Obama Knows Sign Language? Yep, No Problem

Submitted by: Student_Law 4 years ago

Oh, yes he can! The game is on for sure. Can the Republicans really make this election interesting?

LillianDulci pointed out something easily overlooked by people focussing only on that one gesture:
It seems like he understood what was being signed to him, considering "thank you" wouldn`t have been appropriate in every situation.
So it`s about as impressive as him having learned Japanese well enough to understand it spoken to him at a normal pace.

Or it`s a set piece to buy votes and he can act well enough to make it look like he`s at least somewhat familiar with the language.
It should be assumed that he should act naturally around them, they are people too, this shouldn`t come across as amazing...
Are you playing the victim card seriously or just trolling? I can`t tell.

Just in case you`re serious, or anyone else plays their victim cards off of your post:

One person used the word `natural` to refer to Obama`s use of sign language. NOT, and I`m directed this to all those desperately looking for a chance to play their victims cards to gain power, NOT his behaviour towards deaf people.

In any case, ignoring any use of the word `natural` is a very good rule of thumb because it is almost always a false appeal to authority.

In one sense, no complex language is natural - they are all artificial things, invented by people. In another, everything invented by people is natural because inventiveness is natural. `natural` almost always means `something I want to claim superhuman support for`.

That`s about as impressive as knowing "domo-arigato Mr. Roboto." How lame is North American society that we are totally effing impressed when someone in power just recognizes the existence of a group of people or person who is "different" in some way? It should be assumed that he should act naturally around them, they are people too, this shouldn`t come across as amazing...

That was the lamest thing I have ever seen. Even I know thank you in sign language and that`s only from playing one round of disc golf with some deaf guys. Picking up one word is nothing.

I saw this a few days ago. I just loved it. Sure Obama just did one sign but it was so natural. Screw you haters. This was a good thing. He made that kids year.

LOL, a politician that can say "thank you" in sign language. He must be genuine. Let`s drink the flavor-aid.

I`m Canadian, so it doesn`t matter what I think, but I`ll say it anyway. Faced with the choice between Obama and Romney, Santorum or Gingrich, surely voters will to see to it that Obama sweeps the floor with the Republican candidate`s hair. I have faith in you, America.

Hmm...I don`t know. That looked smooth enough to be genuine speech, not just a rehearsed exchange. Although he must be a competent actor to be a successful politician.

I can say "thank you" in 3 languages, but I only know one language. If I was coached beforehand, I could say "thank you" in any number of languages.

This shows nothing.

@CrakrJak, I knew the sign for `Thank You` in 3rd grade too, but I forgot it by grade four

It seems like he understood what was being signed to him, considering "thank you" wouldn`t have been appropriate in every situation. So just because he only made a simple sign is irrelevant...

@pigsnout It`s true, I worked with deaf people, sign language is tough! idk how they do it.
BUT one word does not equal "knows the language" eh? This could easily have been a plant since every aspect of Obama`s "meeting the public" is strictly regulated & controlled after Joe The Plumber, right?
