cost birth control and more people who should be on the pill but are not (low income, low SES and even homeless women who cannot afford kids) may jump on the bandwagon, helping them and the community at large by reducing the number of kids that end up in foster homes or state care and have to be supported by the system (and are likely to repeat the cycle as adults)

Not to mention the social justice aspect of it. I`m on a variety of the pill for severe bleeding and cramps that can make an already bad health thing of mine worse. I bet their are a lot of girls like me who use it primarily for that reason, and secondarily for the birth control aspect. Any other medication that reduced those symptoms would probably be subsidised, no? Is where I am anyway. This one just happens to also be birth control.

"Even if you`re on the pill you should be using condoms for STD`s so it`s kind of a redundancy isn`t it?"

Condoms alone are about 80-90% effective in preventing pregnancy I believe (varies between studies and how accurate people are in applying/using them right)

Condoms used in conjunction with the pill is something like 99% PLUS effective.

So it`s not really redundant, more of a `fail safe` if (and when) the condom does fail. You hear of plenty of those breaking, after all!

I think that this issue highlights the problem with Obamacare in general. Companies are now forced to provide healthcare options to their employees, and people will be required to hold health insurance, or pay a $700 fee every year. With everyone on healthcare, now healthcare has become essentially a nationalized service, like utilities. The government will now be setting the terms of how the businesses can operate.

Now maybe I`m wrong and it will work out great for everyone, but to me this seems like a gateway to telling people how to live their lives. In the past, an insurance company would just not offer coverage if you were severely obese, a smoker and an alcoholic.

As a result of your choices, in the past you were denied expensive treatment and you died, but it was as a result of your choices. You were free to live your life as you saw fit. Soon it could get to the point where the government has to regulate unhealthy food, alcohol, etc. They may set minimum exercise requirements in the future at a federally registered gym where they log your physical activity to keep your approval for insurance.

And if you think it will just be the bleeding hearts pushing this, you`re wrong. It will be the bean-counters and the lobbyists, because they will be able to save money.

There are few things the government does in a more efficient or ethical manner than the free market (free market as a whole, not individual businesses).

Now I hope I`m wrong, but over the next 20 years, I could see this happening.

I agree to an extent, but even the pill is not 100% effective so accidents do happen. If a woman decides to keep a kid, hey, her body her choice, so she does take on the responsibility. But the guy does have a certain responsibility to that kid still. He knew that even with every protection available bar vasectomy or similar their was a chance this could happen, and he chose to take that chance, so he gets to take some responsibility for the outcome too. In most cases, unfortunately for him, that is a huge financial thing.

(The amounts some men are expected to pay are unreasonable TBQH)

But, I do think men should be able to demand paternity tests. So many men paying money for kids who are not their own because someone put their names on the bir

Cigarettes will be the logical first step to be outlawed. Then depending on who`s got the bigger lobby, alcohol might be next as a leading cause of many health problems. Sodium content might be next on the chopping block, along with trans-fat content. And as a lot of studies have shown, a heavy meat diet isn`t conducive to healthy living, so they`ll set limits on how much meat you can buy.

With the internet, all of this regulation will be easier than ever, because these will all be reasons to start classifying purchases, a computer will be monitoring what you buy, and when you`re at Walmart, the cashier will have to say, "I`m sorry sir, the computer says that you`ve exceeded your sodium content for this month for your family of four, what do you want me to put back?"

Now it probably won`t get to this point, but believe me, there are people out there who think this would be a much better society.

Bit of a stretch, nationalised healthcare actually works pretty well for the system as a whole, even with all the smokers and obese, and otherwise `risky` people for health issues in the system. I won`t get into how it benefits everyone by treating people and keeping them in the workforce (and paying tax and offsetting healthcare costs) and so on, but it works pretty well. And, it`s a pretty huge jump from "Healthcare for all" to "Control ALL the lives!"

Interesting that you guys have nationalised utilities though. Ours (excluding one large telephone/internet/mobile provider that is gov owned and water companies that are regional but work together and with the gov) are private, but we still have a huge monopoly on electricity and gas happening (amongst other things)

I don`t mind Rush. I think he likes to say outrageous stuffs to get a rise outta people for money. The annoying part is that ignorant conservative listeners follow his rhetoric like he`s Jesus.

I don`t think the dude knows how birth control works... Even if she only has sex an average of one day every 3 months, she still has to take her birth control everyday.
And since she is having to pay out of pocket, the cost would be around $30-$75 per month. So the $1000 dollars a year seems about $100-300 too high, so she might be factoring in the required semi-annual check ups.

Honestly this seems to silly to even have to spell out.

At no time did Rush say "Contraception is equivalent to prostitution.", or anything similar.

He said, "Having someone else pay for your contraception is equivalent to prostitution."
But you guys didnt actually listen to Rush, did you?
You guys automatically assume that the caption is correct instead of thinking for yourselves. Keep drinking that liberal kool-aid, it must be tasty.

Oh yeah that makes a world of difference to a moron... Rush will publicly apologize in the coming days just like he did over the Donovan McNabb racist comment. He`s not setting the airwaves on fire. He needs to say stupid stuff so people know he`s still alive.
Why isn`t he in jail anyway? That shopping bag full of oxy would have been enough to send anyone of us to the clink for a very long time.

Why would your birth control pill usage go up if you have more sex? You take one pill a day whether you`re getting laid once a month or twice a day.

@almightybob, exactly. Depending on what you take, contraceptives can be expensive, even with insurance. If I was in law school (I`m not and don`t wish to be), I wouldn`t be able to afford the $10 a month for my pill.

Bit of a stretch, nationalised healthcare actually works pretty well for the system as a whole

Wait-rubbers don`t cost that much! what`s the problem? I also think Planned Parenthood supplies this either cheap or free.
Girl, either keep your legs shut, or deal with the sex you`re having. I`m not a huge Rush fan, but I agree with him here-somehow women and men have had sex with contraception for many, many years and never need MY tax dollars to pay for them. Rush`s point is that, if we are paying for her to have sex, isn`t she then a prostitute? Let her pay for her own sex or keep her legs shut-it ain`t rocket surgery!

What most people here do not realize is that Rush Limbaugh "demonstrates absurdity by being absurd" and that`s from his own books.

Rush isn`t a journalist and doesn`t claim to be, he`s an entertainer, not unlike Jon Stewart.

Once again, you don`t know what you`re talking about.

As of this writing Rush Limbaugh has lost 4 of his long time advertisers. Sleep Number & Sleep Train mattresses, Legal Zoom and Quicken Loans. He`s in a world of poop over this and I think this will be the end of his syndicated show. Goodnight Rush!

Once again, @madest, you blow hard but there`s no substance in what you say.

    When Obamacare was passed:
    >Obama welcomed and accepted Republican ideas
    >Obama released the Bill 2 weeks ahead of the vote, just like he promised, so everyone in America could read it.
    >The Democrats didn`t have majorities in either the House OR Senate

OR: reality: non of the above.

If it`s just her business, it`s just her responsibility to pay for it.

jamie76-"I`m trying to figure out why it is okay for him to call women sluts and hoes"

I`m trying to figure out the feigned outrage over Limbaush calling her a slut while there was none when Ed Schultz called a woman a slut, or when David Letterman called a woman a slut. I don`t recall Obama running out to call Palin (oh, that`s right, it`s `OK` to call a conservative woman a slut).

Frankii-"We get them free in Britain"

No, you don`t. It`s just that YOU don`t pay for it, someone else has to pay for it.

madduck-"in the UK- so contraception is free"

No, it`s not. It costs to produce, transport and distribute. It`s just that YOU`RE forcing OTHERS to pay for it.

@Squrlz4Sale: It`s not that the words "liberal" & "evil are synonymous, it`s that those that go by the label `liberal` are, for the most part, idealists with no basis in reality or idiots (but then, I repeat myself).

@zombunny: sorry, birth control IS affordable to everyone.

FoolsPrussia-"the greatest nation on earth is still arguing about birth control."

Not arguing over access of birth control, just who`s responsible for paying for it. Basically the argument is between `Personal Responsibility` and `What? ME Responsible? Hells No!`.
